When I did no one mentioned that it wasn't required. If your going soon I would still register just in case and see what they tell you there. It's not very expensive and only takes about 15 or 20 minutes. I only had to give them my passport with valid visa and they returned my documents the next day. If your uncomfortable being without your passport for a day then I'm sure you can go with them. jetmba. I heard mention that it was no longer neccessary to register, but sent my passport to the front desk for registration just in case. The manager was not aware of any change in the law and registered me as she always has. I generally receive my passport back within the hour. jetmba. The folks that rent me my apartment say it was no longer necessary. I was not asked for the registration at my exit from the country.
