In my experience, friends are next to useless at teaching their language to novices - unless they have specialist teacher training - but invaluable at teaching intermediate and advanced speakers.
Girlfriends have a tendency to want to speak English, and to get terribly upset when you try to practice your new language skills on anyone except her - which is why I'd prefer professional help. :)
First of all, learn that it is not "The" Ukraine, Ukraine is not a region of some country, but a country itself. So referring to it as "The Ukraine" might get some funny looks from your peers there.
Another thing is that although Russian may be taught at the Universities in Ukraine when I was there a year ago Ukraine was leaning toward dropping the Russian language in public schools and teaching only the Ukrainian language. One of the taxi drivers in Dnepropetrovsk told me that the schools there would no longer teach Russian starting last year.
ben,
I think 'the' comes into it when one is referring to a plural, a group or a region, perhaps technically incorrect but that's English for you!
The USA is a plural of a group of states, people will refer to The America's (North & South) but they won't refer to USA as 'The America'. People say 'The FSU', 'The UK', 'The EU', 'The Baltic States' these are all groups ..... they don't say 'The Scandinavia' because it is not a plural.
But people do not say 'The France', 'The Germany', 'The Ireland', 'The Australia' so why 'The Ukraine'?
Perhaps one of the few correct ones is 'The Netherlands' (The Low Lands), again it is a plural of something.
do all of u have a linguistic background? or even better all of u r professors ?
hey, this question has been aroused on many symposiums and in many books. and still no agreement of opinion.
and some of u want to tell others to remember once and for all that Ukraine is used with the definite article or without.
if one of u is so clever please go ahead and defend a dissertation on this problem, and we all will accept the proves and an answer will be given to this eternal question.
i dont know which variant is correct,so i dont want to impose my opinion on u but the fact that Ukraine was used and is used with The has some historical background. try to learn the etimology of the word Ukraine.it will shed light on why it s used with The, and prove that this point of view has right to exist
I should not say this but I just cannot help it. The countries of the FSU must be female in nature. They seem to like to change the names of everything periodically just as a woman changes her hair style and color or rearranges the house. For us poor men it is sometimes confusing but also intriguing, interesting, and adds mystery.
yes this hair thing and so on has me baffled, i wonder if they really listen to a man, other then that last comment,,
i guess we just need to take a mental note just to be sure to say, yes dear thats lovely.
Nikolaev will be a tough way to go if you live here and decide to teach. A better option would be to move to Kiev and call Mike at Phoenix School of language. A part time job teaching english could pay you as much as 1200 dollars a month. Also? It is possible to get your TEFL certificate while you teach. Kiev is hosting the Olympics in 2012, there will be a continual need for english teachers there for some years.
Really? the year after London is hosting it? Perhaps you mean the football? Euro2012. I think you have been spending too much time in the kitchen Bill.
Lesson in English Articles for nobody knows: "The" is used in reference of very few countries. Just think about it for a moment. Now the history part of it. "The" Ukraine was used when it was part of the Soviet Union, IE a region of. Now that it is an independent country the Article is dropped. Since Ukraine received their independence from the Soviet Union, they prefer and properly so to be called Ukraine. Most of us educated outside of the socialist public school systems learned this in the US, so a degree is not needed in linguistics to know the proper use of articles.
nasfan, i followed yr advice and thought for a moment, sure , i need to appologise and present my condolences that u r still just a nasfan and not an Enstein (or at least George Lakoff).
and one more comment Nasfan, please - who is that part of the educated people u r referring to? the ones who use The? definitely true. when we get some education we ll join u. leave some room for us
It IS the EURO that is being held in Kiev in 2012 - Its being held at Olympic Stadium, which was sued by the old USSR as part of the 1980 Olymics. The stadium itself though was built in 1923.
Also this years "Euro" (Euro2008) involves no english speaking teams and in another 4 years it will probably be the same. Its no wonder that UK guys like martin think don't know what you mean by "Euro" as they're not good enough to qualify :)
