Does anyone know what the russian perception of the american accent is? In other words, when an american man speaks in broken russian, how does that appeal to russian women? I would think they hear arrogance and naivete.
For instance, when most of us hear a woman speak French, or speak with a French accent, that is beautiful to our ears. But when we hear a Japanese accent or Chinese language, that is not beautiful, can we agree on that? I know it sounds bad, but asian languages just don't sound romantic (forgive the pun).
This came up about 2 weeks ago when I was in Ukraine. I said she had a cute accent in English and she went on abpout how nice my accent was when I spoke the few words of Russian I had. Apparently it was a definite plus. She found it attractive.
More incentive for me to learn !! And I swore I never would !!
American accent in Russian... Hmmm... I am not a woman but I am a linguist. It sounds very funny, first impression. When they copy English accent in Russian movies they just insert linking 'r" wherever possible. This is the main feature of an american accent. Also Americans as ususal open their mouth twice wider than they should!:-) This also influences speach.
Anyway, I guess the same thing is always when you are speaking a non-native language. I can say that every day communicating to people from Norway to Bangladesh, Togo and benin I assure everybody that the most disgusting accent is heard when Africans speak English!
All I can say is that when you are in a foreign place the American accent definetely stands out and always seems arrogant .... ? I just remember how when I was in Stockholm there was an American lady in a souveneir shop who just had to yell everything she said, despite the fact that most Swedes can speak and understand English fluenty.
But I shouldn't speak, I mean every country has their fair share of ignorance ... I just don't want to come across as that sort of person! (except in Paris, you had to be an asshole there to get anywhere ... pushing your way through to the coat rack of Moulin Rogue ;) But from what I found out, the Australian accent is an opener all over Europe :)
