Does anyone know if there is of any advantage to try to make reservations in advance via online?
We will take the train to Tyumen Sunday, March 6 morning, then back to E-burg Friday, as early as possible. Lena will also take the train back after I take my flight back home...all in the same week.
What do these train rides cost?
I'd like to be able to buy all the tickets at once and get it over with.
In Russia there is not much need for making reservations on the trails and planes. You can show up the day before and buy a plane ticket no problem and the prices are still reasonable. As for the trains.. you can usually buy the ticket right before you go.
The girl I am talking to told me that an express train from her city to Kiev about a four hour trip by car was 3 dollars. And as far as I know she didnt ride in a private room or whatever they call those things on trains.
toad:
is your lady meeting you when you fly in?
if so I would echo olegnay and let her get the tickets for both of you,as the authorities in this part of the world still have a rather quaint notion that foreigners should pay a darn sight more than locals.
Also the private compartment is most definitely the way to go......very comfy......and most importantly very safe.....:))
Just to translate Glad's BBC-English to you Toad :)
a private cabin is private, and it can be locked from the inside. 2 or 4 berths, and buy the lot.
Traintravel there is cheap for you, don't sweat. It is THE means of transport for them, flying is more 'upmarket'.
If I may give you a tip: when travelling in such close quarters with her, just in case when you'll get bored bring a glass jar with some live flies in them. Close the windows, release them and have fun! ;-)
Fair enough,
Yes, she is meeting me at the airport and made it damn clear she does not plan on leaving me alone for a minute.
I definitely planned to use the private compartments on each of the train rides, that's why I thought pre-arranging it would be more convenient. Oh well...less for me to worry about now.
Now I can move on to other important things.
Like gifts for her mother.
Any suggestions of what to gift a classy lady pharmacist in her mid 50s? I'm glad hers is a small family, lol...shopping for gifts is NOT one of my strong traits.
TD,
She promised me an ample supply of home grown crickets and other delicacies...:)
for selecting gifts for far-away persons (those you don't have a 2nd chance for) I use inside-info when available. What I then also add is something small from myself, more like a souvenir, and irrespective of that one hits bullseye the lot is appreciated AND shows some effort.
All you want I suppose, so I'd ask her.
A real brand-perfume (not an eau de toilette) she is fond of always goes down well, but for this you simply NEED info. But a doll, dressed in your local outfit/costume (Amish? :) will go down as well, especially when she collects dolls.
So ask. It's no less of a surprise because you want several suggestions, not one.
For herself also buy flowers at your stopover, and do not even try to smuggle them into the cabin but ask the stewardess to put them up safe & in water. They always do, no sweat. You might get neglected somewhat when hugging her hello, flowers bungling on her back, but hey, I'm sure you'll understand such inborn reflexes.
whatever Toad presents it'll be an odd one, I mean, how could it be any different? ;-)
You buy whatever bunch you find suitable, and indeed count but later. Chucking one can be done in various ways though, from stewardess to whoever will be accompanying her. One also can give the bunch minus 1, removed right in front of her, and give her the lone one later.
Not because this can make a very nice gesture, no, simply because you're too stingy to bin one - of course, and THAT you tell her!
Then you'll need goodluck indeed :)))
(all in my best immitation of the worst accent imaginable, flavoured with a rrrrrolling rrrr not unheard of beyond the Cairns)
OK,
Lena is a multilingual translator.
And I've decided to buy her a laptop that can help her with the work she does outside the office.
Has anyone here done that?
With what long term results? I'm sort of wondering if service and repairs for these things is widely available there.
Any particular brand or operating system?
I know I'll need to get a converter for the 220v.
TD,
The onboard RED flowers are on the list already.
I'm sure I won't be the only one with them on the Frankfurt-Eburg flight......(hhuummm, I wonder if I can find some with those tasty little fruit-flies at the stop-over airport)
I've ruined more laptops than you've bought. The cause the environment used in, not any clumsy use to blame. One (1) make that survived, still being used in fact, is what is now HP.
I know they've got 'auto-switchers' as psu's, ranging from 110-240vac - Ask! - would save you the extra outlay for which you could buy her a small mouse (no filthy jokes here). Buy cordless (bluetooth), and make sure the lt can 'see' it. Don't save on the spec (r/w cd at least, some extra memory = nice) when you buy. Whatever processor you choose - NOT a Celeron!! (doubt if available). If she's got a camera get something to which memory-devices (sticks, cards etc) can connect, and such thing IN the lt rather than external.
XP is mandatory these days (and stable), and when buying get SP2 installed also (if not already part of XP, but ask). I'd install a legal OS (like XP) to get it across the borders, and better have all slips/documents ready (to pay tax on). Once there she'll install whatever YOU pay fortunes for, as cracked/pirated sw is really abundant there.
Toad - dunno the HP-range. Best is to buy a real P4, better than Centrino. Uses more power but really is better. Modems and network-cards are normally standard, but maybe ask if she ever needs a specific network.
If you really want to go overboard then buy a second (identical) battery-pack (if it can be removed easily!), and tell her to drain the damn things before charging them. This still is the achilles-heel of portables, and having a spare (in fact use 2) is best.
Brilliant! Flowers in Frankfurt. I was wondering about that. The flight is only 5 hours so no big deal they will survive no problem. I had a single artificial rose, very nice but still weak. I couldn't figure out how to get real flowers. Sometimes the simplest answer is the one most easily overlooked.
I shall now go and smack myself in the face with a kipper as punishment for being stupid.
I actually bought 2 single red artificial roses - one for her and another for her daughter. I also got 2 small heart shaped boxes of chocolates. Now I find out that her daughter is allergic to chocolates. I am going to satisfy my sweet tooth tonight. Waste not want not! Speaking of which has anyone tried the Russian equivalent to dulce de leche? She also threatened to shove a Russian ice cream in my face when I arrive because it is supposed to be the best in the world. I graciously declined but does anybody know?
