Hello everyone. I am new here to the site and the forum so plese forgive me if this has already been discussed to death.
I have met a great woman from this site. So, I may be a little bit niave(SP???) but I have started to think about traveling to her city to visit. I have reviewed the embassy site and see we (US citizens) no longer need a visa to visit. Am I correct in my understanding. This will make traveling much easier I think.
Has anyone visited Ukraine from the US since these new visa rules where put into effect. What was your experience like? Did you fly to Kiev or another city? Did you change planes in Ukraine and what was your experience like. I know a bit of Russian, no Ukrainian and I am far from fluent. Have any of you hired an interpreter while there?
I am sorry I have a thousand mostly foolish questions I am sure.
Thanks for your help.. This seems like a great forum for tne most part.
NJ it will all depend on where you go in Ukraine whether it is Ukrainian or Russian.
No you do not need a visa any longer to travel to Ukraine. As for connecting Flights it is rather simple. I fly into Kiev from Chicago or Cincinnati. catch a connecting flight to Donetsk and then take a taxi to where my Lady lives. It really all depends on where she lives. As far as booking a connecting flight make sure you book one at least 2-3 hours difference after your arrival. I usually don't book a connecting flight until I arrive.
I haven't used an interpreter, but if you are going to Kiev you can find many at the language institutes for very reasonable prices.
Welcome to the forum. I do not have sufficient experience of the Ukraine to be much help but have travelled in Russia. Since no-one else has responded, here is my two-penneth.
1. Just go.
2. Visa information is available on the Ukraine Embassy web site.
3. Maxirat has some experience of the Ukraine and may be able to help. Others too.
Good for you for planning to go and askl stupid questions. That is what the forum is for. If you do not get sensible answers, then use the 'search' facility. There is a wealth of information. You just have to dig for it!
Hello NJ
As your are already aware - No Visa required anymore - Great !!!
You can stay for up to 90 days. flying internally in Ukraine is easy and transferring at Kiev is very easy. Just walk a 200 metres. You can use AeroSvit website http://www.eb2-quicktrip.com/VV/Reservation.do -- for internal. there is also a direct flight from New York to Kiev - this may be of help to you. I would imagine you could order your tickets for internal flights online and then collect at AeroSvit office in Kiev when you arrive. Customs is a breeze – say you are visiting as a tourist for site seeing – don’t say you are there to see your girlfriend – that seems to raise their eyebrows a little and they might look for gifts to b declared etc.
Trains are used my most citizens in Ukraine - but be careful of them. Go 1st class just to be a little safer - but you really don’t have much to worry about.
Flying cost is not a lot more $$ than 1st class train.
Russian is spoken throughout Ukraine – so use Russian language.
Thank you for the great advice. I will be flying out of NY to Kiev. My girl is in Donetsk. So, I will check out AeroSvit for the second leg. I am looking to fly out of Newark but the prices seem to be cheaper from JFK. It is just a hastle getting in and out of JFK (Traffic).
I will also keep in mind the trains. I am sure there is a train from Kiev to Donetsk. When we get to this point maybe she will even want to come to Kiev and spend a few days there then go on to her home. I am a little ahead of the game now. But, things are going very well.
I hope one day to contribute something worthwhile to the site. For now I am a leach:-)
Fly to Donetsk, forget the train. 60 bucks and you are in Donetsk from Kiev in one hour. About 12 hours on the train, and they suck.
It's not like trains in the states. Even first class isn't. Max is correct, is is a short walk from terminal to terminal and carry your own luggage, there are some hustlers there that want to carry your luggage there for about 30 bucks, I laughed my ass off.
NJ, If you're interested, send me a private email. My wife is from Donetsk and I have been there several times. We know a few interpreters also. Listen to Nas who listened to me. Don't take the train; a 12 hour ride for a 1 hour flight.
I am going to change in Kiev for Odessa. Do I have to collect my luggage and then recheck it in on the local flight? The entire flight from NY to Odessa is Aerosvit.
Yes Izi, you must collect your luggage and clear customs in Kyiv. I am doing the same except going to Lviv. The only people that do not have to clear customs are those who are changing planes to continue on to another country.
Yeah, Yeah, Domer thanks for the advice! Actually what set me back is when we went to pick up her mother from her visit in Switzerland and I saw the trains. I'm still wondering which car was first class?
The 1st class carriages are not to bad actually. I did 4 over night trips on them. But if you are travelling alone and on a limited timeframe - fly. It not a lot more expensive either but the $$ start stacking up if you start moving around with your lady.
I must say the overnighter 2 berth 1st Class cabins are good for - lets say - getting to know each other better !!!
Example of price - Kiev - Lvov one way for 2pax = $85US / Kiev - Moscow return for 2pax = $270US
It would pay to have your Lady do all bookings in advance for you regarding Trains.
I have been looking at this AeroSvit webpage and i am getting crosseyed . How in the flying fuck can anyone read this website ? The letters are so small and blurred that i cannot make anything out that is legible. This is driving me crazy. I cant get any prices to show up let alone trying to read what dates are available . Help. Am i the only one that is experiencing this ?
I cant get this page to open up. I am typing this adress exactly how you have it shown here. But i am trying to look at flights from New York JFK to Kyiv Borispol. I opened up on www.AeroSvit.com but the letters are so small and blurred and i cant get prices . I don`t know ............
