Hello I am going to Ukraine in the end of april, I was just wondering, could it be cheaper to buy a one way ticket to ukraine, and when I am going home buy a one way ticket from Ukraine back home, or are the prices the same anybody who knows ?
Do you know precisely when you are going home? Or is it iffy?
Remember - Ukraine (especially Kyiv) is not the boondocks anymore.
Not a lot of unscheduled airline flights or bush pilots. Delta flies regularly scheduled flights from JFK tO Kyiv, nonstop. Round trip tickets now cost around $800 for that trip. Use the popular travel search engines like Orbitz and Travelocity.
Definitely less expensive to get the flight you want (if you know when) as part of a round trip package than to try to book one way at some later date,
I'd say the risk outweighs the cost saving.....(if there is any saving)
Meaning you might not be able to get back home when you want.
You could buy a single ticket back out for double the cost you paid to get in.
When I got stranded in Kyiv (long story told elsewhere in forum) before LOT agreed to provide a very cheap "exchange" for my expired tickets (which still surprises me) I spent A LOT of time on the internet at a bar in Borispol Airport, using the popular search engines. I DID find cheap tickets out - but the days were very inconvenient and all required paper tickets - to be furnished by the travel agent located in Las Vegas (Travelocity).
Fortunately I did not have to use that option - but I have no clue as to how I would have gotten the paper tickets delivered to me.
When I was in Zaporozhye one time there was significant snow and I started to look at cost effective alternatives of getting home should I miss my (non changeable) flight out of Kiev.
One thing, at that time, I learnt is that Aerosvit can have some reasonably priced one-way tickets to at least some of their European destinations so the trick, if stranded, might be to get oneself out of Ukraine to a more recognised international airport and then try getting home from that other airport.
i live in the UK and need to fly to kiev next week, but am not exactly sure how long i will be there, to see this girl called olya. should i buy a return ticket then and make a guess at when i will want to return? also, anyone know of the best airline, etc, for my trip. as a guess i want to stay there for around a month or so initially. thanks for any advice. /pete
pete,
www.swiss.com have some reasonable prices from Heathrow, Brum & Manchester and the joy with Swiss is that you can buy a fixed date outward flight and a flexible return.
Swiss codeshare with Ukraine International between Zurich & Kiev, Swiss are good but UIA are even better for level of cabin service.
from what digging i have dune about this myself, it seems if you pay a bit more for the return ticket or seat as in you don't buy the cheap seats on any particular airline it makes your ticket more flexible without extra major cost added to it for moving departure ahead or later.
but stress this fact with travel agent about flexibility so they understand your need.
that's interesting Pete from what i understand i have to have a return ticket.
funny enough i have the flight via Zurich to Moscow flying Swiss next week, for its flexibility.
cheers for the info martin and kiwinorth! i appreciate your quick replies! i really really can't wait to see olya, after 10 months of chatting to her on the phone!
On the immigration form you have to fill out to enter Ukraine, box number 10 on the departure side asks "Flight (Registration Vehicle) No." So you have to put your flight number for the plane you are leaving on. I screwed up this last time and put my arrival flight number on both sides and went right through and I did not even realize it until I read this thread and remembered in the past I had to enter my departure flight number somewhere. I always take a couple extra immigration and customs forms home so next time I can have them filled out before I get to the airport and get in line faster. Of course the airplane crew gives the immigration form to you before you land but the customs are not available until you get to the airport. Then I just pick up another or two make sure the form has not changed and get in line.
just to double check... i presume i don't need to fill out any other forms or anything to be allowed in to ukraine? (apart from my passport of course!) i should have really checked this already!
peteb when are you in kiev - I might be there from may 3rd to may 5th. Buy a return ticket for a guesstimate return date, it will only cost you 40-odd pounds to change the date of the return flight and you can usually do it at fairly short notice, but check with the airline.
peteb, hi again no you don't need a visa or anything so don't panic :-), you will however need to know the address you are staying at so that you can fill out a landing card.
Pete you will need to fill the immigration form out before going through passport control. After passport control there will be custom declaration forms on tables and you will need to fill one of them out before going through customs. immigration forms have both English and Russian on them. Customs forms are either English or Russian (there should be a pile of each). I have uploaded a copy of the customs form, the immigration form, a bus ticket, and train tickets to http://www.4shared.com/dir/6767186/5027a712/ukraine.html if you want to look at the questions or download so you can have your answers ready. I have translated train and bus ticket so you can print and take a copy with you to be able to read if you ride one of them.
Actually OZ, on immigration form, it asks to fill out left side completetly and 1-6 on right side. I have been asked several times in customs about where I am staying, so fill that in, although at times I just tell them some company name and I don't know address and taxi knows where apt to take me to( it is last minute travel!! :)) )
I don't even bother to fill in last part on right side of form when leaving, never been asked and never thought about it.
Martin thats not my experience, I've changed the return date on my Ukraine Airways economy flight with just 24 hours notice. AFAIK most economy return deals allow changes of the return flight (only) for a fee. Of course you have to phone the airline itself and not the broker (e.g. ebookers). Infact it can be worth using say ebookers to find the flights then look for the same flight direct on the airlines website as most airlines are more flexable on flight booked direct.
