I try my best to ask dumb questions so here goes. I am in the process of arranging travel to Ukraine but am undecided about getting an apartment versus a hotel room. I have looked in depth on the web (where else) and found that all of the places want payment in advance. I would like to just spend a few days in Kiev and then maybe travel to the Black Sea for a few days. The problem seems to be that if I leave the hotel short of my total reserved nights I will still be stuck paying the total amount for the total time.
I understand if I get an apartment that I will have to pay for the total time that I have reserved said apartment, but is the same true for a hotel?
Ice
The ONLY immediate issue with having a hotel is going to be if you intend to have your girl show up. In many cases (most, I think), the girl will balk at coming to your hotel.
Prostitutes are the normal visitors to a hotel, and you can't blame her for not wanting to be associated with that crowd.
If you are going to visit someone specifically, I think you would be better off with an apartment. In fact, your girl will very likely be able to assist you in that regard.
Ice,
Apartment rental websites have numerous apartments in Kiev, if you book for a short time you might have to pay a one night deposit in advance and if you decide to stay longer, once there, well you won't be thrown out on the street but you might have to move to another apartment.
Where on the black sea are you thinking, maybe Odessa or Crimea, some websites will have apartments in several locations, email them, negotiate, do a deal to the effect that you need X number of nights in total and will they allow you to be flexible, after all, business in business.
Ditto,
Apartment is the only way i will stay. They are all fully furnished with linens towels and fully equipped kitchens. Microwave, toaster ,coffee maker, fridge and some even washer and dryer, fold out bed for extra guest, double door security entry. All with hardwood floors and tile and quiet and exceptionally clean. All for 65 to 75 dollars a night(one bedroom) that is.About 40 t0 50 dollars cheaper than a state run hotel. Ask for a master size bed. And you guys are right, my dates and the ladies i know have always felt uncomfortable about approaching a man at a hotel because of the prostitutes there. They always are happy to meet you at your apartment or go back after you meet for a wine or such.
Ditto, go to the local grocery store on The main drag (Kreshatyk street) when you arrive and buy some breakfast and lunch things for cheap so you dont always have to go to a restaurant. I like things there when i wake up (and maybe she does too)!!!! They really smile when you serve that cup of joe with a roll in the morning!!!
I will give you my contact who runs the travel business . She has been good to me and i met her in person. Kate Krat of ARKTUR LTD I have used her three times.

If you want to be only 200 yards from Kreshatyk ask for apt on 10 Malaya Zhitomirskaya street. Where i stayed. You wont need a taxi for anything. On the other end of town the apts are on a street names Bassenaya Street but a bit of a walk. But still close to everything , but she has more . Also they will arrange airport transfers for you . the taxi driver puts your last name on a big card and waits at the gate.
jmolov is giving sound advice and information. Scottlf means well but his advice is not so good. You should never let your lady arrange for your apartment unless you have met her in person and know her already. She could set you up for a scam very easily. You arrive and suddenly there is a problem with the apartment you agreed upon but she has another one for double the price. Or suddenly your apartment is robbed during your stay. Just be careful guys. I know a guy who got burned this way.
I suppose that's true, but what's also true is that something 'reputable' is hard to distinguish for a foreigner. Smelling a rat should come as second nature, that sudden alternative apartment for instance, and then logical decisions must follow. One's safest bet is a hotel, especially with their gorilla's present, but I'd take to that as a last resort.
Of any apartment there's duplicate keys, it remains a matter of trust in any case. However, your warning is valid for those going a bit head over heels, especially those knowing hardly any details of her, or those just going for as much fun as possible.
In the end those who don't risk cannot win anything - surely you'll agree with that one?
You guys suggesting bad things about women, I'll have to let my buddy Toad know, never anything good to say, just scam slayers etc. etc. etc.
If you're staying away from one of the major cities then you might not have any alternative than to let the lady book it for you, I've done this umpteen time but then I ain't frigid.
Maxi,
Not that i know of but maybe she does. She tells me what is available , sends a map of the street it is on and scans photos of the apartment. also she can reserve any show tickets you want and airport transfers . Try to do it at least one to two weeks in advance though. She answers the e-mail usually the next day or the same day late EST in America. If you talk to her she almost sounds British and she did indeed work in jolly old England at one time. Tell her you talked to Jeff from the states. but the first street i mentioned above is right on the action.
You have pulled by fat from the fire. I called Kate and she was very kind, etc. I will certainly be using her services especially since I am going to Kiev when the damb Eurovision whatever will be in town. All the rooms are taken for the big shots or at least that is what she told me. She seemed like she would be able to help me out.
Thanks jmoluv
It's the biggest musical contest in Europe. Singers from all over Europe compete once a year. One representative from each country. The Winner's country gets to host the event next year. Big money and pride for the host country. The Ukrainian singer Roxana (I believe that was her name) won last year. So, the event will be held in Kiev. When will you be in Kiev Ice?
