I sent my second letter the other day through dating-ru and it cost me $25! $10 for the letter and $15 for translation. My question is, do I need to pay the extra price for the translation? I am sure the girl I am writing does not speak English very well let alone read or write English. Is the place where she gets my letter able to translate the letter for her without charging her or I for it?
No it's not able to do it for free. Nothng's for free in Russia. I've gone through the same trouble and I know it's costly. Dating-ru did good job in translations for me in the past. The pricing is outrageous (80% is profit and commisisions) I know they rip people off, but this is what everyone does. I doubt you'll find better pricing on the net anywhere else. I even tried translators independent of dating sites on the net, they charge $10 per page. $10 per page is the best price you can get. I am getting the same price from a translator in the area where I live (which is in the U.S. and makes you think how comes they charge you the same in Russia where rates shoudl be 1/10). When it becomes a big problem is with phone calls because they charge up to $5 per minute. I have a Russian couple friends of mine who live here and Marina helps me with the phone calls at no cost. You should ask the girl if she speaks English and if not you should ask if she has a friend who speaks English and could translate for her. I also have another firend who is from Poland, he speaks a little Russian, he's helped me also. It's a big hassle really. You need to emphasize to the girl that she needs to learn English, but don't pay for this unless you meet her and you feel comfortable. I did emphasize to the girl who doesn't speak English well that she needs to learn English fast before I see her and she understands now. Also, another thing to have in mind is that in Russia people who are not articulate are considered inferior, so Russians will avoid speaking a foreign language if they don't feel comfortable about their pronunciation or fluency because they feel they will sound stupid. That's what I found with this girl, apparently she is smart, she goes to one of the best universities and she knows some English, but she is scared to speak. I encouraged her big time and now she has started to throw out some words. It will take time, but it's a starting point. Most of them speak a little English and over time I think you can get to the point to communicate with each other without the help of a translator. But, make sure she understands that she needs to buy a book and learn words and phrases so you can communicate. At the end of the day, that's one way to find out how serious she is and if she is going to come to America she will have to speak the language. You shouldn't learn Russian unless you want to. I personally don't care about the language. Good luck!
Looks like a good advice from wtrav02. Ask if she has some friends that can make translations for her. May be she even will prefer to get letters in English so that she can start learning it( I know such cases).Anyway, using dating-ru.com translations is not the only way out, you can find other choices as well!
But sometimes(thats just from what I've seen while working in this agency)some girls are really suspicious about men who dont want to pay for translation . Many of them think, that if a man is trying to avoid paying for translations, he is:-being stingy, or too poor and cant afford it or he is not seriously interested in her.( I am not talking about each and every girl, that just happens a lot here)
That may look funny, but in Russia and Ukraine with average monthly salary about 150-200$ ( or even less)girls often think that 25$-100$ is nothing for a foreigner. This is just a lack of information on what life really costs abroad.
Most probably they get this atitude from their local agencies, where managers dont care about the customers who don't pay. So what girl is taught from the very first days after her info was placed on some site, is that "if he cares about you he will pay for everything. If not-then lets wait for somebody else who will write you".
Thats why if you are starting to write somebody who doesnt speak English, get ready to accept the fact that you will have to pay a lot for correspondence and phone calls translations. Or just look for somebody who knows the language well enough to communicate.
Thank you wtav02 and Olga for both your help. I just wanted to make sure that I was not spending money on something that I did not need to. This is my first time to write to someone from oversees and I can tell that I have a lot to learn. This forum is helping me a bunch. Another question about translation....The responses that I receive back are not the quality that I expected. I thought that for the money I was paying I would receive a more smooth translation. I understand that it will not be perfect but it seems very rough. Does an actual person do the translation or does some type of computer program do it?
Dustin, it depends ... I don't think dating-ru do the translations themselves. I believe they are using the girl's agency to do it. So, the consistency and quality may vary. Olga can tell you for sure. In my case the translations they did were good both from English to Russian and vice versa. I know it because I asked the girl. This girl that I have met through dating-ru speaks English well, but in the beginning I didn't know it, so I used to send her translated letters. After we met, I asked her about the quality ans she said it was very good. In her posting she had put English level below average. When I first talked to her on the phone, I was very surpised with how good her English was. In general, most girls will not admit they speak English well unless they speak perfect English. This is not lack of confidence. I guess it's cultural and the exact opposite of our culture where we claim we speak languages when we only speak a few words ...
The translation should be satisfactory to you for the money that you pay. I have been using one other agency for translations the last few months and they have been doing very good job also. I think if you are using a legitimate agency, they must be using a live person for the translations. If you are not satisfied, you should tell them by all means.
Dustin,
Dating-RU does do the translations themselves and they do a very good job.
It is a live person at Dating-Ru that does the translations.
Good luck!!
hi Dustin
yes we do all the translations ourselves, or, if we recieve girl's response in English, we forward it as it was. Dont make any corrections. So in your case we received the response from girl's agency and I guess it was their translation. And wtrav02 is right-If you are not satisfied, you should tell us by all means.
