May be visiting there soon. Don't know much about city. Has anyone stayed there before and can recommend
a place or site? What is good part of city, maybe near downtown, walking distance to shopping and restaurants? It is always a little scary to go somewhere unfamiliar. Thanks!!
Beemer, stay in the downtown area. its a very nice city and pretty small. The main thing to look out for is british stag parties which lower the tone of the place! They get lots of tourists now its in the EU. Not sure about accomodation but you get apartments. Just google riga apartments.
Been there last year and stayed in a backpackers right next to the river in downtown. I will try and get the name of it for you - It was cheap and not too crappy - owned by a Aussie chap. The one club that I have been to is the biggest in the southern hemisphere - awesome with something like 10 bars on four levels. Will get back to you.
beemer:
Jet is the person you need to speak to......jump in here if your watching Jet,he can certainly advise you of some of the pitfalls you might encounter in Riga.
Hey Glad...how goes it!!
Doesn't seem to be a popular destination for guys, maybe to westernized???? more now than before??
Jet is on his VIP mission still...I think.....maybe he doesn't want to relive Riga experience(headache). :))))
Was hoping there was more recent experiences!!!
I looked back in archives about a thread about 'Robbed in Riga'....kind of interesting reading posts of guys still
participating in this forum, got a kick from reading post from QuietCharm. Guess it is pertinent to say...'Those were the days.....when.. HAHA
Beemer,
Have been to Riga twice recently, make sure that you stay in 'Old Town', it is buzzing and anything you want is within walking distance, www.booking.com is good for a choice of hotels.
beemer18, its very popular now as its part of the EU there are lots of cheap flights to Riga from all over Europe. It would be possible to get a return from london for about $100. Backpackers is the cheapest accomodation you can get. You share a room with other people, you have a bed and communal bathroom. I don't think its what your looking for! Riga is nice and the streets were full of beautiful girls, not to mention the bars!. But the city is overrun with stag parties from the UK and I'm sure the girls aren't impressed by them.
Ratkas, I'm sure it wasn't the biggest in the southern hemisphere given its in the northern hemisphere!
In summer you can go to a club at 11pm and its light outside and leave at 4am and its light outside. I'd say its pretty safe.
Ben.....I am coming from states, west coast. I usually fly into Kiev, then decide what country to visit close to time I am there. Did you stay in old town...near river??
beemer yes i staying in the old town. The whole centre is pretty small, you can easily walk around all of it.
If i was you i would look at flying with some of the low cost airlines once in the EU like ryan air, easyjet or air berlin. A one way from london in Oct/Nov to riga could cost you as little as $30 including taxes. I would think it would be easy to get a cheap flight to a major EU airport. Maybe its more hassel but worth considering.
Don't forget to check out the Lido. You can easily get there using the trolley car system. Great food and generally an interesting place. Also St Peters Cathedral is nice along with all of old town.
A quite beautiful city. Cannot say the same for Liepaja or Jurmala.
Best Wishes
Izi
And now I think I will bale on this place while Nasfan froths at the mouth for a while.
Evening All
I was in Ukraine when this post was active - but I would be glad to comment now.
Old Town is not quite as safe as you might think, as I dicovered in 2004. Then (as perhaps now) you will find many patrol cars parked around the area at 2:00, giving the suggestion that the place is well watched over. Those patrol cars will generally have officers asleep in the back seat - rather than paying any atention to what is going on.
Here is an excerpt from a post I wrote to this very forum shortly after I got MUGGED in Latvia.
"Latest news from Latvia: I got mugged.
One night I went to "Old Town" a normally well patrolled section - the oldest in Riga. The streets are narrow the building some of the original in Riga. There are some nightclubs - one of which I went to alone. I had a little to drink - which seemed to affect me more than usual.
I followed a "taxi driver" who said that he would take me home. I was led down a narrow dark alley - where I NEVER would have gone had I not been feeling very strange. He struck me in the back of the head with his fist and many other places - I tripped on the curb and he began kicking my face.
Knowing I was in a bad predicament I offered my money, but not my documents, by opening my wallet. He tried to take the wallet we struggeled and it ripped in half. Fortuantely - all but my license and one credit card remained in my half.
I am bruised in several places, embarrassed that I could be duped into following this guy into a dark alley and $160 poorer (no big deal) but otherwise okay. My lip is swollen but my teeth are intact.
Others have told me that in such circumstances other victims have not been so lucky. In contrast to other Eastern Eurpoean countries the police were very cooperative and helpful - but of course nothing was recovered and no one was caught. "
The rest of the ordeal can be found in the rather long thread "What do you know about Latvia" which is buried in our archives. I will make it current for your reference.
hope I'm not too late with my reply.
i stayed in the latvia hotel cos i like my comforts and I'm not into hostels etc. but you can certainly find cheaper hotels in riga.
i never had any problems there and found the people to be friendly although there are normal dangers there just like everywhere.
places to see include the remains of a german concentration camp although this might not be for everyone.
you can visit amber museum and take a day trip to Jurmala, its a coastal resort and its not far from riga.
Beemer18,
I have been to Riga several times so know the place pretty well. I always enter Ukraine via Riga and have a night or 2 there as part of the trip. Depends how much you are looking at paying a night. Apartments always a good bet, also best value hotel I have found to be Radi un Draugi in old town at £39 for a single with breakfast, very well located. Hostels are good cheap value too, not sure if you are a hostel person though. As you arrive at airport, you can get a taxi to old town for about £10 or a bus for 30pence. Walk across car park straight outside of exit and the bust stop is staring at you. When in airport grab a free map before you go. Get off other side of the main river. I never use taxis there.
It is a very safe city if you stay in old town area. Easy, relaxed place to have a wonder around, lots of decent restaurants. Do not go venturing too far into the outskirts as I know of some good stories including guns!!
