no, I have actually got a miles4more lufthansa card with 9000 miles on it actually!
Anyway, I WAS talking about internal travel on the train. Yes there are a lot of trains in the Ukraine and there train system is very good. But, it is painstakingly slow to get anywhere for some reason the trains travel very slowly. I watched some trains going past at the station and it looked like a scene out of trumpton. The tickets are very cheap. rom Uzghorod to Vinnista was approximately £15. That's cheap in my book.
did you have trouble reading signs at train stations? Is there anything in English? I have read many threads
positive and negative about train travel in Ukraine. I guess its best for getting to the smaller towns
Kingarthur:
Whoa, my Italian correspondent! I meant no disrespect to Italians. I have been to Italy several times as a tourist, partly because they seem to be genuinely fond of Americans! :) I compare Venice to other cities in Italy, and the feeling there is much more opportunistic and into the business of making the most money from tourists. It is no different than any other big tourist city in any other country. Venice is no better and no worse in that respect. But hey, it's just an observation, and if you know better than me, then I defer to you. No big deal to me...
As for Ukrainefare.com, they charge extra for mailing and delivery, on top of their higher price for the ticket itself. Why is it so hard for people to believe that a business charges extra for the convenience of advance booking over the internet from outside the Ukraine?
Boredfukka: My point was that Aerosvit charges higher prices on the internet than they do if you purchase the ticket at the Ukraine airport, which are dirt cheap really. It's okay if people don't believe it. Just trying to help...
As I mentioned, I am planning a trip to Ukraine. I would like to visit ladies in two or three cities. Sumy is possibly one of these cities. "Sumy Airport" exixts as an entry on Wikipidia. Airport type is reported as "public". Data such as coordinates, runways length and so on, are also reported. No airport in Sumy seems to exist at all, according to ukrainefare.com and other websites I've been surfing. Anyone can help with this puzzle?
I think you mean dirt cheap from the ukraine and travelling within the ukraine from one airport to another. Not the same as buying a ticket from a western country and travelling into the ukraine. They are a business and so prices will be higher coz people can afford to pay more. They are still cheaper than lufthansa from birmingham.
Arthur,
Such cities as Nikolaev and indeed Sumy, many others also, have 'airfields', probably ex military, that they like to refer to as airports but there is no point in commercial flights operating to these airports unless they can find the passengers, enough passengers, to make a profit out of doing so.
I flew "Business" class from Kiev to Odessa last summer. Between getting to the airport, waiting for the flight, taking a little bus to get to the plane, flying, deplaning, waiting for luggage, etc... the whole thing took about six hours. The "Business" class was worse than the worst economy class I have ever been on anywhere.
I took a taxi back and it took about five and a half hours and cost the same.
The tables in business class are bizarre. The only reason I fly is that the trains get in at an inconvenient time.
Got a free upgrade on Ukraine International from Kiev to Amsterdam. Was really excited until I got in the palne and discovered the seats were the same, there was about 50cm more leg room and I had swapped a nice aisle seat for a middle seat.
I am visiting a couple girls in february. I am using Kiev as a base. Kiev is my middle city with Lugansk and Simferopol as 1st and last stops. This way I don't get stuck at airport in Kiev very long. Also you have to be
careful because some internal flights in Ukraine use a second airport in Kiev (IEV). To fly from one city to
another always takes you back to Kiev. Maybe once I get comfortable in the country I will use trains, just
feel safer on a plane. I think the closest airport to Sumy is Kharkov. Have not had to visit a small city yet.
Boredfukka,
Exactly the case. It costs more to buy the airline tickets while in the West on the internet, and it costs less to buy the same tickets while in Ukraine itself, even for a Westerner.
VNVnation,
How much was the taxi fare from Kiev to Odessa? How did you get a taxi driver agree to make the eleven hour round trip for the single fare? Did you use a big taxi company? I'm interested because I might be making that trip in January. Yeah, I know, it's frigid in January!!! :)
Philly: I think my taxi from Odessa to Kiev was around $100, but I can't remember for sure. They offered a couple of different prices based on the car: a 1999 Mercedes S-class was the most expensive, the beat-up Soviet car was the least. I took the one with the middle price and it was fine.
I arranged it through my hotel (Mozart), although you can book through a number of companies. The so-called American Business Center on the main street can arrange it for you, although I think it cost more.
Kingarthur: I also took a cab from Kiev to Sumy roundtrip once. It was about five hours and cost $100.
This may be a dumb question. That's okay. I've asked dumb questions before.
In western Europe, I find that getting around by train, even for some moderate distances, is far more convenient than dealing with the hassles of getting to and through the airport, clearing security and onto the damn plane. For instance, I wouldn't even dream of flying from Brussels to Paris. Frankfurt to Berlin, you'd have to be out of your mind to fly. Munich to Vienna, same deal. Invariably, the Western European trains are in good repair, clean, and they run on time.
How well developed FSU train system ? What kind of condition are the trains in ? Do they run on time ?
Travelling to small cities, trains is the best option, taxi too expensive.
