Back in Dec of 1998 when I attended a socials tour in Moscow, it was mandatory to take the KGB museum tour within the walls of the Kremlin, and one tour of the city. The city tour drove past an old church that was being renovated, a large arena where an Olympics was held some time in the past, a place that made vodka,,,, and it drove thru the “rich” part of town,,, mostly large apartment buildings where the wealthy lived.
About a year later,,,, I’m driving thru the southeast side of Milwaukee or Chicago with my Russian wife, when she points to some large buildings and asks me what they are? I told her: Those are the “Projects” or “PJ’s”,,,,, a place that houses mostly minorities, and other poor people that are on welfare, or assisted living. When I looked at her,,,, she had a real sad look on her face,,, and I then realized that I probably insulted her?!
To the common, honest, hard working Russian/FSU people,,, an apartment building in the city might be all they can hope or aspire for! In America,,, it’s where we store our poorest people.
If there is anything good that can be said about communism,,, it is that,,, it’s efficient! It is cheaper and easier to maintain an apartment building with 100 units, than it is to maintain 100 private homes!
I drove my wife around one of the nearby cities,,, and asked her to guess how many people would be in a city this large?? She said 100,000 to 200,000 people! She was astonished to learn that only 9,500 people lived there!! A city full of houses/homes,,, not ten story flats!
I guess the idea of retiring to the countryside is foreign to them? The area where I live is under constant pressure from developers,,, we are asked quite often if we want to sell a piece of it. (NO)
While on my way from Odesa to Herson, the taxi driver showed me a photo of a moose he shot up near Murmansk. I then did a moose call inside the taxi,,,, after making sure he held the steering wheel with both hands. I then started up my old computer and showed him some hunting photos and photos of home. Most of my travel pics are taking from inside the car,,, and he saw the road many times,,,,,,, “Ahhhhh,,,,, nice roads!!!!” He then saw a photo of my farm. Ahhhh,,, I want that!!! The next time he drove for me,,, he brought his drop dead gorgeous daughter along!! I never found out how old his daughter was,,,, just that he was several years younger than I!!
This driver was Russian and former military, from a larger eastern city,,, they moved to Ukraine for more opportunities.
All that the people of Ukraine want,,, is the same opportunities that people in Western Europe have. The chance of a decent lifestyle and living. And a handful of people stand in the way of it for how many millions of people across the FSU??!!
Yeah,, we had to go on this tour, plus the one through the city. Besides the KGB museum, they had a museum of the royal carriages, antique armor, a few crowns, plus other stuff that didn’t remain in my memory.
You had to buy a permit in order to take photos inside,,, but once inside,, most things were behind protective glass, and you weren’t allowed to take photos of a few things. Once through the museum, they had racks full of post cards for everyone to buy
A few of us had dates along for the tours,,, and they could not understand why anyone would want to visit the KGB museum. In a way,, today’s Russia, is years behind 1998.
I also remember a huge cannon that was never fired,,, but remains pointed towards France. The cannon balls are the size of basketballs.
.It is you that are calling names. It was not I or my brethren that invaded a country, destroyed it's ability to defend itself from within and absconded with the treasury. I did not take up arms against it when a righteous election was being coordinated in a reasonable time. Nor did I see that man return to be reaffirmed. Neither is any external power dictated a policy of all or nothing with the threat of military action other than your heroic figure. Who is behaving as a Nazi?
Though it was you I wrote about, it is still hard for me to think you truly believe what you have written. However you may be that dumbass indeed or suffer from Stockholm Syndrome. Possibly you are like a weak woman that blindly accepts the political views of the man she is bedding.... I am wasting my time
Crimea will have billions spent there and in 10 years the place will be way better then under corrupt ukraine nazi government.

Program: American Experience
Episode: The Great Famine
The little-known story of the American effort to relieve starvation in the new Soviet Russia in 1921, The Great Famine is a documentary about the worst natural disaster in Europe since the Black Plague in the Middle Ages. Half a world away, Americans responded with a massive two-year relief campaign, championed by Herbert Hoover, director of the American Relief Administration known as the ARA.

The failed Socialist experiment of 1930 to 1933 in which the Russians confiscated all of the grain harvest from Ukraine farmers left 4 million Ukranians dead. Most starved to death a few were even forced into caniballism. That is the reality of state run Socialism. Maybe Michael Moore could learn something from this as he is a big fan of Socialism.
Look, Danny. Putin wants to be friends with the US. I know it is American press, but think. After trashing Americans, why would he do that? The sanctions are working. Recession is hitting Russia. http://goo.gl/aC3BoM
