Does anyone know of any wireless internet service that might be available in Ukraine? I intened to be traveling around a bit and its fairly hard to find Wifi service with any dependability anyway.
I know that MTS (Ukraine) has recently introduced a broadband wireless intenet service and that a press release issued by the company said it hoped most major cities would be covered by the end of 2007 - but I'll be darned if I understand how I might connect with it.
Can anyone tell me if a CARD would be available for my notebook, and what the subscription rate would be? Or would it be best to go with an "all in one" mobile phone that could connect to the internet (maybe with a qwerty keyboard?).
I am completely lost in this area and any helpful suggestions would be appreciated.
There are lots of cafes that provide free wireless. There are a number of cards to buy to get dialup services. My Nokia allows connection via my mobile thru GSM or 3G. Take your pick!
Not crazy about the internet cafes. She doesn't feel comfortable in them so every few days is the best I can get. And I like to use the internet everyday.
The dial-up service thing doesn't help me much since there are no phone books - and I can't read the papers to find available services, cost etc. Besides, we will be in many locations and on trains a lot. And she is completely unfamliar with the internet so unable to realy help.
I guess what I really need is advice on how to use the "mobile thru GSM or 3G". I know little to nothing about this. I have no idea on how to use the interet through a cell phone.
Could you explain the nuts and bolts of using your phone to connect I assume your laptop to the internet. I have a friend that does that here in the states with the edge (and older slower version of 802.11)using a blackberry phone in the middle. He has ask people from Ukraine about it but gets either an "its too expensive" or an "it doesnt work" answer. Which probably means "I do not know but do not want to sound stupid". The former Umc site said it was available in most areas of Ukraine for about 1 dollar per day. I have not looked since name change.
Have you used this and can you confirm costs. Any information is appreciated
Data via 'GSM' is either 2G or UMTS, but I'm sure they'll have 3G there (more modern, and know 4G is on its way). Your notebook probably will accept a GSM card which in turn will have to have a SIM - basically it is a cellphone for data interconnected to your PC, your gateway to the Internet.
Contact a local network and find out if prepaid data can be bought, and I'm sure that's possible. You'll know what size bundle you'll need, so just buy that once there. But, more importantly I'd find out what frequency they use, there are 4, important when buying the card - and, this card must be 'open', not bound to 1 network only (they exist!).
However, if you've got roaming ask your SP (@ home!) to advise you what to do. Not too difficult or too expensive, unless you're going to surf extensively there. For just some email it really is affordable Jet, no worries.
With a PC & card (& SIM) you'll be able to connect anywhere within the GSM covered areas - and that's what you want I take it.
Oh, yes, with a fancy phone you'll be able to surf too. Buy magnifying glasses, some ounces of patience & LOTS of time and it will work .....
Depends on what you want to do Jet, email is fine, surfing is horrendous (no doubt this will invoke comments of digital diehards :)
I wasnt talking about internet cafes I was talking about walk in have a coffee, have a meal and surf the internet on your laptop type cafes. They usually have a WiFi sign on the door.
As for cards I generally uses Svit Online http://old.svitonline.com/eng/index2.html who have an extensive network in Ukraine check out the URL for cities serviced. You can get prepaid cards at street vendors who are on most corners selling phone cards. Just remember that you need to set your modem to pulse dialing.
I have a Nokia that can either plug into the computer or use bluetooth. It has a connect to internet function that when you activate it it will connect to internet through whatever connection is fastest or you can set the service you want. It is also WIFI activated as well.
Okay... unless I completely misunderstand (which is a definite possibility) I need a 3g broadband card that works on a 450 mhz system. 450 MHZ?!?! Where do I find that? And is it what I am truly looking for?
Could someone more knowledgable (Thunder maybe, or GeminiDreams) tell me if I am on the right track?
jetmba,
If you dont get a better answer from anyone else I can tell you my solution as I am in the same boat. I just got back from Ukraine and am heading back in January. I found that there are many unlocked WIFI signals in business, restaurant, and cafe areas. But I had to walk around with my lap top trying to find those signals and looked like an idiot. But I did find many WIFI spots. This time I go back Im getting something like this: http://cgi.ebay.com/NOKIA-N95-8GB-BLACK_W0QQitemZ180191101331QQihZ008QQcategoryZ 64355QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem Sorry the links so long. This phone has every capability that you might need. It is WIFI capable so you can use it to find WIFI spots and even surf the web if you dont have your laptop. You can also make VOIP calls so you dont use your minutes. Just make sure you buy an unlocked one that will work on any GSM network. Also Puzata Hata Restaurants have WIFI and are located in Kiev and Lviv and maybe other major cities.
Prtpupr:
Likewise, I saw numerous cafes that offered wifi service - but I don't want to sit in cafes, plinking around on my laptop. I have a lady I intend to see (just one) for the continuation of a serious relationship. When I take her to a cafe I prefer to look at her rather than my laptop.
I've done a little more research since my last post and Thunder seemed to be right on with his advice (not the first time Thunder has been right on!). I did a little searching for "3G GPRS" card on ebay and found the majority of the less expensive offerings (under $600) to be located in UK. One company out of Texas offers a card but it appears to only slightly compatable with the Ukrainian system (900 GMS).
An example includes http://cgi.ebay.com/UNLOCKED-3G-GPRS-QUAD-Vodafone-Laptop-Data-Connect-Card_W0QQ itemZ250195578910QQihZ015QQcategoryZ96912QQrdZ1QQssPageNameZWD2VQQcmdZViewItem?_ trksid=p1638.m122
It SEEMS that this card would let me buy service from MTS in Ukraine and I could use it virtually anywhere (95% of the country is supposedly covered according to the literature).
Can anybody help - is this unit (which seems to range under $100) what I really need to connect my laptop reliably?
Jetmba
Buy the card in Ukraine. I know from experience that some mobile providers force you to use their own cards. Since theres a GPRS network in Ukraine then there will be cards you can buy there which will come with the software you need (although now the trend is to have a USB adaptor which don't require software to be installed). I use GPRS via a bluetooth connection to my laptop from my mobile as a last resort to access the web. Its dial up speed and the costs are probably something like 10cents for a MB (which is around 20 normal web pages). So its really only good for checking emails and sports results.
Ben's advice is not a bad one, but add 'thingy' - if you will use that 'thing' (card, dongel, usb-thingy) exclusively in Ukraine buy it there. Hardly any price differential and I know you can afford it anyway.
Mind you, to market an 'exclusive' thing (a not-open one) for a network costs more than a universal i.e. open unit, so you may get lucky even and will be able to use it in the US (or wherever) also. Be careful though NOT to purchase a unit from a Network/SP because these tend to be 'dedicated'(locked, not-open), and unlike phones/handsets these cannot be (easily) unlocked (if at all).
Nope, 450MHz is wrong, that's the broadband width, basically speed. GSM transmits on 4 bands, 900, 1800, 1900 and another (2100?), and you want a unit which will 'adapt' (multi-band) to any of these to enable it to 'talk'. As I said, it is akin to buying a handset, same thing almost.
Mind you, if your laptop has either infrared or bluetooth then your phone can act as the modem - if yours will receive in Ukraine. Then buy a bundle (sim) locally and off you go, at your place in your own time.
Best of luck on all fronts there Jet !
Ukraine telecom provides Wifi cards with passwords+username that need to be entered into when you log on. I got one for 24 Grivni. It allows you unlimited access anywhere where there is Ukraine telecom Wifi for a certain amount of Gigabytes that you download. Many hotels outside Kiev that are over 100USD/night have them as standard option.
Yes its new. And yes there is competition in Wifi market.
that would require Jet to be in a hotspot, and my hunch is that exactly that he does not like/prefer. GSM's the way to go, 3G, and if your (Jet) handset has wireless comm's with your laptop then you've already got all the HW to do what you want - just buy a local Sim.
Oh, very likely (like: I'm sure) various sim's are for sale Jet!
You need to buy one allowing you data (too), and you'll pay for a bundle (size of data-packet). Yeah, also some minutes talktime but you want the data specifically. I'm sure you'll ask her to do the talking? ;-)
Cheers,
TD
I've done a lot more research on this subject (for anyone interested) and find that actually MTS Ukraine DOES offer its 3G service on 450Mhz bandwidth. Its fairly unique. A few other countries (mostly South American countries, Russia and Finland I think) are using the technology but it make getting an unlocked modem from somewhere else, like ebay, out of the question. Has something to do with the number of relay stations required for rural usage, and the information is "packeted" when its sent ia a different way than other 3G services which DO use 850, 900, 1800, 1900 or 2100 bandwidth (there are a few other relatively obscure bandwidths, but I'm concerened with this one).
Ukraine also has 2G service for which I just bought a cheap unlocked Sierra 750 AirCard Modem GPRS, which I understand a 3G modem drops down to by default when the signal is not available.
I will take my Sierra 750 with me - but I will also see if I can buy or rent a special 450 MHz capable modem while in Ukraine - (just as advised by the many helpful people posting here).
One way or another I WILL get internet service without having to use dialup, internet cafes, or looking for wifi. I am absolutely positively sure of that (....sort of).
"...GPRS, which I understand a 3G modem drops down to by default when the signal is not available"
Correct Jet. Just a touch slower but you won't notice - unless you're going to Google Earth.
In between the lines I've seen that you've totally, like in absolutely, omitted to pick up on that biking trip, you know, the one crossing Europe. Akin to suave White Knights on their (German/US/Japanese/Italian - tick according to personal preference) Steeds, dodging the Elements, Potholes, Detours and modern-day uniformed Robbers, this all leading East to adventures unknown.
I will go skiing instead. That way I'll also get my adrenaline kicks, also will fall, will be surrendered to the elements by choice, and also will be robbed during broad daylight by buying simple refreshments.
Yeah Jet, I know a specific female is to blame ;-)
Go get her, I wish you well, and I will toast a Gluhwein on your trip!
Thunder - the biking trip would be great. And I STILL hope to meet you and the other guys in person one day. But I must admit that I have to aim my priorities slightly differently. Now if I had unlimited time and funds, I would do BOTH.
But alas I only have so much time off (unless I take endless time off which would reduce my available funds completely).
Of course this could all be solved with a simple lottery win. Then I wouldn't need employment OR money.
I will buy a ticket while having my fingers crossed. (Withdrawing my wallet from my pocket may be more difficult that way, but hey... I'm willing to make the extra effort.)
