UK Intercepts Russian Bombers
Updated: 12:57, Thursday September 06, 2007
RAF Tornados intercepted eight Russian bombers as they approached UK airspace.
The Bear Tu95 planes - which can carry nuclear and Cruise missiles - were detected by Nato early this morning.
British fighters were scrambled from RAF Leeming in Yorkshire and the Russian planes diverted before entering British territory.
They headed back to their base in north Russia without incident and are still thought to be in the air, with Nato tracking their progress.
Politics:
They assassinated one of their guys in London, contaminating 3 British Airways aircraft in the process, we issued an arrest warrant for the prime suspect, they refused, we expelled 4 of their diplomats, they expelled 4 of ours and so it goes on.
At least they still have some long range bombers, all the UK has left in the way of long range bombers are Nimrods and a privately owned, but airworthy, Vulcan.
Didn't actually fly into UK airspace. The eight bombers did u-turns when intercepted by the Tornados.
Rich with oil and natural gas money, Russia is reasserting itself on the world scene. Russian people are very proud of their country, their culture and their heritage. Many are still sore that the whole world seems to think that Russia fell. Perhaps the comminist experiment that was the USSR fell - what makes Russia, Russia never did.
Russia will assert itself frquently in the years to come, because it has a lot of pride. And it wants the world to know its still there.
They were not in UK air space, but close to it, even so, it's a shame we didn't shoot em down, depleting there ageing fleet even further, Putin has delusions of grandeur, he thinks militerily, russia has teeth, not any more, Putin, your boys lost, now get over it.
I don't think anybody actually thought the Russians intended to haphazardly bomb Britain. I suspect that that might have caused a slightly more major international incident.
Its a matter of intimidation and presence.
The cold war was only about communism vs capitalism AT FIRST. Then it became a clash of cultures and and pride of nationalism.
Russia feels it has something to prove. The economic system it embraced may have been inferior - but Russia wasn't. And they want the world o know that they are as much a presence as they ever were.
Russia is spending a LOT on its military again - and it can afford it. Read the international news - Russia is getting a brand new set of teeth. And they are very pointy and sharp.
Defence spending is consistently increasing by at least a minimum of one-third year on year, leading to overall defence expenditure almost quadrupling over the past six years, and according to Finance Minister Alexei Kudrin, this rate is to be sustained through 2010.[10] Official government military spending for 2007 was $32.4 billion, though various sources, have estimated Russia’s military expenditures to be considerably higher than the reported amount.[11][12] Estimating Russian military expenditure is beset with difficulty; the annual IISS Military Balance has underscored the problem numerous times within its section on Russia.[13]. The IISS Military Balance comments - 'By simple observation..[the military budget] would appear to be lower than is suggested by the size of the armed forces or the structure of the military-industrial complex, and thus neither of the figures is particularly useful for comparative analysis'.[14] By some estimates, overall Russian defence expenditure is now at the second highest in the world after the USA.[15]
About 70% of the former Soviet Union's defense industries are located in the Russian Federation.[16] A large number of state-owned defense enterprises are on the brink of collapse as a result of cuts in weapon orders and insufficient funding to shift to production of civilian goods, while at the same time trying to meet payrolls.[citation needed] Many defence firms have been privatized; some have developed significant partnerships with firms in other countries.[citation needed]
The recent steps towards modernisation of the Armed Forces has been made possible by Russia's spectacular economic resurgence based on oil and gas revenues as well a strengthening of its own domestic market. Currently, the military is in the middle of a major equipment upgrade, with the government in the process of spending about $200 billion (what equals to about $400 billion in PPP dollars) on development and production of military equipment between 2006-2015.[17]
Russia is the world's top supplier of weapons, a spot it has held since 2001, accounting for around 30% of worldwide weapons sales.[18][19] Russia is the principal weapons supplier of China and India, and provides weapons to Iran, Algeria, Venezuella and other countries. Recent arms deals seem to show that Russia is building on its former influence, both in the Middle East and in Latin America.[20]
A couple of months ago the Commander of the Russian Air Force (RFAF) Vladimir Mikhailov mentioned that the development of the Russian strategic aviation will not be focused just on further upgrade of the Tu-160, today’s world best strategic bomber. It was the first time when an official of such level mentioned principally new aircraft. This week this information was publicly confirmed by the Deputy Commander of the 37th Air Army major-general Anatoly Zhiharev, who also gave some details of the project. According to him the designers received technical specifications from the Air Force necessary to implement. R&D on the new aircraft has been already included in the federal budget. The militaries claim that the new aviation complex will be totally different from the existing planes and surpass the characteristics of the foreign analogies. It will be able to take off from different types of runways, including unpaved and short, to penetrate through any systems of air defense, to fulfill mission on any battlefields (over land and sea), in any weather and climatic conditions. It will carry conventional and high precision weapons (missiles and bombs). Unlike the Commander of the RFAF, who earlier said that the new aircraft will hardly appear in the next ten years, Zhiharev speaks about ten years as a usual time between the begging of the R&D and appearance of the new aircraft.
However, in the foreseeable future Tu-160 will be able to fulfill all missions of the strategic aviation. At least in the next ten years even older Ňu-95ĚŃ and Ňu-22Ě3 “will have no noticeable disadvantages”. All have a perfect platform for upgrade. Combat opportunities of the upgraded aircraft increased drastically. During last experimental bombing the deviation of the bomb dropped from Tu-22M3 did not exceed one meter. Such accuracy can be regarded as high precision arms. According to the official estimation of the Russian Air Force representative existing planes can stay on duty another 20 years, even 50. First of all it concerns Tu-160.
I found a source that confirmed Martins claim that there is a single Vulcan, held by a private company - that is (was?) in the process of being made airworthy.
There are also 19 Vulcans at various parks and memorials on display in the UK. Better go and start collecting them!
yes jetmba it is revealing what you can copy and paste on to this forum when you do a google search for the term "russia politics" and "russia defence"
But this is good news to the British government because now they have another boogey man to go along with Islamic terrorists living in caves with which to frighten their citizenry into accepting more controls over them.
Not sure what you are trying to say - but OF COURSE I cut and pasted what I posted above. That should be clear as the style clearly isn't mine (and all of the words are spelled right - that's a dead give-away that I didn't write it!). Notice the reference numbers in parenthesis in the top post? I don't typically do that either when I write.
I DID Google to get the information - but I didn't use the specific search terms you mention.
Damn, bored, I'm good, but not THAT good - that I could write this stuff off the top of my head!
jetmba,
Try moving the Vulcan in Blackpool, for instance, and it may fall apart in your hands, it was sold on ebay a couple of years back before the buyer realised that it couldn't be moved.
There are 2 Vulcans in taxying condition at Southend and Wellesbourne Mountford, the only airworthy Vulcan being at Bruntingthorpe but hey, the RAF still operate a Lancaster bomber so let's put that into active service.
As someone joked today, 8 Bears in formation would be 64 of the noisiest propellors in formation and one Bear makes one hell of a racket, never mind eight, thus might they do air displays by request? :)
This 'talk' of bombs bores me........it purpose was to make news and have people like ones in this forum talk about it
pure and simple. This is like Billy walking around with his six-shooter in hand, ready to fire, only everybody knows its only a pop gun!!!!!!!!!!!
Jet....are you going to turn into our resident Cliff Clavin, if so I'll call you Cliffy!!!!!!
