i have been e-mailing a lady from tomsk for about a month now and thing are going smoothly, i have a few quesyions to ask of you more experienced guys.
i) i have a bad phobia of fyling and cannot bring myself to fly, after reading these topics i understand that it is almost impossible for my lady friend to get a visa to come here.... is this right or is it possible?
2) if i ever managed to fly, and things went well, what is the best and quickest way to bring her back to the uk? is it better to bring her on a fiances visa or to marry the poor girl out there? (not wnating jump right in but must consider the options).
3) is there other options that i have not thought about?
Even if my advice to you sounds crude in its delivery, please accept it as an honest thought to help you achieve your goals.
To form a real bond and lay a solid foundation with any woman from a faraway land you MUST meet her and her family in person, at her home town.
We always advocate every man to prepare himself diligently before traveling to FSU or anywhere else to avoid the potential pitfalls awaiting the inexperience or unaware.
Knowledge of language, landmarks, customes, currency,
"DOs/DON'Ts" and many other things are fundamental needs.
Being able to fly is like being able to walk.
Your fear of flying is a TREATABLE temporary disability.
In this day and age, not being able to fly when we try to connect from people from far places is just as bad as not being able to see them or talk to them.
Your lady and/or her family may reject you outright by thinking "What other serious weaknesses does this man have if he can't even get his arse on a perfectly good airplane"..or..."If he can't fly, does that mean that he will discourage our daughter to come visit us after they marry and have children?"
I suggest you prepare yourself. Start by doing what you have to do to overcome your fear of flying. I don't say it will be easy, but you must do it.
Good luck , mate
3) about 2-3 days in the bus (london-moscow) and app. 4 days in the train (novosibirsk) and then 270 km by bus again. in each direction. (btw if she lives in seversk then you are not allowed to visit her at her home).
ron, whats the score with not been allowed to visit her at her home in seversk?
GLTALLTOAD, what do you mean the pitfalls? is it a place not to be one your own or without being a kung fu expert or something?
Scoot,
Travel to foreign lands always carries the risk of pitfalls, meaning obstacles, difficulties, nasty surprises or unsuspected disappointments...That's the context I used for pitfalls.
Land/train travel in FSU is risky, dangerous and time consuming.
Spend the time trying to cure your fear of flying, instead.
It's a much more beneficial proposition, long term wise.

GLTALLTOAD, have you been to russia?
any ideas on my first two questions anybody?
thanks for the advice GLTALLTOAD, will try to find info i need, where to stay and customs ect...
I have an issue of the magazine 'Russian life' that has an article about Tomsk. It mentions that Tomsk was up to 1992 closed to foreigners and that the suburb of Severk (also known as Tomsk-7) is still closed to non-residents. Probably because of a nuclear weapons complex and a nuclear accident in 1992.
Tomsk is still an example of the real/old Russia only to be found in Siberia or the far-east maybe less of a place to go for someone who has not a clue as where he is going, although it is also a University city so English is probably not so much of a problem.
There is a direct flight to Tomsk.
Of road travel i hear bad things like never go alone, never go into a car where there are two men etc. But is train travel also that dangerus? I would only be afraid that when i sleep they would steel all my stuff. (I was hoping if i did go on the train that i could bribe the cabin-baboeska to look after my stuff). Maybe Pticka can give me advice about train travel?
It is difficult for a single girl without real estate or significant assets to get a visa, but it is been done.
from reading an American forum about the subject i got the idea that marrying her does not help in the visa stuff. From a story from a Dutch guy that married a Chinese girl i'm certain that for Shengen countries it does not help. Btw England has its own rules for questions like this it is best to ask professional help, in England there are specialist lawyers on the subject.
i know that this girl works in tomsk, and has a steady job, how much money she has i am not sure but will this be taken into acount for her visa app as i would have thought that tnhey would see this as commitments to go back home for...
Read also http://forum.fiance.com/forum2.asp?Main=ShowTopic&topicid=1052 , that is on this forum, it's about America so it might not apply, I can only give you some information on a Shengen tourist visa but that also does not apply to you. (Needs Euro 34 a day invitation or hotel reservations and to and from travel tickets)
The general way how it is done is as far as i know.
1) write some
2) visit her there, take some pictures of you together, keep plane tickets hotel reservation etc as proof of meeting. It is not required according to visa regulations but it seems to be adviced.
3) get her to you on a tourist visa (here might be a big change)
4) When she is back in Russia start the paper work for a longer/permanent stay in England. It does not matter where and when and maybe even if you get married. But looking at the American story it might be different there.
It appears that you are the only English one here, i have seen it discussed on www.maelstrom.stjohns.edu on the list Russian women lovers or something like that.
as i would have thought that tnhey would see this as commitments to go back home for...
Thats correct, you might also be asked to be a guarantor or something. Things that help believe that the girl goes back are a steady job, children, real estate, wealth, a own business etc.
i forgot to mention, but dont know if it helps, this girl has just been to USA to visit her brother. would this be of any help in getting a visitor visa for england?
has anyone been to tomsk before? olga... do you know much about it?
Visit her brother, uh?
Why do the hairs in the back of my head just spiked like those of a hunting dog, uh uh uh?
I'm a mere toad after all...
Scoot,
I suspect that if she truly has been to the US, it was to be with a man who got her a fiance visa but later decided not to marry her or viceversa...not a brother.
Find out where the brother lives and come see him, instead.
The transatlantic oceanliners are fun to do and a ticket to US from Moscow for her is only a few hundred U$S
GLTALLTOAD, her brother i have seen on a photo and he has just returned to visit the family.
anyway maybe you can tell me if this rings true when i asked her about comming over, and no she did not ask for any money...
I learned about trip to England. I need to do the passport and
the visa.
Cost of registration of the visa - 70 euros + consular gathering.
Term of registration: 4-7 days.
Necessary documents:
- The passport for travel abroad
- 2 photos 3 X 4
- The reference on the form with a seal, with the instruction of the
revenue
- The filled questionnaire
- The previous passport for travel abroad
c'mon Scoot, you don't have to fly, there is the tunnel to France and then you can go by train, long and tedious I grant you, but possible, fiance visa is not difficult to obtain, I am just of to Italy to see my fiance, but feel free to ask for advice when I get home Wednesda
Scoot
I don't know how possible it is for her to get tourist visa to uk, definitely it would help her application if she has travelled and returned before.
But really if she has not been turned down for a visa, then her coming on fiance visa is fairly quick and straight forward, I'm married 18 months, my wifes took just a few days after her interview, we live in UK.
BUT, saying all this, Toad has given you the best advice, you really really must meet her family, this is very important in Russia, its a fundamental part of future relations, the family is a very important part, you are not just marrying the woman but the family as well.
One way or another, sorry you need to go there, anything else I think you are asking for problems, more than I can list here.
Scoot:
seeing as this page has plenty of echoes (toad!!),I can only agree (echo??) what PaulM has said as my story is almost the same as his.......to try and consider a way of getting your girl here without visiting first is sure to end in failure.
As I'm sure you will have noticed there are some very knowledgeable and helpful people on this forum.....UK and US based not to mention many friends down under too.....and I probably have forgotten someone/somwhere..(apologies for that),ask and learn my friend and let others experiences work for you!
thanks gladiator, you seem to be a nice person wishing to help.
has anyone (im sure that someone has) tryed to bring a lady in from russia on a visiters visa claiming that she was visiting a freind (for that freind to be the wife of a person from the uk,who's wife is russian and now living here with somebody from these very pages).
would that work?
