Hello gang. International Women's Day is March 8th. This is absolutely the most important Holiday for those of us who have girl's over there. Outside of your girls birthday it doesn't get any bigger. That being said I will need to send some flower's or gift baskets. Has anyone tried the service that is advertised on this website? Are they reliable? I'll need to send something to the smaller city of Kremenchug in the Ukraine.
I would doubt that it is an international day:) And by the way he 8 of march long ago became the day of spring!:) Though of course men congratulate women on this day still:) But the original meaning is lost already....
Just wanted to share this information:)
December 25th - Our Christmas
January 1st - New Years
January 8th - Their Christmas
January 22nd - Her Birthday (in my case anyway)
February 14th - Valentines Day
March 8th - Women's Day
They sure have all these gift buying occasions well timed.
Ptichka,
It was day of Fabruary Revolution (overtheow of Rusiian emperor in 1917), 8th of March on now stile. Бабий бунт. That is why Клара Цеткин recomended to celebrate it as International Woman Day.
Ok I am back. I bought 4 beautiful scarves. One for the Russian Woman, one for her friend, one for her mother and one for grandmother. That was the last of the dough. Now I don't have any schnappes money for Frankfurt.
OK I digress. While we are on the subject of special days I want to bring up Guy Fawkes Day - November the 5th.
Now in England every 5th Nov we have great big bonfires and burn an effigy of Guy Fawkes on it. When I lived there I substituted Guy Fawkes for a life sized effigy of Margaret Thatcher. It is just my way. While the blaze is really getting going small children run around it attempting to burn themselves and everyone else with lethal fireworks. My brother was particularly good at this and succeded almost every year. It is a miracle the poor little scarred creature ever grew to manhood.
Bagira mentions the Russian revolution. Well Guy and some of his buddies tried this out in England in about 16 nifty noo. They smuggled in barrels of gunpowder and stuck them underneath Pariament right about where King James the 1st usually liked to sit. They covered the barrels with firewood and old members of parliament to hide them. Unfortunately they were discovered and there was some fighting and everyone was killed. Except poor old Guy who was tortured to death, a bit like what Martin is doing to me right now. So every year we celebrate the avoidance of our very own 911 tragedy.
Now my question is this, how do we get from celebrating the revolution of 1918 to Woman's Day? What is the connection?
I have explained why children are systematically maimed by fire every year in England so why are women celebrated on the day of the revolution? At least we have a reason and a lot of fun it is too.
Hello Iz. Ahhhh Yalta....fond memories there. If you are referring to the pretty young blonde Her name was Svetlana. 18 years old. Met her at a social party. The next day after we met we went on an all day excursion. I still had two more social parties on my schedule as part of my tour so I thought I would just call her again after. Well, it turns out she had to leave for her summer Holiday to her grandmother's home in the city of Kursk. I never got to see her again. There were so many women there that I just didn't feel the need to pursue her. She was a sweet girl and seemed serious but spoke no English.
izifaddag, people asked you about quality of the service, I assumed flowers, presents, not photos. you did not order professional picture. it was snapshots taking at the delivery. Some florists do not have good cameras. They are not photographers, they are professional florists, gift services.
Service Network Flamingo does great job. use promo code "forum8" at the checkout to get 5% discount.
Prices are 30-50% higher usually on valentine day and march 8, due to increase in wholesale price, and huge demand on these holidays. See March 8 specials. there are plenty of nice arrangements with tulips, that usually less expensive than roses. http://www.russianservice.com/2core.asp?cgid=121&cgtype=4
deanis, is absolutely right. March 8 is a big women's day... men should not forget. Women in Russia, and former USSR expect to have flowers and presents. This day is celebrated in the offices, schools, homes, everywhere.
Sorry Olegnay I didn't order at a busy time of year. I have sent 2 bouquets via Alexanders Tender Ladies much cheaper and the photo was excellent.
Sorry to be the bringer of bad news I am just telling the truth. I actually paid for three flower deliveries so I know. I love Fiance.com but your flower delivery servce sucks. If the florists don't have good cameras tell them to buy new ones. They charge enough. Not much to ask a good quality picture. Alexander makes it fun too.
The only thing I can say is that Alexander specializes in Ekaterinburg, nowhere else.
Nevertheless, guys, if you ignore this day - the 8th of March, be ready that even if yuor girl does not say anything, you lost 50% in her eyes. This is a great day here.
Izi, its up to everyone to chose this or that service but russianservice.com has a system implemented in fiance.com. This is not just advertizing. This system will guarantee at least that the fiance.com representative in this or that city will deliver flowers.
Oleg,
This was back in November with a different girl. She was in Mariupol, Ukraine. The flowers were beautiful, they were delivered promptly but the pictures were not that great and they were expensive.
Alexander's Tender Ladies is an agency right in Ekaterinburg, being as you guys are based in Eburg I am sure you know them. They have a great website with a ton of information and I sent 2 bouquets of roses through them to my present lady. I am sorry to tell you that I was able to send more flowers for less money and both the service and picture was super. I was actually told that it was a lot of fun when the girl arrived to deliver the flowers. I am not putting Fiance.com down I am just saying my experience.
Here is the breakdown for 5 roses:
Flamingo:
$47.41 + $15 for the picture = $62
Alexander:
$35 + $10 delivery, photo free, short movie free = $$45
I saw 3 photos, they are ok, with bad focus, and rom was dark. as I said florist in Mariupol did not have digital camera. I am sure you can always find somebody who will do it free for you:) take photos, make movie editing...:)
Bagira, of course I studied, and the information you mentioned I called "original meaning", wouldn't you agree that with time this changed. And that now, at least this is in Ukraine, the 8 of March is not the holiday which celebration is the "original meaning". Now it is the day of all women, and of spring:) Wouldn't you agree that with time meanings do change:)))
I noticed that yesterday I didn't do many explanations about the meaning of the holiday of 8 of March in Ukraine now, so I will do it today. OK in spring everything start to bloom, so starts women's beauty bloom again. Wearing 1 sweater instead of 3 warm sweaters, coats or jackets instead of fur coats, jeans or skirts instead of very warm trousers and so on:) So the new year starts with the new blooming beauty in everything!!! So to celebrate this event and to congratulate those who start to bloom again and again every spring, we celebrate 8 of March. Ok the meaning of this day in the history was big...but some things should be really changed.
I found this info on women's day.
HISTORY OF WOMEN'S DAY
In the beginning of the last century, the women's movement was growing with the push for the right to vote and gaining other basic rights. Women from different countries met in Denmark in 1912 to discuss the major issues facing women worldwide. However, the origins of International Women's Day begins in Russia when women in St. Petersburg started protesting in the streets for bread to feed their children, like women in Paris did 230 years earlier.
In the past, under the Soviet Union, as in Russia today, International Womens' Day became a mother's day, a wife's day, a girlfriend's day, etc.. Full of roses, candy and special appreciation, a Women's Day combined. It honors the women in a person's life; which is a cause for celebration. It became an important holiday for women -- a day for women to feel good and be happy. In Russia today, Ukraine and other countries in Eurasia (including Eastern Europe), its significance is even stronger.
We also celebrate 8 march, but nothing like that...
I think I really have to do some effort not to make a fool of my self...
I just hope the present will be there in time..
