Okay - we all know that conventional wisdom says it is nearly impossible for a young single woman from the FSU to get a Tourist Visa, with invitation, to visit the USA.
But has anyone ever actually TRIED to secure one for a girl?
well....from my experience i can say that it wasnt very hard. i just got my 5 years tourist visa. Ofcourse i have already been in US before. But i can share with some advices. You can provide your lady with a good invitation letter. or as i did....i wrote it myself. You have to write there about how do you know her and i think the good occasion will be if you say that you want to invite her for Christmas or N Y hollidays, but be speciffic with the days when you want her to come. Its good if it is not more then two weeks. But if she gets visa....it usually more then that. And sure she has to speek english in the interview. They also like to ask about who is going to pay the trip and its better if she sais that she is going to or her parents will help her. Also she will have to prove her ability to pay. In my interwiev i said that my dad will pay all costs. Im a student and my dad makes enough money so i just brought the paper which shows his salary for the last 6 month.
wish you good luck
I'd like to ask how old you are. And are you, indeed single?
Also what country are you from?
Don't mean to be too personal with these questions - but sometimes its EASIER to get a Tourist Visa if the person is from a nondisadvantaged country, is older and is already married to someone from home country.
The resson the question comes up is that my lady certainly did have an interet in acquiring a tourist visa if we thought is was possible. (As I mentioned in another thred).
With a tourist visa there is more time and less pressure to marry NOW (in fact, technically you shouldn't even be CONSIDERING marrying now) than there is with a fiance visa.
Just yesterday she asked me about the possiblilty of an invitation letter. She had heard of such things but thought that they either a.) allowed a person to go to the USA WITHOUT a visa or b.) would GUARANTEE the Tourist Visa. I told her that both notions were wrong and that an Invitation Lette was only an assist in applying for a Tourist Visa - which she had no hope of getting anyway because of her age (27). It appears that I was wrong about the last part.
miss is a student, so it could be assumed that she has a compelling reason to return to Ukraine (to finish her schooling). She has also BEEN to the US before and returned, which is a mark in her favor. SHe also has family money - her father is well off enough that immigration authorities were convinced that there was no immediate economic need to flee.
My aldy has none of these advantages working for her - so I am still not sure that she would qualify.
Jet, I know a ukrainian girl who has same situation to miss except for most important..her family is not as well off. Girl has been to US, english skills very good AND her father lives in US but now she is 22 and is not able to get visa. :((
yes, your right, the invitation letter is only assists your application. as i said i wrote it myself, its not a big deal. Didnt you check the US Ambassy in Kiev e-site... everything is clear there about how to applay and what to bring. The most important is to write it well and prepare all aditional papers in a proper way and to be ready to answer the questions. All she needs is to persuade the officer that she has a great family, friends, job, maybe some property, or...plans for futer...here in Ukraine....so she is not going to stay in US. And be able to explaine why she wants to go to US.
Actually when i was preparing my papers i did some research in the internet and i found out that there are so many people who want you to help...of course for money...but nobody guarantee you a 100%. So dont believ that eather.
What i wanted to say is that everything is possible you just have to be well prepared and confident during the interwiev.

Curious, what is the cost of the application for a visa, any paperwork, etc? I am also talking with a lady and she has mentioned some of the difficulties and costs involved, and of course, after 6 weeks of communications, I am now very skeptical.. Any info would be great.

i think miss made it quite clear seems to be similar to alot of tourist visa applications you show that you will be returning to your home of origin and that you have reasons to want to return home. If you go in without proof then probaly your chances are low
I do not know this but would guess that a potential mate would be tha last person who you would want writing an invitation. Bringing this to immigrations attention would strenthen the potential danger in their eyes of no return.
While it is technically LEGAL for a woman on a Tourist Visa to marry an American in the USA - it is ILLEGAL and considered to be based on a faudulent application if a woman obtains a Tourist Visa with the INTENT of marrying a guy.
Thats the problem.
If she has already applied for a fiance visa with a man (granted or not) it would be crazy to have her immediately apply for a Tourist Visa - and then to marry while visiting the US on it. Don't know how readily the Homeland Security Deparment (formally INS) would prosecute but they COULD and she could easily end up with a three or ten year BAR from entering the country under any circumstances.
CERTAINLY it would be foolish for the exfiance to write the letter of invitation in support of the later Tourist Visa. Thats just asking for trouble.
Having married on a Tourist Visa - the woman must apply for an "adjustment of status" which the government is not readily giving anymore. Not sure but she may very well have to back to home country after Tourist Visa expires (if it soon expires) and apply for one of the two types of "married visa" (to brig someone over that you are already married to) available.
Well Im sure if she dosnt out stay her Tourist Visa and then returns home this would be a bonus in her favour when looking for a fiance visa? Easliy she could have met the man of her dreams on her tourist visa
ANYTIME a woman returns as required its a point in her favor for the next time. And I'm betting that she could CLEARLY get a fiance visa having met a guy on a tourist visa.
Its getting that tourist visa in the first place that is the hard part.
Correct Jet on both points. The difficulty is getting the initial tourist visa. Once you have the visa, use it and actually return, subsequent visas are much easier.
As to getting married on a tourist visa, this is an invitation to disaster, unless you want her to stay her illegally. When you go for your adjustment of status, if it comes up you married her on a tourist visa, it is presumed to be faudulent and the adjustment of status will most likley be denied and then she will have to go back and you have to reapply for a K-3 and wait.
