Well the much anticipated time has come and after two hours 4 hours on the phone and ICQ last night, Lena and I ironed out the best times and ways to meet.
I will fly from LAX-Frankfurt. Ekaterinburg via Lufthansa (because someone posted the have more comfortable seats)
We'll spend one night and day at a hotel near the rail station, then ride the train to Tyumen (5 hours) and stay at her apartment for the rest of my stay.
Now, before I ship off my passport to some unkown agency to get my visa, I would like to know if any of you has any real time satisfying referrals you could give me.
The time avaialble is limited if I want to make it in time for Woman's Day.
Thank you in advance for the info.

PS: If you know of any special requirements for amphibians to enter Russia, please let me know. Thank you
OK, the original plans must be changed if I want to be there before March 8.
I just found out it will take Elena at least a whole month to get the letter of invitation processed, then two weeks for the original to arrive here...then two more weeks from that point because nothing can be done with out it...
(Welcome to international inmigration redtape once again , Toad)
Thank you, Olga and Ditto.
I will be renting an apartment in E-burg on Sovetskaya St. from Cityrealtyrussia.com
According to their website they also process visas.
Olga, do you still suggest I go with a different visa processor or is it more efficient to let the realty agency handle the whole thing?
Once I'm in E-burg,with a paid for apartment, what do I need to do if we want to spend a few days at her place in Tyumen?
Thank you for the help,
Toad
PS:I am arranging my own flight via LAX-Frankfurt-Eburg by Lufthansa.
Toad we will be in Ekaterinburg at the same time. I fly on 4th March will arrive 10pm 5th. I got my visa from the place Olga recommended above. You don't have to worry about the letter of invitation they take care of that for you. The whole thing was $179 with another $10 for pictures. They did a good job I recommend them.
Remember you must register with the OVIR within 3 days from arrival or you turn into a pumpkin.
invite's can simply be bought over the net. 2 days and you've got it, but don't save a few bucks and choose a reputable site, there's many. This invite will be checked at the embassy/consulate when processing your visa, which takes (here) about 9 days.
You'll make 8/3, no worries.
Wether they'll let you in dunno - loose the flippers? ;-)
Passport express will get your visa and letter of invitation for $104.00. If you need it befor two weeks it will cost a litle more, otherwise you will have it in 2 or 3weeks. http://www.passportexpress.com/
Also, pasport express is recommended by the Russian embassy in washington and new youk because of their long relationship with them.
They are cheaper than russia-visa.com/
Also, yes, Lufthansa is the only way to go. more leg room than air france or delta.

I have used the organization that Olga recomended twice now for a Ukrainian Visa. 10 days not counting shipping time. I use priorty mail so I can track the envelope.
If I were you i'd make a photo copy of my passport to take with you in case yours gets stolen or lost. Use caution at the rail stations. Going to Ekatrinburg shouldn't be bad because its pretty deep in Russia, but you run a risk of coming across pick pocketers so be cautious where you keep your vaulables. I used gotorussia.com and had good results getting my visa, but I think passport maybe slightly cheeper. Have fun and look forward to hearing the stories.
Thank you for the good wishes, Velcro..
(Damn, you sound sticky, mate)
I have the traveler's 3rd eye when it comes to pickpockets. Having lived in and traveled in latin america has its advantages.
Tomorrow is the first big day.
1. Book flight
2. Get confirmation
3. Send passport with flight confirmation and itinerary for visa.
4. Begin gift list for Lena, her Mom Nadya, and her brother.
5. Start counting days till D-Day
Just one comment. I met a lady in Moscow, from Anapa, last week. I too, brought gifts. (Baked the chocolate biscuits myself) and came away disappointed. Despite warnings to the contrary, I contributed to her email costs and her train costs to see me in Moscow. I do not regret this. It was my choice, so no lectures please. Put it down the the "cost of doing business".
My realisation? It's one thing being attracted by pictures and words, it's a different matter meeting a lady in the flesh. Mine was not a scammer but did concentrate too much on immigration issues at too early a stage in our relationship. My desire was to get to know her for herself and then move on to discuss the mechanics of getting her (and her brother) out of the country later. She was putting the cart before the horse and I baulked at the lack of romance.
I had a plan B and am in St.Petersburg now, enjoying it.
I had a little trouble getting the exact flight itinerary I wanted. I would have much preferred to fly back directly to LA from Frankfurt instead of having to stop in NY.
Judging by Lena's reaction when I called her cell phone to tell her that my flight was confirmed, I seriously doubt I will need a plan B...:)
My ears are still ringing...(Damn, these Russian women can scream when they're happy and excited!!..:)
Hi QC,
I kind of endorse what Toad said, my girl is impatient to see me also, as is her little girl. I understand what you went through and sympathize. I also have reservations, who wouldn't? Meeting cara a cara is the only real hurdle left. Both of us have talked this over and we feel the same way. Each is concerned for the others non-disappointment. Fortunately Marina isn't thrilled about coming to America. It is a big step. In Russia she is somebody and would have to give it all up. She has extensive family and knows America well. Yesterday I found out she was driving in Chicago. She is familiar with America and is not impressed. Fortunately she likes me and is not concerned where I live. She has never mentioned the process once. We have joked many times about the fact that she frezes her rubia ass off while I am always in the sunshine. You would think (and I have seen it mentioned more than once)that my sun, beaches, palm trees and flowers year round would be an influential factor. NOPE, couldn't care less. It is nice and she likes it but the man comes first. Try that one out with an American woman.
Frankly, the legal stuff is mostly my problem and she is more interested in me and our relationship, despite the fact that she is an accomplished attorney. Before somebody says oh that's Russian law her knowledge doesn't count think again. She has a certain mindset about these things and if she needs to she will learn our methods quickly.
I want us to meet again in England in June, every time I try to discuss this she takes a wait and see viewpoint. With sincere affection I might add.
That is why I couldn't understand id's viewpoint in another thread. Largely you can tell if someone is shining you on pretty quickly. I tried to develop a plan B but it all fell through (sort of) however it is obvious that it will not be necessary.
I consider that despite tailoring my choices to what I like to think are sensible parameters I have received very good luck. I very quickly struck lucky not once but twice and that does not include the other very nice women I have met. That is why it is hard for me to understand that some find it difficult. I guess I have just been super lucky. I hope it continues and wish everyone else the same good fortune.
I need to know how long it takes to get a visa? I'm in the process of getting my passport which takes 6 weeks, 3 weeks if I want to pay more to get it earlier. I am going to see my girl in April (Tver, Russia) and will fly into Moscow. Also if there is anyone that can tell me what airport to fly into (which one is better SVO or DME)? I have read about a lot of awful experiences of foreigner's going thru SVO airport. Would it be best to fly into DME? I surely don't need any conflicts with my visa at customs.

This is going to be fun. I'll see you in Frankfurt Toad. We will try some schnapps there and some vodka when we get to E/burg. I am bringing codeine and am hoping for a blissful state of unconciouness flying over. If I am asleep wake me up and we will find a bar. Marina says lets have dinner on the Saturday.
Curt
When you get that passport throw in your app for the Russian visa immediately. Use the Russian Visa service mentioned in this thread earlier. It is easy, you don't have to worry about invitation letters or anything they will take care of it. $179.95 plus you will need a photo. Plus figure out if you are staying in a hotel or apartment or with your lady. If it is in an apartment or with her you need to register with the OVIR within 3 business days. She should be able to help or there are services. Personally I don't want any part of it and she is handling it. Good Luck.
We're on..!!
Last night we spent another two hours chatting on ICQ.
I got bombarded with questions until I had to say 'Stop'.
I told her what things I consider important, like spending time with her mother, having a nice dinner on Woman's Day, visiting Gregory Efimovich's home and meeting up with you and Marina before I fly back, I suggested she prepare a simple day by day schedule so we both can have a good idea of how we'll spend our time together.
Here it is...minus her suggested intimate play moments...:)
March, 5. Arrival. Kisses and hugs at the airport. Night at a hotel close to the railway station.
March, 6. Purchasing of tickets to Tyumen (and tickets back for March, 11, and for Lena – March, 13). Trip to Tyumen (5-6 hours by train). Adaptation to Lena’s cold apartment. Dinner at Lena’s mother.

March, 10. A tour around Tobolsk visiting Tobolsk Kremlin and the last settlement of the Romanovs’ family, bone-carving museum. (Should we hire a professional guide? Then it would be more interesting.) Trip back home. Dinner at a café “Attic” with Lena’s mother.
