i have met some friends over in ukraine and i have their phone numbers. I have callled them whilst i was in ukraine and yes their numbers worked.
HOWever when i try to call them from Australia to Ukraine, there seem to be a problem.
My friends are from nikolaev, and the response i get from the phoneis " the numer your are calling is disconnected" or " ring ring ring ring ring " but no one answers.
WE have emailed each other and are at a lost as to how to call each other. he and she are saying that they are not getting any missed calls at all....
There are some friends who are receiving my calls and we do connect but there are some that just ring out.. or i get the number you have called is disconnected.
any help?
should i just skype ?
i also found that their ATM would also regularly not accept my VIsa card transactions as well .. their internet is unreliable..
any help would be appreciated.
I use my Visa Card every few days here, without problems. Sometimes the machines are without money, so the card gets spat back at me, as any where else. The Visa Card will not work in the non Visa ATM's that are part of the Private Bank Company I think.
Many people on this Forum have called people in Ukraine from their native country such as UK, US, etc, including myself, and I do call London from my mobile on my Ukraine number (Life) every week, so not sure why you're unable to call from Australia. A silly question, but are you inputting all the correct codes ? You know that Ukraine changed it's dialing codes in October, maybe this is the culprit ? ! I also have Skype, if you can use that instead, it'll not be expensive or any real hardship !
The city code (land line) is different from the mobile phone code and they have started adopting a new dialing regime last October... my suggestion to you is to get them to either call you (you don't have to answer)or sms you... then you will have their correct number to dial.
When you call them from inside Ukraine you dial +380XXX try to dial 0080XXX when you are outside.
If you are calling to the city phone in Nikolaev dial 0080512 + the number
What phone operator your friends have?
I'm from Ukraine and I think that difference between operators have a sense in this situation.
For example, with new dialing regime a call to my friends as earlier, but my friends with other operators can't it.
Armin,
To call inside Ukraine you dial 8 + phone number, including code. For example:
8-979-777-555
When you call from another country you dial +380-979-777-555, where the initial + indicates the local code for international calls (00 or 011 or 810).
The problem nitrous is having from Australia is more likely related to calling Mobile phones in Ukraine. Some times it takes me one hour of dialing to get through, depending on the time of day (in Ukraine). If you call very late at night or very early in the morning it is easier to get through.
What FSULover wrote about calling into mobile phones: My call completion rate to Ukraine is very poor ... something like 1 in 10. I'm not sure, but it seems that the worst is calling to mobile phones in the popular Kyivstar system. And it is better, if you call "off hours."
I suppose that there are not enough international circuits coming into Ukraine to carry the traffic volume.
im telling of about 20 calls that i have made, maybe 1 connect. and when it does connect GUESS WHAt it cuts off and dies !!! i dont know what it is with their system it just doesnt connect, and my friends in ukraine are saying " i have no missed calls" and here i am saying ive tried calling 20 times !!! i almost gave up her thinking she doenst want to answer her phone... i keeps saying " the number you have called is disconnected "
i think she is with life, but im not sure, i get a message like" if you are with life press X to leave a message " if you are not with life please call number XXXXXXXX
she has an iphone
and the number is something like
+380 93 XXX XXXX.
I call my fiancee's mobile phone daily (sometimes twice a day) from the USA and have for over six months now, I use Skype and I have had only minimal problems connecting. I guess somewhere in the neighborhood of 5 to 6 times in the hundreds of times I have called her that I have had any difficulty connecting. She is on the MTS network. Most times (almost always)the connection is excellent and clarity is amazing. I use headphones which help a lot.
It could be the phone card service you are using. I used to use Yahoo phone out and experienced similar problems as well as yahoo charged all of my prepaid minutes up while I was hearing a ring into some system other than the phone I was calling.
I started using a card called Vagodnaya I purchased on line at http://www.callingsuperstore.com/seattle/cardinfo/33/
and my calls went through almost every time.
I do not know if this card has an access number from Austrailia or not. Do not allow more than 20 to 30 seconds after the first ring if there is no answer and it will not charge you. There is about a 50 cents a week surcharge if you do not use the whole card in the first week and it tells me I have 139 minutes to start with but do not expect more than 100 real time.
I think the Fsu phone services do this on purpose (do not allow foreign card companies to access their networks or charge with little or no service), but this russian card seems to work with them.
That's definitely "life". But I receive calls from abroad almost every day and sometimes that works better then others. Try skype! And then ask your mobile operator how to call them
I use vodafone and get through every time and also Skype i have no problems with. Some of the big companies are starting to do international packages. Ukraine will eventualy upgrade its mobile network and i would not be surprised to see one of the big players like Vodafone buying into the networks over there. Interesting though that all ukraine cell phones there have to be paired with a ukraine sim. I got my GF an unlocked phone here and gave it to her, it worked ok for a month then the new rule came in and her sim got locked out from that phone. I am going to take my phone with me next time i visit and see if it works ok, until the new rule came in my phone worked ok there.
BTW, "Life" has a good option, for foreigners who wish to call to +38063 and +38093 and here it is http://life.com.ua/index.php?area=mylife&lng=en&page=3-500
But somehow their stupid system do not accept non-ukrainian visas and mastercards. I left them this message but I don't think they'll make changes soon.
Anyway that's cheaper then skype and if you need help with payments to them then I'll help you. just send me a PM
