Author Post aussieman41 Member send PM   block PM add to buddies Send: 5/4/2008 7:23:18 AM   Is it really true, that in most Ukrainian cities and towns, the locals take no pride in their enviroment and there is rubbish everywhere and in the run down areas the smell of urine and faeces pervades the air? I was once sent a photo of a girl from Krivoy Rog, beautiful river setting with weeping willows and lots of greenery taken in 2006 but all over the ground was litter of cups, bottles and trash everywhere spoiling this natural scenery. I have read that rubbish in the street and parks in Ukraine is a common thing and they just throw shit everywhere and don't care and in some towns the sewerage system is so bad you can smell it in the air and its ripe and disgusting! They threw their rubbish on the street. I was holding on to mine to wait until we got home to put it in the rubbish. They insisted I throw it in the street as well but I wasn't having any of. They just thought i was insane. However I've never smelt sewerage and I think the rubbish in the parks is more a reflection of the lack of funds by the local government to keep them clean. I've been in downtown Sydney after a friday night and I can tell you you'll find lots of discarded bottles and smell urine before the street cleaners move in. Speaking for UK I can just imagine how it would ressemble less well-of countries whereas the economy cannot afford 'çrap picker uppers' with McDonalds cartons and all sorts of crap littering the streets etc. It's bad enough as it is! Though I have seen little old ladies (babushkas) tirelessly sweeping the streets in the early morning with those short little straw brooms. I had quite a different experience from that mentioned by ben2006 above. While in Yalta last August, my lady and I stopped at McDonalds. We walked a while holding our paper cups. When the time came to dispose of them there was no trash receptical to be found, but some people had made a pile of refuse in a little area under a tree. "When in Rome....." I figured (in this case.... when in Yalta) so I took the two cups and placed them on the pile under the tree as well. MY LADY HAD A FIT! SHe told me she couldn't help it if some of her people were pigs and didn't know any better. SHe said she HOPED that I knew better and wouldn't do something that disgusting! We picked up the cups again and carried them till we found a waste receptical. For someone like me who has a chinese bladder ( small bladder ) and I need to piss a lot ( also type 2 diabetes does not help, the medication you take and the disease cause you to piss a lot ), wherever I go I need to have public toilets at hand that are clean and usable. 95% I don't poop in a public toilet because I don't like sitting on seats that have had hundreds of dirty bums on them and God knows what you can catch, just go for frequent leaks which is a nuisance. Also I have read that don't use toilet paper much in the Ukraine and none of the public toilets have it so too bad if you do number 2's, you can't clean your rear end. This is not meant to be a funny post...if you are in dire straights and need to go, I would want to be in a place that has clean and accessible public toilets, apparently the public toilets in Ukraine have no toilet seats and peopel just stand on the rim and squat over it and do there business and walk away quite contented without cleaning themselves for lack of toilet paper. God, thats enough to be put me off going there, yet alone the scammer women. For someone who lives in a modern developed Western country all their lifes with proper and hygienic toilet facilities, to go to a country where they are poor or non-existent is a huge inconvenience and discomfort to say the least. Dirty public toilets with no toilet paper smelling like faeces and urine, never cleaned..YUK!..its enough to make you puke. The cities are developed in Ukraine, their is no excuse not to have hygienic civil facilities and to keep the cities clean of rubbish, they are not that poor, we are not talking about the Tutsi villages of Africa in the back of the desert here where they shit in a hole in the ground. When I was in St Pete, Moscow and Volgagrad, I was surprized how clean the place was. May girl said people there do not throw rubbish on the ground. When wondering around the streets and shopping malls there wasnt a cigarette but or rapping paper anywhere. I dont us public tolets so I wouldnt know there, but those in the hotel were fine. Since you would be going to mcdonalds all time its not going to be a issue for you. As for toilet paper there are often old ladies selling it out the front. Or you pay them to go it and i assume they clean it, I'm not sure how the system works. But yes you have to squat. Its usually the local authorities cleaning up after the night before and there is alot of stuff takeaways pizza boxes beer cans etc! If this wasnt done can you imagine it would be any different than the Ukraine? But I was sad to see such lovely riversides covered in rubbish but every thing takes time and im sure Ukraine one day will improve they people are very smart and hard working. If you grow up in that environment, it may seem more normal. I personally have not seen what has been described( mostly about towns in russia), I see many people cleaning in front of their businesses, public bathrooms are not the cleanest and I try not to use them if possible and then only after drinking. On my bus trip from Chisinau to Odessa, we made a bathroom stop in small town in Moldova, well as you might have guessed, toliets did have stalls....with a hole in middle and a foul odor inside. At least you don't have worry about getting a disease from toliet seat!!! I did wonder what was in girls bathroom??? Aussie...it is so easy to tell you have never been in FSU...most bathrooms you pay to use and buy your TP paper, you sound so ignorant in some of your details on life in FSU...most things you talk of start with " I read'........ I went to meet a woman in Ekaterinburg that I was corresponding with. She turned out to be a stupid, insensitive bitch. But, aside from that, during my stay we took a bus trip 4 hours into the middle of nowhere to visit some ancient village. Along the way, we pulled over into a small parking lot. The bus was filled with mainly middle-aged to elderly women. And there was me, my girl and her friend. The passengers took a few steps into the woods and formed a line. There was a hole in the ground. One by one, each woman stood over the hole, lifted up her dress and took care of business. I watched (No, not upclose!) from a distance with confusion and surprise. Finally, I said, F it, I got in line and took a leak with the rest of them. That was different, but I guess when you're in the middle of nowhere, that's what you do. I guess they don't have fancy chartered bus lines like they do in the U.S. If you're in a public place in the FSU, good luck finding toilet paper. I advise anybody traveling there to bring a roll with you. Azov Stahl constantly belching smoke into the air, plus there is also Illiyacha steel. On the streets there are tons of debis, cigarette butts, and good old fashioned mud, because the pavements are a total disgrace. During the winter there it is impossible when walking about on the streets to avoid getting a boot full of mud. Most of the buildings have inferior restrooms when compared to the west. Even in restaurants, the WC is shameful. I believe this is so, because they do not have the money to update their infrastructure. Many episodes at the beach, if I had to releave myself, I would get within 20 yeards of the WC and smell it from that distance. There was no way I was going to go in their, and risk blindness. So instead I would releave myself around the back of the building. During the summer, their was constant power outages, and I had the occasion to see downed electrical lines on the street. Two days later and these wires still remained, untouched. Also the dwellings are a joke. In all common areas outside, it is just lttered with vodka, beer, and general trash. You would think they would at least take care of their home dwellings. But on the flip side of things, maybe they are better off than we are. I mean in the west we are slaves to our home maintenance,(lawn mowing, painting,etc) over there they don't need to be concerned with such trivial things!!!!!!
