I have been writing to one lady since March 23rd and have exchanged 150 messages. About 14 messages per week. How does the local agency make money from me? What you describe is what I experienced. If you are dealing with the same agency then this is the deal. The agency will convince your lady that the safest and best way for you to meet is in Kyiv first. They will suggest that she takes an interpreter from the agency. The interpreter’s meals, lodging, and fee of $100 per day will be of course on you. They will convince her that she will be better off with someone that she knows from her hometown with her as sort of chaperone. You may be able to overcome this and meet in Mariupol or just meet her alone in Kyiv and use a local interpreter. Keep in mind however that even though you and her have been communicating for a period of time and may have a good relationship going…you two have never met face to face. On the other hand your lady goes into the agency daily and the manager and other employees treat her as family, all the time telling her that they are only looking out for her best interest and safety. I have been in the agency, I have watched it work. It will not be easy to convince her otherwise. In fact she may take your refusal as a direct attack on her “friends”. I went with the interpreter, and even though I paid a high price I can say it was very convenient. My lady was about a 3 on fiancés English scale. I rented a two bedroom apartment from Sherborne Guest house so the interpreter was there 24 hrs a day. She also doubled as a guide to Kyiv and that was handy. After three days in Kyiv all three of us went to Mariupol and my lady introduced me to her family and took me around and introduced me to all her friends. She wasn’t trying to scam me…she was just convinced by the agency that that was the best way. Another person that posted here from time to time was able to convince his lady to meet him alone in Kyiv. Afterward as I remember she was treated like a red headed step child back at the agency. Fortunately for her their relationship worked out and she is married to this guy and here in the US. This meeting is pencilled in for August at the moment and no definite arrangements have been made yet. I can see the benefits of bringing along the local interpreter, but at a cost. Last year I went to Ukraine and only needed an interpreter for the first day we were together. We needed to get some things ironed out, but after that we did okay without an interpreter. You will do a lot of pointing and trying to act out words but it was half the fun. It was a little frustrating when I could not understand what she was telling me but it was okay. If you have never traveled outside of your country you might need a translator to feel a little more in control but if you are like me you just "winged" it. We rode buses and taxis and I felt like a native even though I had no clue what she was telling the taxi driver. I also communicated to her that I did not eat fish and I let her order for me. I ate some great food. I would have not ordered it if I could read the menu. Next month I am going to St. Petersburg and Moscow and will meet another lady there. She can speak better english and I have been studying russian. I figure I should do my part to learn her language also. I also bought one of those language translators. So the grand meeting is almost upon me. This is pencilled in for August 19th. Mariupol lady will fly with son and local interpreter from Mariupol on Saturday and arrive in Kiev at 10:00 am. I will meet them at airport. They will depart on Sunday at 15:25. If Mariupol lady likes me, then I will be invited to join them back on the plane to Mariupol. Hmmm... so let's have a look at the estimated costs for 27 hour meeting Accommodation $100 Airfare $300-$500 Interpreter from Mariupol $200 Food for lady, son and interpreter $200 So to meet Mariupol lady will cost me $800-$1000! I believe Mariupol lady is a genuinely nice lady. I, in fact offered to fly her and her son to Kiev for 3.5 days at my expense from August 24th to August 27th. She declined because she was working on Friday. Her translator was also not available. Mariupol lady is very work orientated and never takes a day off work. I also offered to fly just herself to Kiev for 27 hours at the weekend. This was also declined. Ok, I could be a physcopath and she needs a chaperone. Fair comment. Now the problem as I see it, is that this translator in Mariupol will have translated over 500 messages by the time of scheduled meeting and will not have made any money from me. So translator has had to convince Mariupol lady to fly to Kiev and take her with her to try and make some money. I have asked for contact details of Mariupol agency from Mariupol lady so I can begin business negotiations, but no answer. This one person agency also only offers interpretation skills and I would have to purchase tickets myself, Olga. What will be my next move in this game of chess? Do I really need to travel to Mariupol and knock on her front door? Sounds like an adventure! Whilst it is appreciated that she needs to work as much as possible to put food on the table etc. it also goes against anything she believes in to pay for 3 return air fares to Kiev for one night. If the lady were thinking for herself then she would think that if Dave has USD500 available for air fares then why don't I (she) just invite Dave to Mariupol and then he will have this USD500 to spend on me (her). Just a hunch but this lady is not thinking for herself, she is being pimped! And now the problem of the translator not understanding my English. I sent this "I doubt if I can afford to fly 3 people to Kiev for a day and also pay your translator's fees as well. So this may mean meeting in Mariupol (MPW)." The translator did not understand this. Do I have to say, " I cannot meet you in Kiev" and be more direct in my speech? Of course I need all the prices to make a decision. Agency will not contact me, so how can I make an informed decision? I know what I would do, I would write 'I am arriving at Mariupol airport on Aerosvit flight VV145 from Kiev at 1725 hours on 19 August, can you be at Mariupol airport to meet me please?' There you are taking a decision and telling her what your intentions are and if you receive a negative response or no response whatsoever then it's time to move on. Martin P.S. I also sent my itinerary that stated my flight arrival at Mariupol at 17:25 on 20th August. I arrive in Kiev on August 16th. And then if I did meet her in Mariupol, I could then tell her what a wonderful few days I have had in Kiev. "It is a shame you could not be there, my Mariupol lady" And then she could dump me! Of course I have not booked my flights yet and could cancel the whole thing! After I had been dating my wife for 6 months I indeed overnighted in Amsterdam on the way out and another trip I overnighted in Vienna on the way out, no problem at all but were I to have spent a night in another Ukrainian city then I would have been questioned. I was questioned by her on what date I was arriving in Kiev, so there is an element of her not trusting me. I have just told her that to fly her to Kiev with son and interpreter would cost me about $800. Of course she (or translator) misunderstood and thinks that I cannot afford to fly myself to Kiev. And so the story continues on and on ... In a previous thread you recommended only communicating with ladies that speak English. Of course this is what I will do next. I have spent 4 months communicating with Mariupol lady, and then when it comes to arranging a meeting, you get all this fly me to Kiev for a day crap. Do these translators have to have a certificate of proficiency in English to be an affiliate? I hope so. Sometimes I have been told off for not understanding my lady's messages.
