I am trying to plan a trip to Egypt from Kiev with my Ukrainian Girl/friend I met a few years ago during my travels in Ukraine. Does anybody know the best way to go about this? My girl/friend has told me she can arrange everything through a travel agent in Kiev but I don’t know if this is the best option? Also would I be able to arrange a trip like this from a travel agency here in the states?
You should be able to organise it from you local travel agent, if you are European then www.opodo.com is a good site, if you are N. American then they have their own sites but also try www.flyuia.com (Ukraine International Airlines) and www.aerosvit.ua/eng.html (Aerosvit).
If she is offering to organise it then that involves you sending money ..... alwaysc a very risky affair!
Going to Egypt from Kiev isnt exactly difficult. Every travel agent in Kiev has deals to Egypt as it is one of the few close places that Ukrainians can travel without much hassle. As you can buy the visas on entry to Egypt you can book the travel online, from Kiev or from anywhere!
Gtraveler, she is probably correct. I have seen lots of package deals advertised in Moldova for Egypt. This includes flight/hotel/transfers. You could arrange it from the states but you won't get the same deal as a package deal. You would have to book hotel and flights independently. Ask her to inquire about the cost and compare that with what you could book online. Personally I would book it myself so I know what I was getting.

I am from USA, Yes I think it would be best to book trip myself from local agent but would I be able to arrange everything for her with my agent even though she is Ukrainian? Yes the thought of sending a large amount of money is not a good Idea.
Gtraveller,
It's the same as if you book yourself a ticket online, just her name instead of yours. If you can't organise an e-ticket and the ticket is posted to you then all you have to do is DHL it to her.
Booking a hotel likewise, she might need confirmed accommodation to enter Egypt so just book it in her name and send her the information by email.

But wouldn't it be the correct thing to do if I can find lower rates if I book the vacation with my travel agent, but you could be right why complicate things just to save a few bucks.
Gtraveler, I doubt you could get it cheaper, in fact i think you could pay twice as much if you book from the US.
At least have a look so you have an idea of the price.
I am sure Martin is more familiar with this than I am but if it is FSU transportation my experience has been that a copy of the passport of the traveling person is necessary to book it. And DHL from the United States will cost as well as having the tickets sent to you in the first place so if hard tickets are necessary there will more than likely be 50 to 100 dollars Us spent just to get tickets in her hand.
I am sure that you are already trying to keep this as seamless as possible for her. It is difficult not to want to shave the cost as much as possible but to make the traveling and booking experience pleasant for her has a value also.
Never heard of a passport being required to buy a ticket, only when one comes to use the ticket.
Now putting myself in this position we would need to coordinate flight times, to arrive in Egypt as close to each other as reasonable. Because of my background in air travel I would take charge, check her possible flight times then try to find a similar schedule for myself but both buttons would need to be clicked simutaneously to ensure getting the seats, no good one person booking, taking a day or so to confirm it to the other person, for the other person to then find that all his possible flights have sold out for that day.
In this day and age it only takes one person, with internet, to book a holiday, no agencies, and with too many fingers in the pie and it's more likely to all go horribly wrong.
And with the exception of FSU internal flights generally speaking we can get better international flight prices than they can. Talking as a European the FSU doesn't have Kelkoo, Ebookers, Lastminute, Opodo etc. etc. etc., they still do it the old fashioned way whereas a travel agent will attempt to sell the flights that they make the most commission on, airlines offer travel agents special incentives for 'hard selling'.
And guys, if you go to a travel agency website such as Ebookers or whatever the US, or wherever, equivalent is and once you've decided upon the flight for you then, before booking, go direct to that airline's website and you'll probably get it cheaper.
