The Department of State warns U.S. citizens to defer all non-essential travel to Ukraine during the transition period following the departure of the President from Kyiv on February 22 and while a new government is formed. U.S. citizens in Ukraine, and those considering travel to Ukraine, should evaluate their personal security situation in light of political instability and the possibility of violence, particularly in Kyiv and areas of eastern and southern Ukraine. This replaces the Travel Warning for Ukraine dated February 20, 2014. On February 20, 2014, the Department of State authorized the departure of family members of U.S. government personnel from Ukraine. While the U.S. Embassy in Kyiv’s Consular Section is open for public services, the Embassy’s ability to respond to emergencies involving U.S. citizens throughout Ukraine is limited.
The Department of State urges U.S. citizens who travel to Ukraine to carefully evaluate the risks posed to their personal safety, particularly in the capital city of Kyiv and areas in the east and south of Ukraine. While the transition has been largely peaceful, there is still a potential for violence between supporters of different political parties, particularly in eastern Ukraine.
For anyone who must go to Kiev,, they might want to have the girl pick him up at the airport with a trusted taxi, and go to a little town west of Kiev.
The demonstrations took place between 2 McDonalds' until the bullets began to fly. Then Parliament took action. Now that there is world attention, maybe Ukraine can do business within it's borders and conduct trade with all entities, as opposed to "Either/Or". Ukraine's future is in Kiev, not foreign capitals. For all the investment and time to end the Soviet Union. The West, is morally and has an economic responsibility to invest as it has not for 22 years and 4 Presidential administrations. It is in all parties interest that investment made in the west this comes to be. East Germany is now prosperous because of the same investment the West . The made after WWII. Japan was rebuilt under General Macarthur and the Philippines was left to "turn slowly in the wind" in the same manner . But Hell, we have the same going on here in the States, but I digress..................
What are you talking about, do you have the slightest understanding of the problems that would be caused by Russian Crimeans trying to split from Ukraine and add Crimea to Russia? War is one fo them.
I agree that the west should take some of the financial responsibility from Ukraine. However, as in the 22 years and 4 presidential administrations, Ukraine was given a $15.1 billion loan in 2010 from the IMF. http://goo.gl/R0HlUI
Almost all of the funding of the IMF comes from western nations. http://goo.gl/CHZXeW

“In Ukraine's strategic Crimea region, fistfights broke out between pro- and anti-Russian demonstrators. About 20,000 Muslim Tatars who rallied in support of the interim government clashed with a smaller pro-Russian rally in the regional capital, Simferopol.
One health official said at least 20 people were injured, while the local health ministry said one person died from an apparent heart attack.
The protesters shouted and attacked each other with stones, bottles and punches, as police and leaders of both rallies struggled to keep the two groups apart.
They started to disperse after the speaker of the regional legislature announced it would postpone a crisis session, which many Tatars feared would have taken steps toward seceding from Ukraine.
"The threat of separatism has been eliminated," Refat Chubarov, the leader of the Tatar community in Crimea, told the crowd.”
“Crimean Tatars are a Turkic Muslim ethnic group who have lived in Crimea for centuries. They were brutally deported in 1944 by Soviet dictator Josef Stalin, but returned after Ukraine's independence.”
I question whether that last statement is true,,,, didn’t the Tatars come from further east,, closer to Mongolia???
They were removed from western Soviet Union and the oil rich areas to the south because of possible insurgency as many of the Tartars as well as other groups were aligned with the Nazis. Yes, then and today it is always about the oil and distribution of it. Welcome to reality for those that cannot understand.
I was surprised to read that they "have lived in Crimea for centuries." I wrongly supposed that they had come from Tatarstan (a region east of Moscow, but well in the European part of Russia -- and separated from Mongolia by the vast width of Kazakhstan) in modern times.
However, the Tatar presence in Crimea dates back to the 1700s.
Stalin deported the entirety of several ethnic populations during the war, causing them terrible suffering and loss -- the Crimean Tatars were one of these groups. They have not forgotten how terrible it was, to be under the heel of the Russian boot.
Durak,,, I looked for “Tatarstan” in the atlas,,, I’ve had two of them within reach while I watch TV,,, and only found Turkmenistan and Tajikistan, and both are well within Asia. The only “stan” within Europe is a little tip of Kazakhstan,,, the border between Europe and Asia runs down the Ural Mountains to Orsk, then to Orel and down the middle of the Caspian sea to Baku, then heads west to Istanbul Turkey.
Is Tatarstan a name from the past??
I’m starting to think Ukraine should give up Crimea to reduce the risk of invasion by Russia. The navy base is the tactical interest of Russia. But that would leave all of the Tartars to fend for themselves again. Just maybe,,,, the protesters would have the voting power if they included the Tartars.
Probably, Tatarstan is not in your atlases, because it is a region rather than a country.
The divisions of Russia are a little complicated ... think of the USA, which has states, territories (like Puerto Rico and Guam), and the District of Columbia which is a unique status.
Russia has six different kinds of territorial division (called federal subjects). One kind is a Republic, as in the Republic of Tatarstan.
In your atlas, look for Kazan (just about due east from Moscow). This is the capital of Tatarstan, though it's in the northwest corner of the Republic. Naberezhnie Chelny is nearer the eastern end, though still about 20% of the territory is east of Chelny. If you can find Leninogorsk (south from Chelny), that is near the southern border.
In the Soviet days, Tatarstan was simply part of the gigantic Russian Soviet Socialist Republic.
The spelling "Tartar" is from the old days when Europeans were fond of mispronouncing foreign names. I only apply it to rb's sauce :)
On my very first trip, I met two young fellows from Chelny -- their names were Damir and Irek, which are absolutely not names from Russian culture or language. But I think they are both classic Tatar names. Though the majority of people in Tatarstan are ethnic Tatars, almost 40% of the population is ethnically Russian.
amarica stirs up this trouble so they can get rockets closer to Russia
shame shame .

im possibly wrong but I believe crimea was given to Ukraine by some idiot running Russia .
