Hello, folks. I am new to this forum. Anyhow, I have a few questions. Firstly, I should give a little background both about myself and what I plan on doing. I am an American man in his late 20's who has seen firsthand that marriage in America is not such a good idea for several reasons-- most American women do not make good wives for many reasons, and even if you find a good girl and the marriage seems to be going well, heaven forbid if things turn sour as she can literally ruin a man's live with the the way the "fair and just" family courts are set up. I DO want marriage and a family, but I absolutely will NOT do it in America. I am uncomfortable with living the "player" life as that is not what I want. This leaves me with one option-- expatriate with the intent to relocate permanently. As to how I plan to support myself and possible future family, I currently supplement my income as a freelance sound designer and can take that job anywhere in the world that has decent internet access. Also, as a native speaker of the English language, I could obtain SIT TESOL certification and teach English from time to time as well. Those two jobs combined mean that we would not need to worry about having our needs provided for as the cost of living can be very, very reasonable in the FSU on an income of $1000 - $1500/mo. I do not need to be rich, just comfortable and would like to find someone that thinks the same way. Amidst all the horror stories, I do believe that there are very decent women in the FSU who can be found if we are not looking in all the wrong places ;).
In a nutshell, I would like to marry the girl in HER country and stay there, learning the language and integrating myself into that country's culture, customs and social norms. She would not have to worry about moving to a foreign land and being apart from her family and friends as I would have already done that for her lol.
On to the questions. I see that some of the posters here are women from the FSU and I would like their opinions on this. How would a person thinking and living like the above description fare in finding a future soulmate? Would most girls there have misgivings or suspicious about dating/marrying a man who left America, given the Hollywood image of American life so many hold to over there? What are the common views among Russians/Ukrainians/etc of foreigners who live in the FSU permanently? Any other thoughts and/or opinions would be very much appreciated. Thank you.
you just come to UA, organize your life and business. And live. The rest will come, bcs being here and stay without nice woman is impossible.
You'll have a good family orintated wife, but I have mention that the prices here are coming close to european, that's why think good if 1000-1500$ a month will be enough for family.
Sure, you wife probably will work, but what about kinds? Do you imagine how much cost to grow them?
Where will you live? You wanna buy a house or appartament, ot rent it.... if take Kieve, the prices for apartments start from 100000 $ for a small 30-40 sq.m. staff (not in center sure).
In other cities for the same price you can buy a bit bigger apprtmt ot house.
Will you be able to have a car and family and house for 1500$ a month?

But financies sure are not an isuue. There are women for EVERY SINGLE TASTE here. NO PROB AT ALL.
I think it’s not a bad idea as long as you can get the work. But it would be important to have some decent savings too to fall back on, as it may take some time for you to get setup. For example an apartment will cost you about $1000 for a month if you arrange something online. Which you would probably have too, as if you got a cheap apartment and want to setup a phone or internet connection it may not be quick and easy. It would be a good idea to know someone over there first.
I doubt many girls would have misgivings or suspicious that you left America (you can always go back). However I think the maximum amount of time you can spend in the country is 3 months without a special visa I think (I maybe wrong). Getting a residence visa is not easy. Therefore you have to leave and come back (which maybe a few hours drive to cross a boarder). I'm not sure if you’re limited to staying there a maximum of 6 months in a 12 month period or something like that? One way is to get a business visa. Either way this will eat into your $1500 quickly. While the cost of living is lower, you would be surprised how quickly you can spend money. I think you should go there first for a month and see if you like it FIRST. However finances aside it is a great idea and you would have a great time I’m sure. You only live once so go for it.
I should note that I plan to live in one of the smaller cities as they have several advantages according to my personal tastes over the larger metropolitan areas. I have lived in Detroit, USA for a short time and found out the hard way that I do not like life in the big cities as I prefer a quiter, simpler and slower life. It just so happens that a modest income will go much farther in a small city than in Kiev.
I spent some time in the middle east when I was younger. I suggest that before you even contemplate expatriating that you learn to speak the language. As a non-native speaker you will have a much harder time of things. You will pay substantially higher prices for everything, and while you will probably make friends easily (assuming you're not an "ugly" American :) ) you'll have a harder time gaining the kind of trust you'll need to really assimilate. For starters every government form you fill out will likely be in Russian, so you'll need to spring for translators all the time, and of course you'll always be pegged as a "rich American" ripe for the picking, whether you are or not.
Take a year or so and get into some Russian language classes. You'll not only learn the language well enough to get yourself started, but you'll also learn a lot about Russians while doing it. Then when you finally make the move, your "fellow" Russians will be impressed and you'll fit in much easier.
I agree 100% with what Ulmo just said. You will be so open to be taken advantage of, that your language barrier will prevent you from protecting yourself if you go before you learn the language.
Besides, it will give you some extra time to save that extra money. In this day and age, money can protect you, but once you break that language barrier its gonna be your best and first line of defense.
And English-teachers don't make any money there, so try to figure out some other way to support yourself.
yes, these ex-Soviet women will be surprized to see american moving to Ukraine.
and, yes, they will think something wrong with you.they dont understand our problems.
