Having just got back from SE Asia tour, I'm now planning a summer jaunt into Eastern Europe, having been inspired by others experiences in the Ukraine and Moldova.
So. Am considering driving the van all the way from Portugal... coming up through Hungary... or flying Easyjet to Krakow, Poland, then train through Ukraine with stops at Lviv and Kiev prior to Chisinau. Anyone done the train trip and have details? Or know where to get the Ukraine visa in Krakow?
Despite the attraction of FSU women, I can't justify $50 per night for accommodation, when I know apartments can be rented on a monthly basis for far less. Anyone have any useful contacts for this in Chisinau or Kiev?
Also, some old hands here recommend guides/interpreters? Would be helpful.
Would be happy to 'chew the fat' with anyone whose going to be in the region during this period so feel free to email me. Will probably be in Lviv around the first week in July and spend 3 months in the region.
that van-thing I've done also, however not in Europe. You did it before, and now you may change to train, probably adding cost to the trip if only for acommodation - and sacrificing the advantages of having your 'house' with you.
Why?
I did not drive the van in Russia for a variety of reasons.. security, inability to read road signs, (at least those that existed), unavailability of insurance and the accommodation I had in St.P was less than $50 per week. Negligible.
I have the same feelings about drivng in Moldova and Ukraine. Feel free to convince me otherwise.
"Starting from May 1, 2005 through September 1, 2005 no visas are required for the citizens of Switzerland and the EU countries. This may be extended indefinitely".
No Visa required for EU citizen entrance into Ukraine???
Gentlemen - the door to opportunity in Ukraine is rapidly closing.
That was the great disappointment I think when I was in Latvia. The place was crawling with western European men. It was saturated with guys who were just visiting for a weekend. The women didn't seem to have any particual interest in western men uless they were extremely rich because there were so many of them.
Guys - go to Ukraine NOW and pick out your Ukrainian woman while supplies last. This offer will not be entended and is good for a limited time only.
Footnote - My Moldovan lady DID mention that travel for her into Ukraine had been made more difficult. When I met her - Moldovans were able to go to Ukraine and vice versa without a visa OR even an international passport (she did have to show her Moldovan ID). Now she is upset that she is required to have an international passport to go to Ukraine.
Moldova had 4,284 tourists in the first quarter of 2005. That's it. Just 4,284 tourists in three months. (Don't that many people visit Disney land every three hours or so?)
Of that 4,284, 15.2% were American or about 651 American tourists for the whole country in three months. I was one of them of course. That's about seven US tourists per day.
Moldova looks like it will remain a (relatively) untouchede paradise.
Evidently I cannot read at all. I looked at the webpage again and that was Turkey that is 14.9%. The US is 13.7% or 587. I am not trying to be funny with these posts. And I cannot beleive I look at a simple paragraph and screw up what it said THREE TIMES!!!
Please - everyone - do NOT follow that link. Because if I screwed this thing up FOUR TIMES I don't want to know about it.
We REALLY need a delete or edit feature. Or for me to get new reading glasses.
