Most ... emphasis ... MOST .... of the inter-city trains in Ukraine are overnight trains which run once a day. It is NOT like commuter rail systems in major US and Western European cities. I would suspect, although I could be wrong, that it would be impossible to be based in a place like Odessa, and hop back and forth from Odessa to Kharkov, and then back to Odessa that night and be between the sheets in your Odessa apartment. jonny1973 Member send PM   block PM add to buddies Send: 3/5/2007 9:56:24 PM   really don't think you are doing it all wrong. You are getting started! Why not? As long as this trip isn't breaking your bank, then it sounds wonderful to me! Just, with the girls, go slow. No shopping. Nothing flashy. No expensive gifts. Any nice girl won't want these things anyway! Ok, but if you are flying into Odessa...and only have a few days....then Kharkov really should be saved for another trip. Kharkov is not at all near Odessa. I mean, you could get into Odessa, then overnight train to Kharkov....but, man. You will have so much overhead time with taxis, getting to and from the stations, checking in-and out of your flat, then travel time on the trains--- much will be wasted! If you are interested in a girl in Nikolaev, then I personally would stay in Nikolaev for your brief duration. I would fly into the Odessa airport (which is on the outskirts of town, in the direction of Nikolaev) and from the airport go to Nikolaev. If I only had 4/5 days, I would likely stay in Nikolaev for the whole visit. (Of course, you might choose to go to Odessa for a day-trip with a girl, to look around that city. The center is very European and can be glitzy. Fashion shops, café’s, restaurants.) Your girl will most likely be able to guide the two of you. A taxi would be ...I dunno...$100. But, you could take a mini-bus for about $2.00. And, it is kind of nice to see if she is OK with a minibus. I mean, on her own, she is-- she most likely takes one every day. But, it will be nice to see that she is fine taking the mini-bus with you instead of a $100 taxi.) Nikolaev is a pretty boring city. There is one McDonald's, right in the center. It serves as a convenient meeting place. After meeting your girl there, you can walk to one of several restaurants and cafe's nearby. But, you really should have a back-up plan. Let's say you arrive into the Odessa and have someone meet you at the airport and take you to Nikolaev. If you meet your girl, and you two see that it isn't destiny, then you should have a back up plan. There are two agencies in the center of Nikolaev-- and they are literally in the same building, on different floors. One is an AFA/Loveme.com affiliated agency, and another is an AnastasiaWeb affiliated agency. I hate the Anastasia website, but the agency is Ok. You go in, and you can look through profiles. They actually charge $15 to look at the profiles. If you find a couple girls you might like to meet, they will call them up and ask them if they can meet you. If the girls are free, they can come to meet you at the agency, and the agency will provide a translator for about $8.00 an hour. Plus, it is $15 for the introduction. The AFA agency in the same building doesn’t charge to look at the profiles, and I like them a little better. As far as what to do... Well, really, it seems to me that on the first meeting, you're likely to sit down for a coffee or a dinner and chat, visit, come to know one another! She is most likely going to have a translator (whom you will be paying.) The translators do this every day, and if you are at a loss of what cafe or restaurant to go to, she can help. You might choose to bring some photos of the things that are important to your life back home. If the conversation hits a lull, you could ask if she would like to see some photos, to get it moving. But really, most people can keep a conversation going for a first meeting! And then what? Well, it depends if there is that spark! If there is...um, there isn't that much to do in Nikolaev.... There are some tanks....a kind of park with tanks. Um..... there is a new bowling center.... I think there is also an ice-rink there now. If you have been corresponding with one special young woman in Nikolaev, maybe she would like to come meet you at the airport, and guide you into the city? But, if you have only exchanged a couple of letters, she might not be able to do that. Though, she might like to! Ok, so I mentioned two agencies that you could go to, as a backup, if the special girl you are going to see doesn't work out. I will pitch one more agency, with one caveat. If you go there, please tell Inna 'hi' for me, and tell her Jonathan still thinks of her. :D This other agency is the Nikolaev outlet of "Kherson Girls." It is run out of a home-office, a little bit from the center. Not too far. It is very small. I believe there is only the owner, and one young woman that provides introductions and can be your translator, if you want. Her name is Inna, and I wish she didn't have a boyfriend. She has SUCH BEAUTIFUL EYES. I asked her out! I got nowhere. I still think of her. :D As far as where to stay, I can recommend a great flat. I booked it through some booking agency in Kyiv, but you can book it directly. It is owned by the same woman that runs the agency I was talking about. That is how I met Inna-- she met me at the flat to give me the keys, and collect the rent. In the end, she introduced me to several girls (or ‘gurls’, the way she pronounces it-- it is so intoxicatingly beautiful when she speaks.) I think Odessa is a WONDERFUL to take a girl TO. For holiday, for fun. But-- that city is so damn easy to get to, that there have been a million guys going there for too long. There are beautiful girls there...but they are VERY used to western men, and you are one of many. As you get further away, it gets better. Nikolaev is better. (You could meet a wonderful woman in Odessa. But, to me they seem very much more sweet, genuine, and not tired from the marriage industry as you get further away from Kiev and Odessa.) I recommend staying in the flat offered by Kherson Girls (and meeting Inna, and telling her that Jonathan still thinks of her)-- and she can introduce you to many nice girls, if it doesn't work out with the girl you are corresponding with. We then promplty left, and walked to someplace appropriate for a date. It is a major landmark! I swear to god, it is the easiest place to meet in Nikolaev. It is dead center in the city, at the intersection of the two biggest streets. (Actually, it is this way with many McDonalds in Ukraine. They have THE choice locations: on Derbasovskaya in Odessa, on Karl Marx in Dnepropetrovsk, on Sovietskaya in Nikolaev, on the Maidan in Kyiv-- they snatched up the best locations, while the getting was good! When McDonalds first entered CCCP, you couldn't export the currency, and so they had nothing to do with it-- except buy real estate. McDonalds became one of the most imporant land owners in Moscow this way. Not just commercial outlets, but entire office buildings. An interesting note-- Kherson doesn't have a McDonalds-- becasase the mayor has kept them out! They don't want one there!) For the most part, the girls I met there were nice girls, interested in a relationship. It was appropriate to come to know them through coffee at a cafe, dinner at a restaurant, going bowling, going to their home and meeting their parents. I didn't meet party girls. However, that may be because I was looking for a nice girl that was looking for a relationship! I would be 100% honest with Inna, or whatever agency you were working with, and tell them what kind of girl you might like to meet. I asked Inna to introduce me to a girl that she would want to have her brother marry. So, those are the kind of girls I met. There were girls that Inna steered me away from saying that 'She might be good for just fun, but not for marriage.' I am NOT making that up. If I had told her I want to have fun for two weeks, I think she would have introduced me to more party girls. So, for the girls I met in Nikolaev, the bars were not the places. In fact, there aren’t that many bars there. Odessa, on the other hand, does have a much flashier scene. More bars, clubs, and it can be a glorious eurotrash wasteland. Nikolaev has one bar/club that might be a little like that-- but it is a small town. (This club is right across from-- can you guess it?-- McDonalds. I am not kidding.) Then there is a restaurant that has a strip club on the top floor. It is not particularly unusual for in Ukraine for a restaurant to turn into a bar scene in the evenings, and it is not unusual for bars to have pole dancers. So, this place, Dixie BarBQue, has a strip club on the top floor, and a pole on the main floor. After about 10:00, the pole on the main floor has a girl on it. So, this might be a place for that. But, I wouldn’t expect that much-- or to meet any hot girls that want to hook up with you. They are in no way easily amazed by western guys, if the guy seems like he isn’t something special. If he wants to dump money on them and spoil them, maybe. Anyway, this restaurant/bar/strip club is right in the center of town-- directly across from.....McDonalds. Again, not joking. One club is across the street from McDonalds one direction, DixieBBQ is across the street the other direction. It is not my impression that Nikolaev is a go-to-a-bar kind of city. I think it is more small-town, more sincere. Not a party city. Fewer party-girl types. It is my impression that the girls are more cafe, park, restaurant, come to know you type of girls. But Odessa will have more flash party girls. Not pubs-- but upscale bars. Like in New York City, but a drink is $5 instead of $20 in NYC. I think if you want party girls, Odessa might be better. The girl at the marriage agency in Kherson that I worked with said that many people go to Odessa to have fun, and come to Kherson to find a wife. To get in contact with Inna, and reserve the flat, you could contact Kherson Girls. The agency in Nikolaev is run by a woman named Zoya. Inna (oh...Inna) works for Zoya. http://www.khersongirls.com/apartments/nikolaev.htm I stayed in the blue flat, and it is a piece of heaven, compared to almost every place else I stayed in Ukraine. FWIW, I like to go into Ukraine via Odessa also as the airport is small and quick to get through. You won't be mobbed by the enterprising taxi drivers so much as you will in Kiev, although there is still a few there. It is sort of much more low key and a bit simpler for a first up visit. I very much favour seeking her advice on apartments. If she is serious and genuine, bet your boots she will dig up the best value around. Russian/Ukrainian women are excellent negotiaters. If she starts to pitch you vague stories and prices, then pitch her pretty fast because she would be jerking you. Odessa is a beaut spot IMHO, not the speed of Kiev, but very easy for a freshman and there is plenty to see and do. If she/s are in any ways decent, they won't be too keen on getting smashed in a bar. They can find plenty of local men to do that with. Yep, sad reality is you are gunna have to do all those "Nice" things when you meet, but the sadder truth is, if you want to keep her, you are going to be doing that for the rest of your life. I am inclind to think that if you favour one, she probably wouldn't mind meeting you at the airport in Odessa. I'd forget about the eastern cities if you only have a few days. You'll just spend all your time travelling. Airport meetings might not be so much fun, but it does solve a lot of those "What standard of cafe' to meet at" questions. Wherever you meet FFS, don't suggest Micky's unless she does. FWIW, I'd be inclind to zone in on one woman for a short trip like this and get some contact going with an agent as a back up. I just can't quite see how you can get much of a handle on several girls in a short time like this. It does take a bit of time to get to know someone with different language and culture and habits. Just one important clue. You are there to learn about HER and HER country. If and when she wants to know about yours, SHE will ask. Nothing more insulting for a Russian/Ukrainian than a westerner rocking in wanting to tell everything about his own country. "The" above gave us two feet to walk with, two hands to touch with, two eyes to look with, two ears to listen with, BUT only ONE mouth to speak with. Go figure.:-) I think you hear me.
