Christmas 25th is business as usual. Its not a holiday. The New Year/Christmas (1st of Jan) is more like a western chirstmas. The family comes together and after midnight go to a square and watch fireworks. If they are russian they may watch TV to listen to the russian presidents speech at 11pm (Midnight in Moscow). They (russians) will welcome in new years twice, once for Moscow and once for Moldova. Of course there are many shots of Vodka, but people probably don't drink as much as in the west. That was my experience at least.
Thanks Ben.I might be getting myself mixed up but i thought i read that in Moldova Christmas was on 1st Jan and New Years was celebrated around the 7th/8th Jan?
Hi Chaps!
Thanks for all your helpful comments.I will not be going this Christmas but am just carrying out some background info and find having it "from the horses mouth" is far better than any website travel spiel.I have only just joined this site so am a novice but have my eyes wide open. What was your trip like Ben when you were there? Was it worth it and is there places near Chisinau that i could also visit if things don't work out?
Thanks again for your help.
Sympatex
sympatex, I think Chisinau is the only city you should go to in moldova unless you know a lady in another citya and she has invited you. Outside Chisinau life is pretty basic and as a result you have to depend on your girl to do things for you. At least in the capital you can do things on your own like order food, drinks, arrange hotels/apartments etc and its more 'western' than the rest of the country. My trip was worth it. I had visited my wife 8 times before she came here so got to know the country pretty well.
Thanks Ben.
It sounds like you had a good time and are happy. Can i ask if you met her on this site by writing to her etc etc. and how does she like where she is now?
Nightmare, due to the fog, my flight to Paris tomorrow is cancelled so i am unable to get the connection to Moldova, will have to go another time, gonna tell my lady now.
actually i meet her in person when i was travelling. but i did find this forum useful in trying to under FSU women as sometimes they are hard to understand. she does like it here, but it helps having russian dvds and a laptop computer she can use. shes only just got here and its too early to say how she like it.
