Hello gentlemen,
For me living in Sweden, and quiet close to the Former Soviet Union,
I wonder why the ladies are often referred to as "Russian" ?
As all of you hopefully know, Russia is just a small part of the part of the world that the site is about.
But in most cases I see the word "Russian Brides" whenthay actually mean
more than just Russia.
It would be like someone saying "Sweden" to me, when thay actually mean "Europe".
To Janne. Janne, I live in Estonia and I am not russian. These girls call themselves russian because the ARE russians, its just so easy! How many native estonians, latvians and lithuanians you find in these sites or native georgians, armenians, azeris. Expression Former Soviet Union is actually very insulting, its like former Danish colony Norway, or former Russian colony Finland, if you know what I mean!
Russians, ukrainians, moldovans are europeans too by the way. Kazah, usbeks and other Asians from "Former oviet Union" are asians.
But maybe SLAVIC BRIDES might be better?
(Russia forms somewhat more than your quoted 'small part' of the former Soviet Union.)
Not correct. Russia is a very small part of the Russian Federation, which of itself does form a large part of the FSU. It largely depends which part of the FSU people are from as to how they will refer to themselves. For example, the Eastern Ukrainians whom I know, tend to refer to themselves as Russian, where as some from other areas of Ukraine are quite nationalistic and are annoyed by that grouping. It depends largely on the old political loyalties or otherwise to Moscow.
As for non FSU people using the word Russian, it is, in my opinion, a result of perception based on language. If they can speak Russian, they are Russian so to say.
I think he was referring to the fact that Russia was only one of the 15 countries of the FSU.
Why do they call UK England? I'm still confused on the whole lot of United Kingdom. England and Scotland made up Great Britain. The United Kingdom is a make up that and includes Northern Ireland. The republic of Ireland isn't part of the United Kingdom. Though the United Kingdom and the Republic of Ireland are part of the EU, the Isle of Man isn't though it's a crown dependency. Almost need a score card to tell it all apart.
I/O,
where'd you learn geography, by the way? Just out of curiosity - where exactly do you think that Russia you are talking about is located within the Russian Federation? Or are you confusing the term the Russian Federation with the Former Soviet Union? Then again, Russia can hardly be considered a small part of that either. It's like saying: England is a very small part of the United Kingdom.
Lets forget this FSU business, its insulting and confusing and nobody dont use this expression oficially!
Its Ukraine, Moldova and Russia - they are independent countries where live different nationalities. Some of them are etnic russians! Most "russian brides" are etnic russians, where ever they live.
Russia very small part of Russian Federation !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! just curious, what are the other bigger parts?:)
Why CIS, nobody didnt mentioned that, isnt that too confusing to these folks here!
What I wanted to say, lets forget FSU, CIS (what dont really work, not as EU) and Russian Federatiom. And lets speak about russians in different cuntries. They are these russian brides! Lets be honest if somebody join russian brides agency, she is russian bride, isnt she!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Its certain quality isnt it? And if somebody in Sweden want to call agencies "Former Soviet Union brides agency"-its rediculous.
Is Estonia then Former Soviet Union now European Union country Estonia:):):):)
to add confusion to your insult, when next you make a list of the 'contents' of the UK do include Sealand will ya?
Mr Bates would love you for it, might even grant you a visit to see his servers ;-)
