I have seen some places listed on the internet and in the Moscow newspapers, and like you I have given them some thought but... two weeks ago while arriving in Moscow I read an article in the Moscow News written by an American (or was it a Brit?) about the difficulties he was having trying to get his visa registered at the OVIR because he was staying in a rental apartment. I read it with just a little intrest, but later in the week I had a nightmere at the OVIR office myself. Very surprising as we had a good contact in OVIR and she had helped me many times, and we "rewarded" her well each time. This time she told us we now needed so many special documents and only got registered the day before I left that city.
Check to see if where you rent will help you register your visa, or if you even need it. As I recall you have a business visa so it may not be a problem for you, but something for others to think about.
I've had good rentals going through...oops, I can't say any names here... (email me if you want).
I have a business visa also and it is a major pain to register outside of a hotel. Because the business visa doesn't have that invitation letter, some travel agencies won't/can't register it. I was quoted $100 once! I ended up getting a referral to an agency from the company (no names!) here in the U.S. that got the visa for me.
Thanks for the input. I had no idea there was a distinction between a business invitaion letter and a regular one. You live you learn :)) Yes I guess if it is a business letter it will be a business visa right?
My problem is finding a reasonably priced apartment in the southern part of the city. So far I have one and they will do the OVIR thing for $50. Nice apartment but for $85 a night?? Oh my aching ass.
For 16 nights that is almost an arm. Or a leg even :))
I am waiting to see what the lady says, she is in Samara right now and can't do anything until she returns July 2. This bloody apartment even has a piano. What the flaming hell do I need a piano for? I can barely manage the mouth organ !!
What a pain in the butt.
Iz
$85 is good price unless you are out a bit and away from centre. I just booked mine, cost $149 but in Arabt Street. It is only metres away from the NZ Embassy so I can annoy the hell out of them for 6 days.
Registering Visa was not a problem last year in Moscow. I stayed in apartment then also. I registered it at an office just off Main street. I will see if I can find its exact address in my laptop archives. It cost me $30US and I had to leave my passport there for 2 days (I think it was 2 days maybe 3)
Anyway I will get back to you on this as it can be a PAIN in the arse registering and no need for extra stress is there. What dates you going to be there ??
Hi Maxi,
Thanks for the help. Looks like I will be going for either 1 or 2 weeks late in July or early August. It is dependant on how long it takes the emabssy to process my visa and return it to me.
I have just had a place offered to me which is located in the south of the city near Bitebsk Park or something like that. $55 a night for a kind of 23 star place. Eridan Hotel it is called.
As for the OVIR there are various services for doing this. Last time Marina did this for me herself. It was all in Russian and there was no provision for foreigners. I will have to pay someone for this service. Should work out I think. Any info you can give me about anything would be welcome.

The street is “Tverskoi (Tverskoy) Boulevard” the number is ??? but I remember what the door looks like !!!! It is just off “Tverskaya Street” by the green belt gardens / park.
I haven’t got the exact address but it was 40 something ???
I will be there before you anyway so I can give you more accurate detail after the 18th July.
Maxi,
Is this the Eridan Hotel we are talking about or the OVIR office? This hotel is on Balaklavsky Prospekt. Or are you refering to another Hotel for $40 a night?
Izi
Izi. That place sounds pretty suspicious to me. The mater is that Bitebsk park(I don't know if it exists at all) is in Russian actually Vitebsk park then (V is written like "B" in Russian). if someone does not know yet, Vitebsk is my native city in Belarus. So Eridan is the best hotel here and its name is an ancient Greek name of the Western Dvina river. Sounds somewhat ridiculous....

Perfectly legitimate business found the hotel on many websites. Good reviews also. On one website it said it was near a particular park and I have probably spelled it wrong. There was always the reference to the metro station wherever I looked.

Sorry - that was the OVIR (invitation stamping place) office I used. You will need assistance with dialogue so take your lady with you.
But as I said above, I do not have the Street Number on me. I know exactly were it is and will find it myself OK. I will be there on 18th July so will get back to you then. Your apartment people probably can do this for you. It will cost you whatever way you choose. The system here in the FSU works very simply -- you just pay $$$$$$ and you get what you want !!!!!!!!!
My Fiancée just gone to the Doctor to get extension of a sickness work absence letter. She for some reason took with her 1 Box of expensive chocolates - 1 Bottle of plonk 1 jar of good quality coffee. She will get and extra 2 weeks tacked onto her holiday with pay now !!!!!!
You are so right about how to get what you want. My girl has taught me the same. Expensive chocolates are always a good bet. A nice bottle of champagne works well too, and for those that smoke fancy cigarettes are good. It's pretty much standard procedure there.
Thanks to everybody. I especially like the metro map. That is really helpful in understanding the city. I will more than likely stay in the Eridan Hotel. I am waiting to hear from both Elena and the people who are hawking the hotel to advise me about OVIR registration.
I am very concerned now about ths whole 'business visa' thing. this was Marina's idea and I am now not sure if this thing is worth bothering with. That is all I need after a long trip - a fight in the OVIR office about some bullshit visa.
If you are staying in a hotel more than likely they will register your visa...I'll bet it will be no problem even if you have the business visa. All you will need is their stamp on your immigration paper. I don't think you will have to deal with OVIR.....a very good thing.
izi. I was ofered an apartment for $800usd for, the month. but I did niot take it because it seemed like it was not a safe theing. I had to waite till the last minute to confirm. 2 weeks before was the earliest i cold confirm so I took an $80 apartment. But apartments are beeter for me and you only liove once. its right in the centre and I have seen photos of the inside. Hope you trip goes well. I leave in 20 hours
