When you get to Russia or Ukraine etc. You have a choice of the green lane or red lane. If you have more than $3000US you are meant to declare it. (red lane)
How do they know you have more than 3K. Is there scanning machines that pick up
US$ notes ???
Or is it all on honesty. In other words the good people declare & the crooks don't. Bit like the anti gun thing. Make rules to remove guns and only the outlaws will have them !!
I have seen on this Forum, people talking about wearing jewellery and talking about other gifts etc they disguise and their concerns that these items might get targeted. I have not witnessed any searching in the 3 prior times I have entered FSU. Was I just lucky on those days ??
I can only speak for Ukraine, but it is an honesty thing. You breeze through with $5000 undeclared, but don't get caught. If you have money left over when you go to leave and they decide to search you, you had better hope you don't have much left. Without a declaration on entry, they'll take the money and give you a good grilling.
Who would search an American or a European?:-) Our authorities will search only different guys from Arabian countries, Africans or people from the caucasian region.
Anyway, don't you recognize credit cards as a good way to kepp your money? I would be a bit scared to have more than 500$ in cash with me in Moscow...
Last week while in Moscow I read (and brought home a copy if you would like for me to scan it and send it to you) latest customs regulations. It says you can not use green lane if you are bringing in more than 10,000 USD. And when you leave you must use red lane if you are leaving with more than 3,000 USD. This was new information for me.
I have always arrived with more than $3000 and never been asked about money. I am sure they are more than happy if you will bring in a lot of money, and spend it. I agree credit cards are a good idea however. But I have had some difficulty using them to purchase goods in some of the smaller cities even when they display the "Visa" logo. As the people at Visa told me, just take your card and passport to the bank and you will have no problem getting cash.
I never went to Russia with loads of cash, I think thats nuts. I always use my credit or visa check card and bring a few hundred in cash. But I haven't been to any small cities in Russia so maybe its different there.
I also brought my card and passport in to the bank and got cash when I needed it, the people at visa are correct.
The article I have does not mention bringing in jewelry, but it does talk about bringing in items of cultural value, and those must be declared. The same for export of cultural items except for present day souvenirs and mass produced items which may be taken without reporting.
Thanx Guys. Thanx Neon. If you like to scan and send to me - be good. Can you see my eamail addy or not ???
What "yeahright" on about. Where he popped up from ?? Most of my overseas spending is from cash earnt $$ so Cash is my spender.
last 2 times into Russia & Ukraine, I took the 3K, I ended up bringing half of it home again. Both girls i have been with before, wont spend, wont let me splash out. I allowed $100 per day spending, I struggled to spend $50. Neither would allow waste of $$$
So others, there are plenty of honest GENUINE ladies out there (well 2 anyway)
