i would like to buy some kind of handheld gps system for when i am in ukraine, so i don't get lost! anyone know of the best system to buy that has decent maps of ukraine available? i would also like to be able to use it when i hire a car.
on that note... i hold a full uk driving license, but what else would i need to be able to hire a car when i am in ukraine?
Re driving license - the info I have indicates your current license and my NZ license are all we need. Thinking about Hiring a motor myself - so any advice or tips on that would be good – in Ukraine that is.
well... i've found out that if you buy any garmin satnav device (or at least a garmin nuvi device?) then you can get a really good detailed map of ukraine from:
http://www.gpsmap.com.ua/en/howtobuy.htm
costs around 100UKP and seems to be updated often. updates are free. only seems compatible with garmin devices.
if you have a windows pocket pc then you can get a map from:
http://www.gpsukraine.com/specifications.html
i'm going for a garmin+map. should cost around 250UKP in total. anyone tried either of these solutions? i'm *finally* off to kiev on the 14th (my girl olya has gone to see an aunt until i finally end up making it there! she has been very patient with me!)
figured i might as well update this old thread of mine... in case anyone else is thinking of getting a gps.
i've been trying the following maps:
* "CartBlanche Ukraine v3.50" - on the whole pretty good, plenty of poi's for kyiv, seems to list more atm's than the others. it's in english which may or may not be a good thing. i'd rather have it in russian.
* "Ukraina_v_4.11_roads" - very similar to cart blanche but in russian, which is much easier when you want to enter the name of a place. more detail for the crimea, which is what i care about at the moment.
* "UkraineV3.66" - created with cgpsmapper.com, so really not sure where the source came from. in russian. good detail but maybe not as good as the other 2. maybe it's just an older version of "Ukrainea_v_4.11_roads"?
* "crimea v-1.60" - much better detail than the rest for the crimea (for some reason, lol) so definately worth having if you're going there.
i'm using a garmin nuvi 250w which is pretty cheap and chearful, but does everything that i want. it's better than my brothers nokia n95, but that of course wins for the uber coolness of being a gps in a phone, lol.
A GPS locator device or better still a bugging/tracking chip secreted in your shoe is good option to have, especially if you get kidnapped or worse. the authorities would be able to locate your body from the tracking signal.
Hi, can anyone help me. I want to take my car from UK to Ukraine. My woman is a Cardiologist and lives in Crimea. So I need a good sat nav for Ukraine and in particular Crimea. It must be in English. The Sat nav in my Ford Mondeo Estate car is a BlaupanktDX system so I would need a CD-ROM tfor the forementioned that would work in this. I am not good with these things at all so I need all the help I can get. someone said you could download one free, but I don't even know what downloading means. I think my current Sat Nav only takes me to the Polish border with Ukraine. Thanks in advance for any help offered. I'm not very good with these things as I'm an older person.
well MR ED some places are a little iffy on the navigation but my iphone seems to work ok. for an older gentleman I would suggest hiring a driver since you will get pulled over by every cop who sees you. cost is as much as they think they can get or 20 USD.
UAH160-200 is the typical "traffic fine" right now. Ive been hit once now and been with a couple others when they got hit. Pay the 200 and move on and be pleasant and realize that its all just part of the system or as we say "Its Ukraine, It is life". They dont appear to discriminate too much but if you are driving out of place like a foreigner...count on it;)
I know the left side of Kiev well myself and have flat in Rusanivka (Русановка) but there are still places Ive not been and its nice to have GPS. My GF knows the right side and every back side street shortcut.
But when alone Its great simply because you dont have to waste time asking especially when they
reply "i dont know"
