I recently returned from a week in St Petersburg with my Russian fiance, my third trip to Russia.
The weather was very hot all week, although this city is as north as Greenland and the Shetland Isles.
A magnificent place, with amazing and impressive architecture, built to impress and all beautifully preserved. The manner in which the middle of St Petersburg was built creates a feeling of great space and so never appears to be crowded, with the exception of the main street, Nevskiy Prospekt.
If visiting St Petersburg, I would recommend a visit to the following:
Our Savior on the Blood Cathedral, next to Mikhaylovsky gardens is a very beautiful building resembling in some ways St Basils Cathedral in Moscow. The Hermitage within the Winter Palace, on the Palace Square. A small boat ride round the inner city canals on a sunny day is a feast for the eyes. St Isaacs Cathedral, an awesome structure, both inside and out, is now a museum and boasts fourteen different types of marble making up its interior. It is also possible to climb stairs to the Colonade, nearly at the top of St Isaacs Cathedral, which give panoramic views across the city.
St Petersburg is an expensive city to stay in, many things costing much more than the U.K. A large beer was 10 U.S.D. in all the bars we visited around the city centre. Taxi drivers charged a minimum fee of 20 U.S.D. and so it makes good sense to learn how to use the local buses. Tourists are charged two or three times as much for entrance into places like museums and galleries, than are Russian nationals.
And to the girls of St Petersburg: There are some unbelievably beautiful young ladies here, as with everwhere in Russia. My girlfriend finds my fascination with the beauty and style of Russian women amusing. I told her that I could quite happily sit on Nevskiy Prospekt all day long watching them walk by.
This city is considered to be the centre of fashion in Russia, and it shows. What makes the girls here so remarkable is the fact that they all appear to have their own individual fashion style. They dress with a great individuality, and look superb. Even the plain or not so good looking young women are so very interesting due to the manner in which they dress, and walk down the street with such grace and confidence. I have never seen so many beautiful legs on display. Nevskiy Prospekt is like a giant catwalk with model quality women passing by in their hundreds. In contrast however, the guys, and women past their prime, dress much more casual.
I did not see though in my week here, any evidence of these stunners with guys 15 or 20 years older, unlike in Volgograd or Kiev.
And I also commented to my girlfriend that I could not imagine anyone from this beautiful modern city wishing to live anywhere else.
Another place I would recommend seeing in St Pete is Peterhof or the summer palace. You can take a skiff (not sure proper name but a fast boat that seats quite a number of people) across the Baltic sea to it or take a combination of metro and bus. The metro is well developed there and is the best transportation because busses and taxis have problems with traffic jams and move very slowly some times of the day. Dont eat the cheeseburger at the cafe at Peterhov I think it is made out of soybeans.
Yes they charge for everything not only tickets to get in but also an add on fee to use your camera and a higher one to use a video camera. Cost me 20 dollars extra for the privilege of using a video camera in the aquarium there. My friend always bought Russian tickets for me and I limited my talk to polite words I knew well.
Tringa Of course St Petersburg is beautiful city it is not dirt dust bowl like Los Angeles and of course women of St Petersburg have natural beauty with out plaster cement and botox injected into face like American woman
Not to rain on your parade...but face it...deep down, the majority of western guys could care less about Russian architecture, Russian history, Russian traditions, Russian writers, Russian composers, etc.
Guys who travel there are trying to get a woman to commit to a serious relationship and LEAVE RUSSIA for married life in ANOTHER country. If a guy travels to Russia, and comes back with no serious relationship...over and over again...do you think he's going to continue studying that little Russian language book? Is he going to read books by famous Russian authors, listen to traditional Russian music and research Russian city information online? Nope. I've been there four times and have nothing but photos of places that I saw. It's not enjoyable for me to look at photos of the women who turned out to be scammers/bitches/liars. The women there are not going to leave their country.
If guys really want to learn about Russia and its culture...go there for sightseeing ONLY. Take in the sights and learn about things that interest you. You'll appreciate it more and have fun. If you try to mix up tourism with finding a bride, you're going to come up empty-handed.
I wouldn't mind seeing St. Petersburg, but it's not that high on my priority list. There's still plenty of places I want to see in the USA and in other countries. Some guys still continue to play this endless game of chasing Russian women...and there are those that need to "retire" from doing this. The "foreign bride" business has already ran its course.
I will agree with you Manoda that St Pete is not somewhere I would want to live. The gold and mosaic in the palaces, cathedrals, and museums are breathtaking. The white nights are beautiful but home is where your heart is and my heart is not in that large a city. And when you stop and think how many common people sweat blood to build such immaculate structures and make the czars so rich and are still proud of what their sweat did it is amazing.
Thank you for the link. I enjoyed the photos especially the two of that smart little girl that likes Kansas cartoons :-)
Have you ever been in Los Angeles, Lyudmilla???? Or are you just speaking about what you have heard or have seen??? Not too many places that can have sunny days over 300 days of year and 20C in winter.
Only bowls in LA is Hollywood Bowl...no dirt just lush vegetation around there and plenty of live music. It does get hot here in summer 35C-40C but ocean and beaches only 40 minutes away. I am not trying to convince anybody to come, please don't, but population continues to increase, I guess there is a valid reason for that. What frigid area do you live in???
I will agree with you on 2 things, St Pete's is very beautiful and women are gorgeous. I saw nothing wrong with combining my 2 loves...girls and history......we had a lovely time together...all three of us!!!!
Thanks for you post Tringa....can I add the Peter Paul Fortress, my favorite, has tombs of all czars. And I did enjoy the boat rides down the canals. One last thing, I did hire a guide/interpreter on my first visit, it was great, I got all the folklore and history of all historical sites mentioned already. Have you been there in summer? I hear it is very hot/humid?
I was there in July last year for 10 days and the temperature was just about right maybe in the eighties Fahrenheit. Only rained one day which locals said was unusual it did not rain more often. I was at the summer palace and as soon as rain started there appeared girls selling disposable rain coats for a dollar or two.
