I am intererested in visiting Odessa for a week in June. I have meet a couple of girls from myspace who offered to show me around, I plan on meeting more by just being social and being out and about in the city. I would like to hear of other experiences and suggestions for odessa and meeting women.
Odessa is best avoided -many of ladies age 18 to 24 are scammers looking to get money from gullible men to help them through college. On the plus side they are much more mature than college girls in Florida.
Odessa is a great place to visit in summer. July and August is best as it is holiday season. Stay central and fot the nice buildings and restaurants and go to Arcadia for night clubbing, its has some good open air night clubs with lots of girls.
Forget the scammer comments these are for those using agencies and looking for brides.
In Odessa is easy to make social contact in the open air cafes and at the night clubs and bars.
Also check out the russian language intro sites, free and lots of gorgeous women.
I quite enjoyed the few days I occupied in Odessa some years back, in some respects if one has seen one Ukrainian city then one has seen them all but the centre of Odessa is different, the architecture has a 'seaside' feel about it.
But we warned of the Odessa airport taxi drivers, I've transitted thru ODS airport on 4 occasions, the last time having had a transit time of 4 hours there, and I had to request the help of the police to get those guys off my back, shouting 'NET' or 'Phuck Off', that's what they had reduced me to, simply wasn't having any effect.

Thanks. I am considering staying close to arkadia (close to beach and night clubs is a plus) vs staying centrally in odessa (closer to restaurants, pubs, etc). Does anyone have any opinions, pros and cons, on the different locations?
Hello doc. Arkadia is great. I stayed there in '06, 4 days (Palace del Mar) and '07 5 days (Morskoy). Both excellent, Del mar was more expensive ~$240 a night. Morskoy is right next to the boardwalk so the beach is right across the street. Four major nightclubs within 150 meters. The "boardwalk" actually a paved road runs along the coastline and there is a different beach every 100 meters or so.
To consider:
The discos pound all night..literally until 5 or 6 AM great if you party all night. Not so great otherwise. (earplugs wont help)
Public restrooms there are a few along the "Health Walk" but they are virtually unusable.
I found the people to be very friendly, the only times I felt "hassled" were the few times the police sized me up and asked to see my passport.
I am in Odessa right now. What do you want to know?
It's a great city to visit. The weather is the perfect temperature right now, warm but not too hot.
I prefer to stay in the center rather than at Arcadia. There is a ton of action every night in the center--restaurants, cafes, bars, a couple of clubs; it's fun just to walk around and check everything out.
As far as meeting women, I've met some nice girls just by hanging out at cafes and being friendly. It's definitely possible if you're polite.
I know a couple of honest agencies here, so I wouldn't say that every agency is bad.
Great. I have decided to rent an apt from odessaapts.com downtown so we shall see how it goes. In terms of flying into odessa airport, is VIP service through customs pretty helpful or suggested? I speak only english and if customs will be either a hassle or take alot of time, paying $100 to get thru the process easier and faster would be worth it to me.
doc,
Odessa airport is fine, those VIP services are a rip off, ODS is quite an international airport, order an airport pick-up from odessaapts.com (they do transportation) and avoid the ODS airport taxi drivers like the plague (you'll understand once you've experienced their hastling of you).
Mind you, ODS has to have the bumpiest runway that I have ever experienced, even pilots remark on it, as you're about to touch down look out of the window at the condition of the runway surface :)
But as far as transitting the airport, customs, immigration etc., I have done it 4 times with no problem whatsoever.
ODS is a lot smaller than you would think an airport serving a city of one million would be. One waiting area, one departure area and two departure "Gates" about 50 feet apart. Customs is easy. Just make sure you fill out the declaration form completely. (If they dont give you one on the plane they are available in the arrival area). Since you're still going to wait for baggage the VIP service is only going to save you 5 to 10 minutes.
I found departures to be a little more hectic because they process 2-4 flights in about the same period of time. Having been to Moscow and Kiev, I found the people of Odessa to be more tolerant. There always seemed to be someone who understood English near by.
