Here are some of the things I need to take care of: travel visa, which airport should I fly into, accomodations: hotel or apartment, transportation to and within Saratova, restaurants, and a backup plan if it doesn't work out with the one I am going to visit. Obviously I want to start talking to women in the area so I can see if I want to meet them. What is a reasonable distance given my time available and the time of the year I will be visiting. I am sure I have missed a number of things. I have provided some personal info below which may or may not be helpful in assesing my situation.
quick details about myself and friend I am going to visit: I live in Victoria B.C. - fit, teacher (English and Physical Education), good looking, age: 39 but look much younger, going to see 26 year old angel,- she found me through match.com Any help would be much appreciated. Note* If I have transgressed any forum etiquette please forgive me it is the first chat line post I have ever made. VicMan
I haven't been to Saratov, so I can't give you any details. You'll probably fly into Moscow and transfer from there; Saratov has a domestic airport. As far as living arrangements, I'm sure you can search google and find some options for apartments. Supposedly there are two decent hotels there too. The most important thing is to be independent. Don't stay with your lady and don't ask her to live with you (at least until you know you like each other). For a backup plan, search for agencies in Saratov; I'm sure there are a few.
I've used gotorussia for my travel arragements. I don't know if they can help with a visa (as you are Canadian), but they can get you airline tickets and hotel/apartment reservations.
However, the real reason I wrote this post is to ask you how your lady "found" you on match.com. It sounds like this is your first trip to Russia, and from the sound of your questions it sounds like you are new to the FSU dating process. I'd be a little concerned about the potential for being scammed on match.com. Many guys have been scammed by FSU "women" finding them on the free dating sites. Just something to be aware of.
I endorse every last word VNV said.
Yahoo Personals, Match.com amd Friend Finders are alive with FSU scammers. If they are 20 years younger than you, contact you first and write mechanical emails the alarm bells should be ringing long before she asks you for money.
be careful out there :))
Thanks for your help guys. Yes I am new to this whole process however I don't think I am being scammed. Please alert me if you see any red flags! Here are some of the facts: There is a 13 years difference in age. When people find out how old I am they are generally shocked because I look much younger. I have a good job and own a 2 bedroom condo.
What leads me to believe she is real: Her letters are not "form" letters Her letters are very specific towards myself. We both have asked questions regarding how serious the other person is and as a result have gone far beyond regular chit chat. Starting with would you be willing to leave the Ukraine if this relationship became serious. We both have written about ten letters. She never even really started to flirt until I sent her my new pictures after about 7 letters. There has never been any hints of presents or paying for anything. She lives with her parents and works in a gift shop. In one of her pictures a fairly new washing machine can be seen in the background. She has a computer but must go over to her friends to send messages because she does not have access to the internet. I don't believe she even has phone service. I see her as a very proud young women and she doesn't seem to want anything but perhaps a better life. She writes at about a grade 7-8 level however it has emotion and feeling behind it. Her letters probably take her quite a while to write because of the length and thought that goes into them.
I have had another experience where I believe the women was a total scammer. She says she can only send three letters through a company called Alcon (out of St. Petersberg). After that I need to pay $100 per month for the use of a translator and this was the only way i could get her address. She also hinted that she she would not be able to send any more photos because she didn't have a digital camera. She "dreamed of one day owning a camera." Incidenly the website has a service which costs about $300 per photo shoot. She also complained about having to pick up my letters at the office. Incidently there is a service for a nominal fee of $50 per month which will deliver my letters. I feel the second women is a scammer and I would bet because of the way in which it is written it is written by a man. Remember I am an English teacher and I have read and marked thousands of essays.
I will continue to write her and if I don't spot any red flags I will go to the Ukraine in Dec. What are some of the red flags I should look for? Any specific advice for the trip planning or trip? Thanks again!
Sounds like you are safe from being scammed so far. Just watch out for any requests for money (usually for tickets/visa, medical expenses, translation/computer costs, telephone installation, or to pay for the apartment that you will stay in). Some scammers will hook you emotionally with a couple of months of letters before they start asking for money, although from your description it doesn't sound that way.
HOWEVER....you might want to figure out what country you are going to. The last time I looked, Saratov was in Russia, on the Volga River. Why is your lady saying that she will be willing to leave Ukraine? Is this just a typo on your part, or is she saying that she lives in Saratov, Ukraine?
Hey Vic, 7th or 8th Grade level in what Language? You might be careful because their writing skills may not be well, but trust me their comprehension of the language is excellent.
Also I second VNV on The Saratov Ukraine, good luck finding that place. Larissa speaks four languages, English being one of them, her writing skills are not excellent, but neither is my Russian. You will be surprised how much english slang they understand.
LOL Vic, well take a lap for that mistake please! Oops I take that back, skate from endline to endline please.
We give each other a hard time here every once in a while. Welcome to the club. There are a bunch of guys here that will give you advice and are very helpful, especially Izi he can give the low down on the proper way of consuming Russian Vodka but a helmet is required in his method.
VicMan, do yourself a favor. Before you make any more investments find a service (search google) that will deliver a nice small bouquet of flowers to her apartment and also take a digital photo of her receiving them. This should cost you around $50US and they will send you the photo via email.Once you are sure she is not fictitious then go ahead with your plans if there are no red flags. There is no reason to doubt her honest intentions, you just want to make sure of it. :)
Good call Jetson. I used Russianservice (link at the top of this page) and had excellent service. You can select the option of taking a photo of your lady and get some confirmation that she is real. After that, I'd try to arrange a time when you can call her. If she doesn't have a phone, ask to set up a time when you can call her at a friend's house.
Then start thinking about your plane ticket, visa, etc...
(Just make sure you fly to Russia and not Ukraine.)
Hey Vic if you go to Ukraine, I will be glad to point you in a good direction. Also there are a few of us that have made trips there with plenty of contact information. We surely can and are glad to help with anything you need.
Get the Story straight OKM, we were walking by the casino and she asked me if I wanted to go in, I said I don't really gamble and If I want to watch girls dance we'll just go back to the apartment.
She thought all men from America went to Titty bars.
See what Hollyweird has done to us.,
