I'm planning a visit to Ukraine, and wondering if as a US citizen I need a visit or toursit visa to Ukraine?
Kiev is too far north from where I want to be, so are there any direct flights to Odessa or other Ukrainian airports in the south?
Is it safe to visit Crimea? As you know Crimea was predominantly Muslim until Stalin force immigrated it's masses to central Asia, who began returning after break-up of USSR, and Crimea used to be part of Russian until Khrushchev donated it to Ukraine, so there may be trouble from Russians.
Will appreciate answers.
You've been reading too many books Goodman2, international operators into Odessa include Ukraine International Airlines, Aerosvit (via Kiev in the main), Austrian Airlines, LOT Polish, MALEV Hungarian, Czech Airlines and maybe some others also.
To Simferopol (Crimea) there are Turkish Airlines or Aerosvit (via Kiev).
You do not need a visa for Ukraine and if you're looking for a direct flight from USA to either Odessa or Crimea then unfortunately they haven't started putting long-haul widebody aircraft down in these airports yet :)
Crimea is OK! Just been there for short vacation... You can check the timetable and directions here.
I went to SIMFEROPOL and from this city it's easy to get to any place in Crimea. It's like 40 minutes by bus from Simferopol to Yalta and costs $2-$4 for a ticket. We stayed in Foros, it's a small but very nice city between Yalta and Sevastopol. The price for apartment in busy season is $30-$35 per night for modern fixed one room apartment with AC, washer and a view over the mountains or the Black Sea, very good 2 room apartment is about $50 with a great view over the mountains and the sea.
Right now it's a good time to go... The sea is still warm and most of the tourist went away, so prices are 30% cheaper.
Anyway, if you need help travelling to Crimea you can drop me a line at alexander@alexfriends.com I have phone numbers of people who rent apartments in Crimea with great views!
Hey Goodman2
They still have the KGB in Crimea bugging hotel rooms.
Just kidding!
I was in Crimea July of last year. I actually met a lady from Dnepropertrosvk and we took the overnight train to Simferopol. They a short bus ride to Aloshta. Stay in a report up the hill from the beach. Paid $200 for a double room for 5 days. This included 3 meals per day. Had a great time. Too bad relationship did not last. I have never seen so many beautiful women in thongs before. Anyway, a great place.
The visa requirement for US citizens visiting Ukraine was stopped in SAug 05. Have fun!
