Since my visit last April, I coudn't wait to come back. Nikolaev for me is a interesting and special place to be. Anyone thinking about a vacation or maybe a new place to live, Nikolaev should be on your list of choices.
The people here are hospitable and the food is plentiful. There are so many outside markets to buy food and produce, often I don't know which direction to walk when I need to shop.
Speaking of food, the prices are very reasonable. As for other neccesities, I have had no problem finding what I need here. From coats and hats to shoes and socks, you can find it here. I am really amazed at the variety of products available. Many of the electronics stores have a selection second to none from many of the cities in the US.
The stores, (magazines, as they are called here), stock products from around the world. Cosmetics from just about any name you are familiar with, are to be found here, including Mary Kay and Avon.
Last Thursday, I had my first haircut. I paid just ten griven or the equivelent in US dollars, two bucks. Maybe the nice lady was kind to me because I am a little thin on top, but I gladly paid my two dollars. She wouldn't even let me tip her. WOW, try and find that in America.
Born and raised in Calfornia for the last 54 years, I came here for several reasons, writing my book is one of them. It seems I had no time for it at home. Maybe when I wake up from my dream here, I will find time to actually write something: pinch me!
Well, I think it is time for dinner soon and I am a little hungry from all this writing.
Bill,
hahaha!!! Quite amusing.
Having visited Nikolaev, I find your comments hilarious. Ok, I have been to some far worse places, but Nikolaev is no more than a basic and very plain city with a very limited selection of restaurants. As a place to live I could probably think of about a million more interesting places to go! Hey, in England you can get shoes and socks too!

Yes Bill but at a substantial markup cost. I girl in Nikolaev I was with liked my razr phone, she said in stores it costed $300, of course at home I got it for under $100. Do you really think you are get deals on products in Nikolaev.
By the way in Nikolaev, they charge for the amount of hairs they have to cut!! :)) Last time when the girl cut my hair...she paid me!!!!!!! ;)))
I find the perfume worn by a lot of girls in Ukraine gives them a certain distinction not found anywhere else.
First time I experienced it was at Boristopol airport when I scrounged a fag off this gorgeous little twenty something princess...leaned in close to get a light and nearly fell off my feet.
Still gives me a stiffy to this day when I catch that aroma.
shoot I've been living in nikolaev with my girl for a few months now and I love it here. you know the old saying no news is good news. its calm here kinda like home sept I dont have to talk with anyone, cause I no speaky the language:) solitude is nice, my girl own some apartments here and she and I are just chillin from one to the next when she not renting them out.
I dont mean to boast but damn ive never had it so good, if you find a good one dont let go and be faithful and your set.
manabroad. If you do not speak the language I suppose it is a bonus if you do not have to speak to your mother in law.
But personally speaking i found it to be a problem not speaking the Russian language fluently, -especially in shops i became to reliant on my Russian girlfriend to be with me. When ever i want to just go down to the supermarket to buy something to eat or whatever it became awkward and i felt the cashiers were trying to pull a fast one on me being a non native speaker. But now though i know quite a few Russian phrases to get by.
Language difference is not a big problem here if you are not afraid to learn at least some Russian. If the moderator will allow this....www.byki.com will let you download a light version of russian for free. It is a simple program, easy to learn. Also, there are pocket translators you can use here. I use it often.
no your right I agree its good to know a few phrases, and I do, but I can in no way carry on a conversation:) whats funny is when you run into another english speaking person, heads are turning. Ive even had people stop and stare then ask what we are talking about. that took me by suprise.
Bill I am going to be in Nikolaev in June leave your e mail address.
Personally speaking i do not like the electronic translators they are too slow and the byki com site is just about average. The best methood for myself was to locate a Russian speaker in my own country to record on to tape chunks of Russian text that i asked to translated and spoken slowly.
