Just in case anyone is going here I just came back and had a good time I felt very safe and stayed in Hotel Uzgorod it was about 120 euros for the week and that incuded a meal as well and breakfast each day. People were very friendly and taxis and food reasonable as well. No mcdonalds though! Very little English and found this hard ive been to alot of Eastern European countries and never found any problems before. I flew into Budapest and its about 6hours from there on the train with one change over trains run quite regularly. I didnt bring food with me on the journey and assumed there would be a dining carriage haha no chance.
There was a Hungarian man traveling across the border and he had bread and cheese and wine and shared with me even though we had no shared lanuage. Then a old Ukranian lady got on and fed me cake and biscuits! It was a big wine growing region and drank plenty of that and champagne from Odessa at 4 euros a bottle!
Hi Colin,
Uzhgorod is a great place . It is good when I see someone has been there and had a good time. The train ride is a good one from what I have been told. I fly in to Budapest and then have someone pick me up for a 4 to 5 hour drive to the city.
If you go back any time soon I can direct you to plenty of people that speak English as well as we do. Much of it is with a British accent, however it is well spoken and easily understood. Yes the wine and champagne is outstanding and so are the people.
The first time I went to Uzhgorod I stayed at the Hotel Duet. Good service and good food as well. I was in a 2 room suite.I think the rates were $22.00 USD per day. Indoor pool and other good things.
sure going back in a months time good to hear some english speakers! Any americans or british there at all?
they told me I was the first Irish person to go there lol
you know what i found funny when i was at all the different tourist spots ,all the russian tourists getting off buses taking pictures! so this is where they hide out lol
Hi Colin,
Yes there are British and Americans living there. Irish ? Well I can't say that I have ever spoken to an Irish person there. Being as close to Ireland as it is, I am sure there have been some visitors. we must also remember that Uzhgorod is very close to Hungary, Poland, Romania,Moldova and Slovakia . Out of all of those countries I am sure a Irishman has passed through. However when I first went I was told that I was the only American they had ever seen and it turned out there were a class room full of Americans at the National University and even 3 Americans and 2 Brits living 1 block away. You remember this Colin. if you are in Uzhgorod and you have to have help. Get yourself to the National University find the English dept and you will be run over by English speakers. I was offered a position in the English dept in 2004. The job was great, the pay was not. I can and will give you English speaking contacts there if you request them. Thanks for your time. Ranger
border guards were amazed with my passport and asked could they show it to their colleagues they told me more than once never had a irish passport been used at that crossing point
