For varuious reasons I can't get out to Chisnau 'till the end of Nov and I want to surprise my girl by getting her a PC (her son just started senior school and she is doing exams) and having it delivered. Anyone know any reputable outlets who could build and deliver?
Olga, that's the question that still mystifies me. Why guys think they have to bring expensive gifts to a girl they meet for the first time. Maybe he has met her, we don't know. It still amazes me that guys think to meet a decent lady in the FSU you have to lavish them with incredible presents, when most just really want honest attention from a good man.
Money and gifts can't buy love but some will ask for them before you meet them!
Buying a p.c for a FSU woman is very unwise, if you have never meet her or know her.
Take her to dinner and pay for it, put on the male charm and chivalry, they like doors being opened for them, there coats taken off and chairs pulled out to sit in..just make sure you pull the chair out a little too far, so it falls on its ass!
Its a good idea (assuming he has meet her). With a PC and internet he can then talk to her for 'free'. Its not cheap to call moldova. I know I could have brought 10 PCs with the amount I've spent on phone calls. Sure she could use it to talk with other guys but maybe he trusts her.
The exact same laptop I paid less than $500 for (after rebates) was around $1,300 in Moldova the last time I was there.
" know I could have brought 10 PCs ....."
What method are you using to call?
At less than 10 cents a minute to Moldova (what I paid) - I'd have to talk 130,000 minutes to equal the price of ten PCs.
If I was giving a woman a PC - first of all I would have to know her pretty well - more than even a casual meeting - and I would bring one WITH ME - which would be a lot more memorable, not to mention less expensive, than simple sending her one.
jetmba, I travel a lot. When i have internet access i pay around 10cents a minute. Two years ago it was about $2 a minute to call on a mobile (now its a lot less but still high) and double that when your overseas!. I was calling each day for around 10 min each time. Calling cards were poor quality and just not worth the hassel and I didn't know about Skype and I wasn't concerned about the cost as I missed my girl. And in the back of my mind these calls were proof of an relationship, which is something that was needed when applying for her visa.
If I was Vee4ouR I'd buy her a laptop not a PC that way she could take it with her and also because I could buy one myself and take to with me to give to her, like Jetmba suggests. Although it wouldn't have a Russian keyboard or OS (however you can change OS and buy russian stickers to put over the keyboard on ebay for a few dollars).
I have stickers for Russian characters (purchased on ebay) on ALL my PCs. They are quite durable. And its easy to add Russian characters to operating system.
How many PC's do you need Jetmba?
Sure you can change the characters to use russian but the OS is not russian so all menus etc are in english unless the software support multilanguage but its not a big deal.
If you think she is worthy of a computer, a budget Compaq presario lap top is very good with 15.4" crystal brite widescreen, 80 gig hard drive, 512 mb ram with inbuilt 56k dial up modem, Wi Fi, combo cd burner/dvd player running Windows Vista Home Basic which comes preinstalled ready to go out of the box.
I picked one of those up for myself for around $795 in Australia, a couple of months a go.
Its a current older compaq model, it runs Windows XP very well and runs Vista.
Bit slow on booting because of Vistas security and greedy memory demands and I will have to stick in another 512mb ddr2 ram module to bring it up to 1 gig ram to improve its performance and I found a new module on the net, wholesale for $79 and just ordered that!
The screen on its very good for an LCD in a laptop and on batteries you will get at least 2.5 hours out of it before it goes flat but it does come with a universal 120 to 240 volt AC mains power adaptor, just make sure you get the Euro power point adaptor plug so she can plug it in over there and when you bring it through customs over there say its for your own personal use, your own laptop and not a gift for her otherwise you will be hit with import tax on it over there! Don't carry it through customs in a new box, put it in a leather carry case beforehand, like its your business lap top, then they will buy it, that its yours.
"Two years ago it was about $2 a minute to call on a mobile (now its a lot less but still high) and double that when your overseas!. "
For about there of the last four years I had been using calling card to call my lady in Moldova (now I am using a different system suggested by some on this site). I was able to call her on her land line for under 10 cents per minute. Calling her on her mobile costed me around 11 cents a minute. And the quality was generally not bad at all.
The advantage that you are looking at, using mobile internet access, is going to benefit ONLY those who DO travel quite a bit. If you have access to a good-old land line in the US there are and always have been (in the last half decade anyway) very cheap alternatives.
But if she has internet access (ie a PC and internet connection paid for) then the cost is free if you use something like Skype. My point was that looking back now I wish I did buy her a laptop and internet connection as the money I spent at the time could have gone futher (ie got her a PC) and in Vee4ouR's case hes also thinking about her sons education which could be a good term on investment!
Yes if your paying 10c or less and your always at home then it certainly makes sense to use your method.
God save us from the bloody cynics and thank you Ben for reading my full post and getting the idea.
I don't want to arse about with OS and Stickers, especially OS as if you paid for it you could have bought 3 PCs and I doubt I'll find Russian language Vista on a BitTorrent site
I live in Europe too, entry level laptop is about £450 ($1000) dollars here so no surprises there, the obsession with getting a cheap date does no one any credit, likewise the paranoia and assumption that "2 letters exchanged equals big pay day for Moldovan scammer" is bordering on insulting; I'm a big boy now and can spot a con a mile away but thanks for assuming I'm a total halfwit
I "lavished" far more expensive "gifts" on my ex wife for no good reason, at least there is a practical purpose to this one
And just for the record I don't actually give a **** if it works out between us in the long run, her son still needs the best chance for an education and she is a lovely and genuine person, why shouldn't she have what we all take for granted?
Hi, In Chisinau there is in every street at least 2 internet clubs where you can be for 1$ at least 4 hours.
Yes no problem to buy one present. Please be carefull, ask some questions at a belgian guy who lives there and went through everything: find him under www.chisinau-moldova.com
