i have been corresponding with a lady and i wanted to see where she lived overseas on google earth. the city was nikolaev in ukraine. i found a "town" to the east in russia, but nothing in the ukraine. has anyone else done this before taking the plunge and getting on a plane to go visit?
i downloaded the map on her bio and its not even close!
You'll find that locations outside the U.S. are hit and miss with Google Earth. Many places, especially the FSU, have limited cartographic information available. I wouldn't depend too heavily on Google Maps for Ukraine.
There is definately a city of about 500 thousand called Nikolaev in Ukraine, but I believe on google earth you will find it with the spelling Mykolaiv. It is located east of Odessa, on the black sea. I was there in April, going back in September. Great place. Do a search in the forum for Nikolaev and you will find lots more info. Lot of people here have been there.
Nikolayev, N46°57, E032°01
It was there, when I drove through it late at night.
Such a laugh finding a hotel.
Does anybody know how HOTEL is spelled in cyrillic?
I think there is also a very tiny city called Nikolaev in the western part of Ukraine too (not just the big one near Odessa) speaking of the western part of Ukraine has anyone every travelled to it? Some of it has the trailing end of Romania's Carpathian forests and mountains and is supposed to look a lot different than the flat steppes of the rest of Ukraine. (I love geography;-) ) I don't know it might be beautiful to see, and you don't hear about men meeting women from the city of Lviv much.
When Google gets around to including my hometown of Green Bay, Wisconsin in its map series, then I will start looking to it to show me Ukraine.
I have a great satelite map of Kiev - its printed on HUGE paper stock and you can easily see all of the individual buildings in the city. I ordered it over ebay. Its great.
