Hi everyone, I've been reading these forums since November, but this is my first post. There has been some good advice and I'm hoping to get some specific advice in regards to accomodations in Nikolaev.
I'm travelling to Nikolaev in mid-April and I've been trying to decide whether an apartment or a hotel would suit me more. I'm leaning towards the apartments, as I would like to cook a few dishes for my lady.
Has anybody dealt with gotonikolaev.com or nikolaevapartmentsrent.com? I'll be in Odessa on April 18th, arriving from Vienna and I like the fact that both of these sites will send a driver to bring me to Nikolaev. Does anybody know if either of these sites are decent to deal with?
Any other information that anybody has on Ukraine or Nikolaev in general will be greatly appreciated, as I have not travelled to Ukraine before. I have been studying the culture and reading various forums, but I still wouldn't mind reading more. My personal email is nicholas_dussault@hotmail.com if you'd like to send more info and I do check this forum daily.
I have been to Nikolaev many times,

hi - i'll be in odessa a week later. is nikolaev a better place to be? i haven't booked any accommodation as yet so could go there if it's better?
also, does anyone know how far kharkov is from odessa and whether thats worth a trip?
AP,
Ever tried looking at a map? :) Odessa is very west in Ukraine and Kharkov is as far east as it is practically possible to get.
Odessa is a very cultural city and Nikolaev is a pleasant enough city also, as Ukraine goes I haven't got a bad word to say about either Odessa or Nikolaev.

Nikolaev is much quiter than Odessa, nice place but not so much to see and do there,
Odessa has much nicer bars and resturants , and also higer prices !
Kharkov is about 550 KM from Nikolaev and 680 KM from Odessa,
overnight train will get you there in around 12 hours and will cost you between £10 normal and $40 for Lux
Kharkov is a nice and big city plenty to see and do there too,
I have been to Nicolaev several times. It is a nice city although not anywhere near as much to do or see as Odessa. Do not go to the zoo. It will break your heart if you love animals. There is a nice street very close to the McDonalds with a few little restaurants. Be sure to take care of your bathroom business before 11PM as they shut the water off in the city until about 6 or 7 in the morning.
I sincerely hope you make out better than me. I spent much time and money with a young lady there who had a problem with her 9 year old daughter. She would have sex with me and go sleep with her daughter every night! Then her daughter decided that I was going to be a problem taking up her mother's time. Despite my best efforts to be nice to the daughter it did not work. I would say from my point of view avoid women with children. So my quest continues. I do not regret any of the time or money spent. It has opened my eyes to many things. Maybe I will beat the odds but it is a very tough endeavor. I have also been to Russia (Voronezh) and Latvia (Riga) recently.
AP,
You can fly from Odessa to Kiev and on to Kharkov very easily. Google the Aerosvit.com website for flight times and prices. I've done that circuit before. Odessa is the more interesting city, but Kharkov has gorgeous women who are not quite as exposed to westerners as the Odessa women are.
I was there for about 10 days in December. I had a flat arranged, but came to that city earlier than I had booked the flat for, so I had to stay in a hotel for the first couple of days.
The hotel was "Turist Hotel" (not to be mistaken for the Hotel Intourist of the Soviet era, which was an institution that existed in many cities-- though Nikolaev never had an Inturist Hotel.) The Kherson Turist hotel is a typical old soviet hotel. I'm used to it-- but many westerners would think of it as very sketchy! Here, I'll go get my receipt and check the price....
156 Grivna. So, about $31 per night. Um, it is NOT a place you could cook for your girl! Really, a simple bed, simple shower. "Hotel Turist, Bul. Karpenko 46"
By the way, if you do stay in a hotel, and you are American, save the receipt, and all flight (receipts, etc-- in case you find your girl and want to get married, these receipts come in handy during the K1 visa process.)
Then, after a couple nights, the flat that I had reserved became available, and I moved into total happiness.
McDonalds is a pretty major landmark. There is only one in Nikolaev, and it is dead-smack in the center. One of the streets bordering it is Sovietskaya. That is the main pedestrian street, in the center.
The flat I stayed at was the Blue Flat. I don’t know what it is called, but that’s how I think of it. I booked it through some guy in Kyiv, by sending one night deposit by western union. That, of course, is in insanely bad idea-- sending money to someone in Ukraine that you don’t know. I gave it about a 50/50 chance of working. But, I spoke with him on the phone before hand, and I took a shot. I again spoke with him by phone in Nikolaev, and he arranged the local representative of the flat to come out and meet me, and take me to the flat. She came, showed it to me, asked if it was ok-- and it was great!
Her name was Inna. Oh, and she was so beautiful. Such amazing eyes. I asked her out! I wish she didn’t have a boyfriend!!! Such great eyes.
Anyway, you can book that flat here-- the ‘blue flat!’ either with that guy in Kyiv-- or with the agency there: Kherson Girls. (The Nikolaev outlet of the ‘KhersonGirls’ agency.)
The person that owns/runs the Nikolaev office of Kherson Girls owns this blue flat. (The office is run out of an apartment.) By the way, if you need a plan ‘B’ while there, the same people renting you the flat can help you find a nice date. Inna helped me find some nice girls. Of course, I was most interested in Inna. Those eyes....
I know, it totally sounds like I get a commission if you take the flat. But, I was in Ukraine 45 days, and stayed at so many sketchy flats, and soviet hotels-- that this place was a little piece of heaven.
And, if you go there, and meet Inna with her amazingly beautiful eyes, tell her that Jonathan still thinks of her. See if she remembers me-- I asked her out, she said yes!!-----but then had to cancel. (Seeing as how she DID have a boyfriend-- I guess said ‘yes’ to the date request, but then came to her senses!) I was the guy with the rented car, the one that asked her to introduce me to a girl that she would want her brother to marry. (She doesn’t have a brother-- but she introduced me to nice girls that way)
(She doesn’t have a sister either. I tried. Oh, those pretty eyes.)
The blue flat. I think it is actually on Shevchenko street, very near where it intersects with Sovietskaya. Those two names, by the way, are pretty cool, if you are into things Soviet or Ukrainian. (I know the street names don’t really help you understand the location right now-- but it is a great location. You can walk to McDonalds-- as completely useless as that sounds, it can be a good thing. Everybody knows the McDonalds. It is where most of my dates started! Of course, we quickly walked to someplace more appropriate for the actual date!)
I initially booked the place with Gennady in Kiev, but he was kinda like a broker, not really affiliated with the flat. He speaks a little English, if you want to phone him:
