I am completely unsure as to what to do. I have found round trip tickets to Moscow for under $600 USD. I do not know if flying into Moscow is the closest I can get to Azov. None of the travel sites I have visited seem to know where that city is. What is customs like? Should I get a hotel room or an apartment? I plan on staying for 2 weeks. ANY advice would be very helpful.
I travel to Rostov-on-Don often to see my girl, and it is not too far from Azov, and probably the closest airport. I fly to Moscow on Delta and use Aeroflot-Don Airlines from Moscow to Rostov. I had to purchase my ticket to Rostov seperately online from Expedia.com. There are also some other airlines that fly there from Moscow, but they fly out of other airports and it will be a major task to make it to those airports. If you want you can e-mail me and I will tell you everything you need to know about the airport in Moscow.....if you don't know you will get burned by the taxi drivers....
You don't need to take a taxi.
This interesting. I am thinking of going to Mariupol. I think it is close to Rostov-on-Don. So I would fly to Moscow instead of Odessa and then change for Rostov and then a train? What about Odessa? It seems like that would be a better place to land.

I traveled from NY to Kyiv on Aerosvit and then to Mariupol on the local airline. I think if you travel to Russia you have to get a transit Visa, I am not sure of this but seems I came across that requirement. It would only add one more thing to aquire for your trip. Aerosvit will land in Kyiv at 11:45am and the flight to Mariupol leaves at around 7pm.
Ok I was able to find slightly lower rates for flights from here to Rostov On Don. Great! Now I'm stuck finding a place to stay. Would it be cheaper to rent an apartment for 2 weeks or stay in a hotel? I can find apartments in cities other than the city I want to go to. I also have a question regarding what I should bring with me. I have a camera I want to bring with me but am a bit worried about loosing it. Would it be safer if I just bought a less expencive camera to bring with me? How safe would my equipment be?

Groon,
My girl lives in Azov and I have been there to see her a few times. There is only one hotel in Azov. It is called the Azov hotel near the park in the center of town. I go the cheapest room there. It was rather nice. It cost me less than $200 for 10 days stay. You can get a 2 room suite there too. The bus (mini van)can take you from Rostov to Azov. It is much cheaper than the taxi. The Taxi is approx 500 rubles. The bus is only 50 rubles. dude. I spent $500 for 2 weeks there. That included all mf my meals eating at a couple nice places there and hotel. I recommend eating at the hotel and there is a nice place on the back side of the park near the water. Do not drink the water there. It has lots of bacteria growing in it. TRUST ME>>> Also it included buying gifts for the family and my girl. There is not much to do there although the people are great. But watch out for the police. They will stop you in that town for nothing. Once tey know who you are, you will be fine. The town is pretty cool. They do have a couple museums and parks there. Also the center of town is very nice to take a nightly walk. If you don't mind me asking, who are you going to see? My girl will be going to Moscow for round two for the interview in December. By the way, The town only has about 18,000 people there. They all know each other. Rostov is the closest airport to fly in at. I fly in there when i go. Be careful of the guards. They will ask you for money. about $50 rubles. The airport is pretty scary from the back. And do not worry about the police with semi automatic weapons pointed at you when you get off the plane. It is pretty standard. When ou change over money there, they will hit you with a 10% surcharge. Make sure you have brand new bills. Make sure you have an inturpretor. You will need it.
One more thing. bring a cheap digital camera with you. Your bags will go thru at least 2-3 x-ray machines. If you use normal 35mm film, you will lose most of your pictures. If youdo not have a digital camera, put your camera in a lead bag. Aslo remember where you are. you ar only abour 450 miles from Chechnya. I learned a lot while being there. If you want to know about some "dos" and donts" let me know. My girl Anna's best friend lives in Florida and I know her friend in Azov too. It took me about 2 days to get used to the old town. It may scare you at first. There are very old buildings, the streets have holes in them and the wierd noises.. you you will see. Take care.

Any advice about getting to Mariupol? Is it near Rostov? She is thinking to meet me in Odessa. Is this better? Should I plan on spending more time in Odessa or can I find a nice hotel in Mariupol? All tips gratefully received. Thanks
Iz, Your best bet is to go into Odessa because you will need a transit visa to go thru Russia. Azov is only about a 45 min to an hour car ride. I never crossed the border.
