Does anybody have any advice on mailing a laptop to russia? From my searches on google i've read that the customs rules in large cities like st pete and moscow are a little more lenient as to the pricetag of the package but I am mailing to novosibirsk. I know, I know, it is probably easier to send her money and have her buy it in russia but my girl is not so tech savvy (not to mention that I am going to set it up for her with all the ms programs she needs for her job/school and a crap load of mp3s/vids) and I have already bought a decent laptop at a great price. My girl speaks english very well so it is not a problem that the software is in english and I figure to drop at least 200 to ship it. But I don't want it to denied in customs nor have her to pay a duty on it. Some of the "tricks" i've come across include claiming the package value is zero, claiming the laptop is defective or "spare parts" or "broken computer chassis" and leaving the value under $100. I've also read that there may be courier services from the U.S. to russia that have a way to get by customs and hand delivering the package or mailing it once in russia or through an agency, shipping to their office in a nearby country (like finland) and they will transport across the border and mail trough russian mail or dhl/fedex.
I just want to know if anybody out there has mailed any big ticket items, especially computers or electronics and can tell me their stories, good and bad. oh and i will be mailing from the los angeles area in case anybody knows of any good russian courier services in the area. any help will be much appreciated.
they will give her hard time at the custom. if it is used notebook and has no value for you, ship it. use USPS express mail.
price it below $300. Put description in the custom form: GIFT, used notebook. see what will happen. she may need to go to custom, stay in the long line, and try to prove that it is used. if she knows how to handle herself with officials, she will get any problem resolved and will pay small fee.
But, if you want to send new notebook. do not do it. use http://www.russianservice.com section Electronics/notebook. Place custom order there. They will delivery notebook from a local supplier with warranty and no problems with custom.
