I know that there is train service between Moscow and Yoshkar-Ola. Is there airline service as well? I can see a mid-size airport in sat photos just to the west of town but can find no schedule info online. If there is scheduled service, does anyone know if it is "safe & reliable"? That being a very relative state of flight service.
What are the trains like and are there major differences in 1st Class & 2nd Class? And what is the food service like?
Which do you recommend for travel between the 2 cities?
Never been to FSU before but I am planning a trip in late March.

Thanks guys for your info. It looks like I will most likely train it from Moscow. I want to see some of Russia anyway. 1st class seems to be the popular choice. I would have flown into Kazan but I don't necessarily see an advantage to it. The more complicated a trip the more room for FU. K.I.S.S.!!!
Mike, I have sent you an e-mail telling you more. You guys are in a better position than I to go out to your favorite restaurant. I have to get my food to go. ;O) Sounds like a great deal of fun.
I will be traveling to Yoshkar Ola in February, I am told it is 14 hours by train from Moscow, the distance is about 800 km. Even if the trip is somewhat shorter, it is still a long trip for sure. There are direct flights from Frankfurt to Kazan, that saves the hassle of changing airports in Moscow.
That sounds like a doable thing. I can get to Frankfurt from Atlanta and I think non-stop. I am quite familiar with the Frankfurt Flughoffen. That cuts out a lot of the crap involved in futzing with Moscow. I did want to do a little sightseeing but will chuck it for ease of travel. Thanks for the info. Can I rent a car in Kazan?
I am sure you can rent a car, am not sure if it is a good idea. I have been in Russia now 4 times, and usually in the city there are pretty good and inexpensive means of getting around. I don't know if Kazan has a Metro, I suspect not, but usually there are inexpensive buses and minibuses that they call "marshroute" which houl people around for about 10 rubles or less (30 cents). Driving there seems like an adventure that I am going to pass on, especially since I am not fluent in the language and familiar with their customs. Renting a car just seems like more of a hassle than it's worth it. If you are with a lady she will also know that they flag down cars by the side of the road, just like hitch hiking, and negotiate the ride, it's usually pretty reasonable, probably 100 or 200 roubles unless it's a really long distance. SO there are options besides renting. Good luck.

In point of fact, the authoritative spelling is Йошкар-Ола. There are many systems for mapping the Russian alphabet to Latin alphabets, and traditionally the first character of that city name (the letter is called 'i kratkaya') was substituted by Latin 'J'.
However, those systems have mostly been supplanted by new ones, which use 'Y', 'I', or a variant on 'I'. For example, this is true of modern Russian passports, which no longer use the 'J' substitution (unless someone makes a special request, to be consistent with old passports). It seems to me that today most Russians, when writing the name in Latin letters, would write Yoshkar-Ola.
In the old system, Andrei or Andrey would be Andrej, Sergei or Sergey would be Sergej, and the composer Tchaikovsky would be Chajkovskij.
What's most interesting about the city name, is that it is in Mari, a local language. It's not a Russian name at all.
Yes sokolova appear many time but it is not he, I have meet the parents and
