Would like to know if anyone knows what it costs for internet service in the FSU.
I am in contact with a woman in Omsk that says her service costs her $ 100.00 dollars a month !!! This sounds waaaay to high even for the best internet service.
I am very new to the FSU scene but not stupid. She wants me to help pay for the service, so she can afford to correspond with me. I thought I would ask the experts here who would know what the actual cost of service is. Thanks for responding, Robert

That does sound expensive!
Have a look here -www.online-translator.com/url/tran_url.asp?lang=en&direction=re&template=Genera l&transliterate=&autotranslate=on&url=http://www.2com.ru/documents.html
Not sure if this covers Omsk
google is the best place to check most things out!
But there many an American will say that it a man's responsibilty to pay for the lady's correspondence.
What robertjay doesn't say if the USD100 is for communications or translation & communications. I understand an internet cafe is something like USD1 per hour.
The lady refers to a service, does she have her own computer, is she not already paying for her internet service, what precisely is 'service'?
The internet cafes are quite busy in Ukraine. I don't remember the exact charge, but Martin's estimate of 1 USD/hour seems in the ballpark. If she is only using the internet to correspond with you, it won't cost anywhere close to 100 USD. Most of the women on these services do not wish to exchange private emails. Instead, they prefer to use the marriage agencies, which are generally free to the women for correspondence, and paid for by men.
Thanks for the reply guys, Martin she has her own computer, says she does not speak english and her computer has a English to Russian - Russian to English translator software.
We have wrote E mails back and forth for about a month almost everyday. I told her that I would like to help her with the cost of internet service since we are corresponding so much.
She writes me back and thanks me and then tells me her service is a $100.00 a month. I want to believe she is not trying to scam me for money. She is 51 years old and just does not fit the scammer profiles I have read about. I had sent her flowers for New Years and paid Flamingo to have her photo taken when the flowers were delivered to make sure she was the real thing. She thanked me for the flowers but said the delivery person did not have a camera. Have not heard from Flamingo as of yet why photo was not taken. Just so you know I am 53 trs old and not looking for a women 20 or 30 yrs younger than me, so have been looking for a woman closer to my own age. Would love any input or direction you think would help in this situation. Thanks everyone Robert
Martin is right, it depends on whether the girl is using her own computer or goes to an internet cafe, and whether or not she pays a translator.
Moreover, some internet providers in the FSU charge their clients per minute for their sevices. Although it is the most expensive and inefficient way of using the internet, it is pretty common in the FSU. I used to have that but even then my monthly bills for the internet services did NOT exceed $50. And that was with all the emailing, instant messaging, browsing and downloading music.
Either way, it cannot be a STABLE $100 a month. Sounds like she's trying to trick you.
Hope my reply was of any help to you,
Masha
All good questions Martin. I will confirm the I-cafe is about USD 1 per hour.
As for the home computer in Ukraine they typically pay an installation fee so that they can have their computer connected to the Internet. Then they buy Internet pay as you go cards just like they do with their mobile phones. 100 USD is way over the top unless as Martin pointed out there is a translation service attached to her cost.
Bottom line is when a girl ask for money for any reason it is 99% scammer.
Yep,
Agree with Deano's bottom line, no self respecting lady should ever ask money from a guy who she has never met, I very much doubt that she is only writing to one guy thus how many other guys are also being asked to pay?
$100 a month sounds high but I often pay about $70 or $80 a month,
it normally cheaper to use a internet cafe than use it at home
high speed ( although its not that fast ) is charged by the meg bit, and can soon add up its about $1 for 25 megs here,
guess she must be writting a lot of letters !
I don't think the lady you are communicating with is a scammer. You should complain to Flamingo to get some money back. They make enough money from us as it is. I have placed 3 orders with them and always got a photo.
Good luck.
Internet in Russia is somewhat different than elsewhere as soon the phones will be as well. Currently the going rate for in home hi-speed where I live is 3.5 roubles per MB, no monthly plan like most places I know of. I spend about 5000 roubles a month on internet but I spend a lot of time on it, uploading & downlosding. The average person shouldn't be spending more than 2000 unless they are doing a lot of surfing. Every page you opens costs you money but if it is only print & no pics like this site it is fairly cheap.
The phones are the next big change coming in. As of February 1 we will have to pay by the minute for every phone call.
Nice way to fleece your customers & make it legal!!
Frankly, I think you made a mistake when you offered to pay for your lady's internet service. She now has learnt how to make some money. It's $100 from you, but then she may be asking another $100 to each man she is corresponding with and if it's so... we'll have another scammer on the scene.
robert,
I decided to find a woman of similar age, I chose a 40 year old and it did not stop her skimmimg me. So tread careful, the older these women get the wiser they get, if you follow me.
If she has her own PC then she should, and probably is, compiling and translating her letter(s) offline before a very minimal amount of time online to copy, paste and a click of the 'send' button.
Probably costs a few cents online per letter.
There is no 'model scammer', they come in all shapes and sizes, the pretty and the ugly, the young and the not so young.
So why should one guy be expected to pay for 24/7, he only asks for a few letters per week, why should one guy pay for all the other guys she is writing to also? :))
Robertjay,
I am new to this type of thing,as far as internet singles/marriage services go.I have been coresponding with a very real, sincere and wonderful lady. She has never once ever hinted in the slightest way about finances.I know she is not at all well off financially, but she is content and and hoping to find a good man.
I do agree with many of the comments previous to mine,to ask for a sum of cash(100USD is a lot of money to most people there)seems suspicious when this service offers I think a much better deal. For 49.95USD per month I e-mail nearly every day.If i want to say something personal to her,I have her postal address.Hope this is helpful!!.
