Hammer, there's one self-confessed Moldova expert here. If it's a laptop though I can see no problem why they'd even make a remark on it, unless it's gift-wrapped with her name on :))
Thank you Thunder - can't quite claim to be an expert yet - but I sure enjoy learning - and especially being there with my lady.
I've never actually taken a laptop through myself but I don't see any problem. Make it obvious that it is yours - and not brand new merchandise in a box and you should pass right through. I've taken through video cameras, digital cameras, 35 mm cameras, CD players, and numerous other devices with never a problem.
I donj't take a laptop because the hotel I stay at doesn't have internet access available for customers. I go to an internet cafe on a regualr basis.
The rules, it seems, are set on an individual basis. I have been to Moldova twice - each time briinging more than my alotment of cameras - and I have never been charged.
On the other hand - my lady, on leaving, was seen wearing several pieces of gold. Moldovan officalls told her that she was only entitled to take five personal gold items OUT of Moldova or she would have to pay. Neither of us had ever HEARD of such a rule and we both believe it was made up on the spot - as most rules of this type tend to be in Moldova.
Looking over this thread - I thought I should mention something that is important and has benn mentioned in much older threads - but isn't mentioned here.
If you bring new items into Moldova (or other FSU countries) its a good idea to take them out of whatever packaging they may be in. New packaging od nearly ANYTHING is likely to draw the attention of officials.
So - while the originator of this thread might be perfectly safe in bringing in his personal notebook (computer) - a brand one, still in the box, might just draw one of those spontaneous charges I refer to above.
Cetainly new JEWELRY in the box draws all sorts of extra attention.
The Hotel Dedeman Near Sun City has free WIFI. I was not a hotel guest
just asked at front desk if it was ok.
I sat in restaurant and plugged in and went to town.
I also carried in 2 laptops with no issues.
