'Russia and Thailand agreed to do away with visa requirements for travel between the two countries as Thai Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra met with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, in the evening of Dec. 13.
Putin said that 100,000 Russian tourists visited Thailand in 2004 alone and predicted that the number would grow quickly thanks to the lifting of visa requirements.
The deal was important, as tourism was historically a key component of Thai-Russian trade, and that is now rapidly approaching levels that preceded the 1991 breakup of the Soviet Union, said Thaksin, according to The Nation newspaper.
