I am having problems finding what flights people use to fly from the United States to Russia and the Ukraine. I would be thankful for any help on this matter as I can find flights there but everything back is not available
I am traveling to Russia in two weeks and when I made my reservations I experienced the same thing. I was, however, using Delta Sky Miles and was limited by their available "discount" seats and thought that might be the problem. Many choices to fly there but spent over an hour on the phone with Delta trying to find return trips with them or one of their partners. Funny what we will do to get the "free" trip.
Delta has been the best for me for my many trips to Russia with direct flights to Moscow from NYC and (even better for me) Atlanta. There are also many other choices to Moscow using Aeroflot and Air France, and others. The rates are usually pretty good from major US cities to Moscow in the winter, but expect to pay almost double in summer. You have to be flexible and it's usually better if you fly mid week.
Can't help you with info about flights to Ukraine but there are several forum members that know that route very well and will tell you the best ways.
In the past I have checked orbitz.com, expedia.com and travelocity.com but I always did best going to Delta directly. Be careful because orbitz and the others always seem to try to give me much longer trips with incredible layovers and strange airport changes like flying into Newark from Florida and then out of JFK to some european city, or spending the night in NYC....and that adds a lot of expense to a bargin fare.
Spirit,
I work in the airline industry, part of my job is booking tickets, getting the best deal available, and I am good at this because I have learnt my way around the 'European' websites.
Travel agents get 'back-handers' from selling tickets on one or more particular airlines, they are on a percentage profit thus the higher the price, the higher their profit.
Check the prices on the websites, learn what the going rate is, and then contact a travel agent when you already know the price that you are prepared to, the prie you need to, pay.
Raging,
I have used Aerosvit for three trips to Ukraine. They only fly out of JFK in the US presently but they are nonstop to Kyiv and have connecting flights to limited cities in Ukraine. I have found their prices competitive. They fly 5 days a week, Monday and Wednesday are the days they do not fly. The best bet is to book directly from their website.
I second Bill on the Aerosvit thing. He is absolutely right. I would use them again.
I just hope next time they put the sheep and chickens in a separate compartment.
JUST JOKING!!
There weren't any sheep or chickens. Not many anyway. Just a few and they seemed to be well behaved.
How is the business class service on Aerosvit? I usually fly business on United, and it's usually pretty good, depending on the type of plane. They have nice seats, individual video, and decent meals. I flew Aerosvit business from Moscow to Kiev, and it was OK, but I'm wondering about the international business.
VNV,
I have been more than satisfied with the sevice on Aerosvit. There are around 24 seats in business class and there are usually 3 flight attendants for the cabin. Seats are comfortable and two full meals and a snack are served on the 10 hr flight. The food has always been very good. The price is really attractive...round trip is around $1900 usd including taxes round trip. The prices for the other airlines I have priced have all been $3000 to $6000 usd for the same flight.
Thanks for the report. I might try Aerosvit for my next flight. I've had a hard time finding a ticket on United for the dates that I want to fly. United is quite expensive if you pay full price. I usually buy coach and upgrade to business with miles.
One thing to keep in mind when using Aerosvit is that they are generally on time when leaving JFK but they are not so prompt leaving Kyiv. This has more to do with the understaffing at the government check points than anything to do with Aerosvit. They can be as much as an hour and a half late in leaving while waiting for passengers from connecting flights to clear customs, passport control and the final metal screen. Just something to keep in mind when scheduling your connecting flight back here.
