Having corresponded with a Filipina many years ago, she spoke passable English, but not UK English. Perhaps since the country broke away from the US influence since the Spanish American war period, the language is not that spoken there much anymore? Probably also places like HK and India would also see a drop in the use of English in the schools there. I guess my thoughts may have focused too much during the colonial period of history for those areas.
I read Elena of Elena's Model's book before I went to Ukraine the first time. She said to learn 10 Russian words, I believe. Russian is difficult, so I kept forgetting. I learned 25 words, so I would remember the 10 when I got to Ukraine. What I remembered actually was 5 or less.
I got nine hours of "Learn Russian in Your Car" CD in preparation for the second trip. Listening and repeating Russian for months in my car, I learned maybe 30-35 words. Subsequent ladies I visited were impressed and asked me how I knew Russian.
I have no problem with interpreters if they are needed, even if they are high priced. The interpreter sets her price. If the customer pays it, that is business. As for me, I would not need it. There are computers and I know Russian enough to get by without one.
To connect with people, a little English is better than no English, so as little Russian is better than no Russian. ... The language of love is universal.
To close a business transaction with a ironclad contract, hire a translator.
Dealing with people, especially the opposite sex, Can And Would Give you " a headache".
"Bearing in mind that the people of Hong Kong HATE China"
The hate is directed at the political party in power, not the country or people. Since the location is designated as SAR, I would think that at some future time, English would become less spoken. The Nationalists in Taiwan considered an invasion of the mainland at the height of the Cultural Revolution since they thought the mainland people would be receptive to a regime change given the mass starvation going on. The US would not back up the plan given that the Russians may or may not interfere as well as the fact that they were already bogged down in Vietnam.
I got my historic events mixed up. What I meant to refer to is the "Great Leap Forward" in China in the last 1950s. That event resulted in massive starvation and death. The Cultural Revolution occurred in the late 1960s. There was a Sino-Soviet split about 1960 and with the push to industrialize in China, the Nationalists thought that it was a good time to invade the mainland given the upheaval going on there. The US was not involved in Vietnam during that time, but had just fought in the Korean War. With along with the Cuban revolution in 1959, the Soviets reaction to an invasion would be unpredictable.
f you limit your search to only English speakers then you are losing out on the best girls and that
is a 100% FACT. It still amazes me that you guys come here expecting that you will find English speaking girls in a country in which its not the common language and never bothering to learn her language.
I think you deserve what you get. Those who speak English know that they can snag a foreigner and use him to thier advantage. You are coming to a foreign country. Did it ever fu*&ing occur to you that perhaps you should make an effort to learn her language??? If thats too difficult for you then perhaps a blood sucking American girl is what you really deserve.
Rock I wish you would have told me this before I married an English speaking ukrainian woman! I wish all you guys would have told me I was doing it all wrong before I got married and you guys just came home to rape your fists.
My wife spoke perfectly understandable english when I meet her as does all her friends who are currently on fiance. Com. The fact is the day a woman decides she is serious about going to another country she stays taking english lessons.
Tom. First of all I am very happy for you and your marriage. Also great that you know other English speakers in Ukraine!!!
I will never bash you or say something bad about this!
Lets, however, look at the facts about Ukraine. Its a country of 45 million people.
Of those 45 million people, at least 5 million+ of them are single females and of marrying age.
Of this 5 million I will bet dollars to donuts that at best, 10% know English good enough for conversation with foreigner.
thats 500,000 girls and more than half of them likely already have a boyfriend or are out of your age range....
The point is that my earlier statement is simply a basic mathematical fact. If you limit yourself to only English speakers then you are missing out on hundreds of
thousands of potential matches. There are more good girls that would make a good wife than you can possibly imagine and most may know 10 English words maximum.
If I ended the relationship with either girl tomorrow(neither know any real amount of English)I could find another quite easily because they are everywhere!
whether with an agency or without, your prospects are overwhelmingly increased if you search beyond those who can speak and understand English.
Im not disparaging anyone who wants to go the English only route. Im simply saying the possibilities are endless if you are willing to step outside the restrictive boundaries
of language. Why limit yourself when the perfect girl may be just a small but easily overcome barrier of language????
Attraction and love is not restricted by such small obstacles. Additionally, why is it so horrible for you to make an attempt to learn her language???
remember yet again, you are coming to a country in which English is NOT the first language. Dont let American arrogance blind you to that simple fact.
Sometimes I think people with such an attitude deserves an English speaking blood sucking American girl! I honestly mean no offense, Im just stating reality
We also need to search for someone that fits our life style! For good or bad,,, most people learn a 2nd language to improve their lifestyle. I live in the country and live a country life,,, a woman that went to college and learned English and her profession may not be a good choice for me. Perhaps a nurse or teacher would work out,,, but not a doctor or lawyer. My being happy with the woman isn’t good enough,, she needs to be happy with me and where I live too.
I have come across several profiles who are doctors. Since I majored in the natural sciences in college, I would actually have something in common with someone with a medical background. I have been to medical facilities and seen how they operate. My advice to the general public....do not get sick. But, I have reservations with a career lady who is a doctor. She probably would be more "useful" remaining in her country and might find suitable work hard to find in this country, especially with limited language skills and no certification. Of course, all of the profiles say that a family is paramount over career, but if you transition from a professional to getting pregnant and raising children, that is a major transition.
Dc,,,, to me, it’s a waste of her talent. A doctor or lawyer would need to travel 20 miles each way to a mediocre hospital or a limited client base for lawyers.
A few years ago, I had to make an unexpected appointment with my doctor. I was having muscle craps and spasms in the arms and legs during and after heavy physical work. That day, my doctor had med students making the rounds with him,,, he stated my symptoms and asked the students for the diagnosis? Who do you think got the answer first?? ME! It was dehydration caused by something else.
Lonelyranger,
For many professions, the workers there "do not have a clue". When you get a prescription for some ailment, it is all an educated guess. You could have a reaction to the drug and keel over. There was a cancer doctor reported to have prescribed high cost treatments that were unnecessary for his patients and he bilked Medicare for millions of dollars. Sometimes, they get it right, sometimes they get it wrong. You hope that you are not the victim of one who got it wrong.
I was waiting for a prescription to be filled,,, and I over heard a customer asking for a Fioricet type headache medicine,,, which contains acetaminophen, butalbital, and caffeine,,, but without the caffeine! They didn’t know if there was such a thing? I said it’s called PHRENILIN- butalbital and acetaminophen tablet, you need to order it through your Canadian sources. It took them a few minutes to find it,,,, and they had a rather stunned look on their faces.
LR1701, ABSOLUTELY!!! Even before the relationship gets to a more advanced stage its critical to
know if you will be compatible in your country and with your lifestyle. Will she be happy in a rural or urban environment, etc.
Being and living together in Ukraine and the lifestyle involved is often and usually very very much
different than in the USA. Having an understanding about these differences and what to expect in
your country is very important. Ive found out the hard way years ago that having a good relationship and compatible lifestyle together in Ukraine is different than USA. She didn't like US lifestyle or the hoops she would have to jump through in order to be a doctor in US. Didnt like the attitudes of some she met and I realized that I had not done enough to prepare her for the transition which was more a shock than we expected.
We all hopefully learn from our mistakes and it improves the chance for success next time.
about the language thing. Even if your girl speaks good English please don't forget that it's not her native language. My boyfriend and I had some issues with that, sometimes he forgets that English is not my language and some words i can interpret wrong.
