My Russian wife and I have been married 3 years. Her 25 year old daughter and her 6 month grandchild, now that the baby's father decided he didn't want to be a dad, are interested in immigrating to the USA. We are in the exploration stage.
My questions are:
Has anyone had any experience with this situation?
If so, how long did the application process take?
By American standards this young woman has a US college education and we have sufficient income to support her and her child by US Immigration requirements.
Just want to know time line and special problems.
Note, I did the finance visa and all the Green Card forms by myself, so I'm fairly savvy on the forms.
You might check on www.visajourney.com. Search their forum it has tons of information regarding all types of visa situations. This is a little different than a friend of mine had. He brought his step daughter over as a k1 dependent and when she went back to college, she tried to come back on the same type of visa, but denied it the second time. It would be interesting to hear about how your's transpires.
I agree the paperwork is easy all it takes is common sense and document, document everything.
I'm Nasfan's friend and I have a little experience with this situation. My step daughter arrived a while after her mother on a K-2 visa. She only stayed a few months during the summer and then returned to continue her studies as a university student. Last summer we wanted her to visit and work and the J-1 student work and travel visa seemed like a perfect fit. Unfortunately she was denied that visa at the embassy in Moscow based on the fact that she had been to the US before and that her mother was now married and living in the US. Of course their thoughts were that she was not planning to return to Russia. It would also follow that she will never be successful at obtaining a visitors visa for the same reasons. Our senator was of no help and his office said the embassy can essentially do what it wants.
After the visa problem last year we decided to beat the fee increase and apply for an immigrant visa (I-130) for her based on her mothers permanent residence status. Note that we (US spouse) cannot apply for a step child unless they were under 18 at the time of our marriage. The mother must apply. My wife applied for her daughter last July, and received the NOA1. Looks like the current wait could be up to 5 years. When my wife receives her US citizenship then the application will get bumped up to first priority and processed (hopefully) immediately.
If your wife is now or will soon be a US citizen the wait will be much shorter. Good luck.
See, I do have one friend in this World!! Now five more to go and I will have pall bearers. Now I understand why my dad said you only need six good friends. Thanks Doc for the assist.
You didn't think I was still checking here, did you? Always willing to help a guy out with a REAL question like back in the "old" days. I don't have as much time now to look here as I used to with working around the house (to bring it up to a Russian woman's standard)and repairing boats and taking the (non-driving)wife shopping.
