Planning a trip to Chisinau, Moldova, first time there. Doesn't seem to be much talk about this country. Has anyone visited there recently and can recommend apts, taxi service, restaurants, sightseeing or their thoughts on the city.
I hope to take a bus from Chisinau to Odessa and wanted to avoid Transniester zone. No reasonable airfare from Chisinau to Odessa. What a ripoff!!! It costs 35% of my total trip to take that flight and it takes 5-6 hours( same as bus time). Just flying into this city added several hundred dollars to my airfare.
Gonna see a couple girls on this trip I met through a free russian site. We'll see how that goes. Nice thing is they speak good english. Have to admit girls from Moldova seem very friendly on site.
beemer,
Any airline route only operates, survives, if it is commercially viable ..... there are not enough regulars that would ever conceive flying between KIV & ODS :)
I wonder about your post because the bus routes between those cities increases exponentially in summer. There are probably 10 buses running year round. It would have to be cost wise not affording to fly. It is expensive to fly into KIV.
I take it you have not been to Moldova??
beemer,
How much does it cost to operate a bus compared to the millions it cost to operate a 'decent' aircraft.
There was an airline operating between KIV and Kiev but they stopped that so things must have been bad, i.e. a lack of fare paying souls.
Just for info I am good 'business' buddies with the CEO of Moldavian Airlines, I've even suggested a KIV-Kiev route to him but he obviously knows the numbers of fare paying souls are simply not there. He's starting a Timisoara (Romania) to Odessa route though!
Don't know how much it costs but could fly KIV-Timisoara (TSR) and then TSR to ODS, flights with www.carpatair.ro (sister company of Moldavian Airlines) but you'd need to spend several hours in Timisoara but it's a nice place, the first European tram operated there, the first European electric street light is still there (somewhere), indeed I think they had the first European electricity but I could be wrong :)
And as for the Romanian ladies, well I'm only allowed to 'window shop', I'm not allowed to go in and buy :)
Everybody should renew their experience of riding the bus every so often anyhow. Just make sure you remember your toilet paper and some change to get into the out house unless your prefer behind a tree.
Hi Beemer
I have been there over 10 times, infact I'm pretty much based there now although 2/3 of the time I'm traveling with work. For apartments have a look at http://www.logisticsmoldova.com/. There a number of such agencies and I've never had a problem. Get an apartment close to the city centre. They can provide pick up from the airport too. Theres a wine tour you can do that is very good, although i've never done it myself. The city itself is very green and pretty with lots of parks and safe. But best to go when its warm. Let me know when your in town and if I'm there I we could catch up for a beer.
As for getting to Odessa, your right there are no direct flights. The best way would be taxi via Transniester. It would take 2-3 hours and cost around $120. I've been to Transniester many times and never had a problem, although I use taxi drivers from Transniester so there less likely to be any issue at the border. You do need to fill out a form when entering and you have to fill it out in Russian, but if your've been to russian and have a russian visa then look at that as it should have your name writtern in Russian. At worst they will try and get $20 dollars out of you when your about to cross into Ukraine. A bus would take ages.
I beleive flights to Kiev would be uneconomical but also I have heard the Moldovian government didn't let Ukrainian based airlines fly the same route, so Ukraine closed down the moldovian service. If your going to fly from KIV to ODS I'd rather fly via Istanbul, the flying time would be 1/2 of that going via Timisoara, but will still cost you probably 300 euro at a guess. Or you could get the over night train to Bucharest, and fly to Osdessa from there. Flying in and out of Moldova is never cheap.
Adresa was the apartment i stayed in, they have 24hr reception,it is very modern and in a good area,by the Police station too. Moldova, has very pretty girls, but very little else.
Thankx Ben, do you know of anything about these places: Boucherie Symposium, Socoro Castle, Cricova Tour(wine), Stella de Lux Hotel???? Is Andy's Pizza good? Is the Megapolis mall built now? How is area around Bulgaria/Bucuresti/31 August 1989 area? I think that is near Stefan de Cere. I'll be there first weekend of April, not sure how many days, beer sounds good for me!!!!!
Trouble with flights is not only cost but time. It costs under $10 usd for bus fare for the 6 hour ride( 3.5hr driving,.5hr at moldovan border and 2hr at ukrainian border. I was hoping to go southern route through Palanka border crossing.
Zeeco, is there a site you used to book apt?
Hey Beemer,
You've sure got the spirit of adventure, and a determination to reach your goal. I have absolutely no doubt you will end up finding a star of a woman. I'm off to meet my ladies mum in a few weeks in Astrakhan, the most southern city of Russia, which borders Asia. This sure beats living a boring life. I wish you well.
Hi Beemer. I can tell you Andy's Pizza is very good. But I haven't done the Cricova tour (although i have drunk a few bottles). Haven't used Stella de Lux Hotel before but it looks good. Apartments are about the same price. Normally I stay a month so appartments are better value for money but if i was staying a week something like Stella de Lux Hotel would be ideal. Boucherie is a french restaurant, is this what you mean? Its good, but my wife doesn't like steak so we've never gone back. I don't think the Megapolis mall has been built. Theres not many malls there, I know of only 2 that could count as a mall, although I could be wrong as i don't tend to go out of the centre much. Bulgaria/Bucuresti/31 August 1989 is a very good area, its only a few minutes walk from Stefan Cel Mare (i assume this is what you mean). There are some nice appartments in this area so you can't really go wrong.
I'm sure you could go by bus for $10, as long as you have a local show you where the bus stop is you'll be fine. Personally I'd take a taxi as I hate wasting time travelling.
I may been there around this time, at least that the plan, although my time table is always changing. But hopefully I will.
Hey Tringa!!! Thanks for the thoughts!!!! Always crossing my fingers.....will meet a couple girls who are not on any agency site, so this is a first for me, will be interesting to see how their behavior is different from an agency girl...I know one thing, english is good. Good luck with your meeting...talk about going off the beaten path...do you have to use a machete to carve a trail through the tundra to find Astra....what ever that is????
My best to you!!!
Ben, where is Stella de Lux at??? Near center?
Yes, the french restaurant!!! The Bulgaria/Bucuresti/31 August 1989 area I was looking at apts also, they are western style, new and provide internet/computer. They cost around 60 euros.
I am usually like you with time but a few extra hours on bus can save me some money to buy girls some gifts. Most of time on bus is waiting at border for passage. I'll let you know what progresses in re to trip. I appreciate your insights....nothing like having an eye in the sky.
We in the States think of driving vs flying from time and economical factors as well as the advantage of having a car at your destination if you drive. We had a Russian tour group at our church in November and they could not believe the roads in the states. They had a video clip taken on the transcontinental highway running through Russia. I understand that about 1000 kilometers of this highway is not paved and in this clip there were semi trailer trucks buried to the floor of their beds, cars up to their windshields, ruts that appeared to be 2 feet deep, and people standing all over including ladies in miniskirts and heels. At age 19 I may have tried to drive my 4 wheel drive pickup into this quagmire to see if I could do it but cannot fathom somebody driving a regular car into it. This was a wet spring right after the thaw I think and I do not know how far this quagmire ran but I was a heavy highway contractor for 15 years and it appeared that you would spend days per mile with a dozer removing vehicles before you could even start putting the highway back together again. And I am sure this is in less populated areas and would not be a factor in the Western Fsu but may be where Tringa is going. And of course the rail system is much more developed there than the US and more efficient than the long distant roads.
beemer and oz,
Fortunately, I am able to get a flight there from Moscow as Astrakhan has an airport. This is where my girlfriend grew up, and it's at the delta of the River Volga where it enters the Caspian Sea. She describes it as a ''dirty old city'' but it has a lot of history as it's on the ancient silk route. I'll check out the ladies there and let you all know if I think it would be good pioneering turf for wife hunting.
Ben...looks like I'll be there on 2nd. still haven't decided on place to stay yet. A guy in Chisinau will get me a moldovian number and I'll get it to you. I did find a couple buses that leave north bus station around noon that go around transneister area through Palanka to Odessa. I hope this part of my trip goes smoothly, it was what worried me most.
Have you heard anything about 'People' or 'Drive' clubs?
Hey Tringa! I have been to Astrakhan! It was my first trip to the FSU way back in August 2000. I then returned in August 2001. Back then they didn't have one single Internet cafe. And I never saw any ladies and only a few men with Mobile phones. I'm curious what has become of the city now. Perhaps you have already left on you trip. I look forward to hearing your update. I had used and a marriage agency called Allure. They were huge scammers. They closed down eventually. I hope they didn't reopen and you are using them. If the owner is Alexie then you're screwed. Good luck!
Hi Deano,
That's really interesting, I'll report on what I see. I've been to Volgograd, but want to see the 'backwoods' as it were, a little of Russia that is prety much untouched by the west, if this is still possible.
Fortunately I am in an established relationship with my Russian girfriend. I don't like agencies at all and wouldn't use them other than for first contact.
I travel in a few weeks.
Regards, Tringa.
My favorite restaurant was a small place called Contrast. It had good food and good service. This city of Astrakhan is dirty mainly because of all the dust. The city is built on the old Volga delta which was covered by the Casipian Sea so the ground is heavy in Salt content so you won't be seeing any green grass anywhere. I found the people very pleasant. The agency I dealt with was a total scam but the girl I met there was not. She gave up their secret to me and we then dated outside of them. I don't think you will see too many foreigners there. So, the city should be yours! :) Good luck and give us an update when you return.
