This has been mentioned on here but not really discussed. How do the people in Ukraine afford the prices there. When in Dnepropetrovsk We ate a meal out almost every evening in different cafes. I think there was only one we repeated a second time at. The average cost for a dinner for 2 was 60 to seventy dollars US. Sometimes this would include a glass of wine but usually we just drank juice. We were not eating off of the top priced items, I noticed one entry I think it was brisket on a menu that cost over 1200 grn or 240 US dollars. Granted you could find high priced cafes here but for normal dining this is 2 times the price in the United States and perhaps close to 3 times. We went bowling there and three of us did 2 sets each so it was 6 sets total. The cost was 195 grn or 40 dollars us. So if you take shoes off I would guess it was 5 dollars a set. Here it is a little more that half that.
So in the Us if you go off of minimum wage at 40 hours that would generate around 1000 dollars a month for a US citizen compared to 120 dollars minimun in Ukraine but their costs on these Items are much higher than in the US. Who is eating out there and doing these other activities and how are they able to do it.
One menu for tourists and one for locals. The last time I was in Ukraine a meal for two including two beers was around 25$. That was one of the top restaurants in a large provincial town.
I'm assuming this price was for locals as I was with a local girl at the time and she did all the ordering.
It the same everywhere, even in some western european countries.
A lady I met in zap told me that she and her friends save up for a meal out once a month. And these are "professional" people on locally good salaries.
I think its bassically a combination of a) the self-selectivity above, you only see the people that are out not the ones making do at home b) the enourmous wealth differential between cities and rural populations and c) the black market: people are buying alot of stuff cheaper than in the shops and many people dont declare their real income to the tax man especially those that have 2nd/3rd incomes from freelence work.
From what I've seen, many restaurants are nearly full every night, forget the prices for a moment...how does locals afford to eat out so often, it has been on my mind every time I visit, along with the fact every girl is dressed in finest clothes and boots in FSU. The math just doesn't add up there.
As far as menus, I don't see changes in prices from english menu to ukrainian menu because they are both in hryvnyas. Kirk, that is one thing I did check out. I know of other things that there are differences between local and foreigner like taxi's, museums, drinking holes. Best word to know is.... Skolka?
Yes as Beemer said the menus are the same because usually when we went in they would bring Ukrainian menus and then maybe add an English one for me and the prices were the same. One day I did go to what they call a sweetish buffet (you pick what you want and they charge accordingly at the end of the line and for 3 of us it was 125 Hrevnas ($25 or $8.33 each) which would be in line with a chain restaurant all you can eat buffet in the United States.
And on the train I was in a first class cabin (with seats not beds) with two local gentlemen. I had come off of an airplane where it seemed like they were feeding us every time we turned around and was not hungry but each of these guys ordered dinner and it was 130 Hrevnas ($26) each.
Somebody over there is making a lot more money than we hear about.
even those on site are far from wish to run awa from UA.
A smart girl on dating can make few thousands a month wich in combination with our good medical service (even private are still cheap), schooling, fitness, salons costs much less then in West....
who the F will want to leave this place???????
Yea, travel a bit - no prob. But keep in mind that this country is not that poor as you think.
no order, village mentality - oh, yea, but it's a different story.
Australia you pay everything until you die mate you never stop paying for everything make 50.000 bux a year at end of year you back to square 1 ----------who wants that ???
Land of Oz, $240 them are Sydney prices. A few months back I shouted 3 friends to a Friday night fancy dinner at a Spanish restaurant in the Central Biz District of Sydney, and the meal for the four of us cost me around A$240. And that covered all the Paellas, bottles of white wine, desert, and Cognac for all . So Oz, I think them restaurant prices in the Ukraine are a bit over the top.
You're Mike00, there's something funny going on in Australia. There are rules for everything now. There's more tax, fees and charges at every turn. And the Tax office is getting real efficient at collecting all this tax too with all this technology.
But I say what's the point, if Australian Government can't spend this 20 Billion dollar surplus, because it will cause inflation. It's all a joke. It's like Catch22 but in real life. I think there's more freedom in Bulgaria than here in Oz.
Not trying to have a poke at the US chaps – BUT – we here in New Zealand have just hit $2 per litre !!!!!!!!!!
That’s petrol not Vodka !!!!!
That’s equivalent to NZ$7.50 per US gallon or $5.80US per gallon.
News channels have been showing the American people are paying close to $4US and not happy about it. My boat can now burn $100 per hour if I open her up, so trips to town are less and not as often !!!
Yes - well - don't think the E-Tec200 would like that mix to much !!! :-))
Using 1 litre per 1 Nautical mile travelled so economy not to bad. It come down to fuel used over distance travelled.
But $2 per litre really starting to hurt us Kiwis now !!!!!
Dan - your Inboard boat – its in Russia or Aussie ???
Biodiesel are pure esters made of vegetable and/or animal fats. Especially virgin vegetable oil processes quite easy, but basically anything can be processed.
Some 20% Ethanol is required, and as this alcohol falls under the liquor-tax its price can be high. The yield is quite high, and this biodiesel is an exceptional lubricant also (used as two-stroke oil in Indonesia), one of the reasons why France's diesel contains 4% biodiesel - lube for the pump.
The biggest physical property-difference is the solidifying temperature (aka freezing point), quite a bit lower, and therefore airliners cannot use it (yet!).
Vehicles and boats however can, with zero alterations. Caloric value is very similar if not identical, flashpoint ditto ..... which means that Maxi "thinks" wrong ;-)
Where do you get Ethanol Danny? You distill that too? And your fats do come from??
Thunder
I meant "re heated fish & chip fat" It wouldn't be to good on the injector system !!!
I know about Bio fuel - its why our farmers are now getting very rich and all others are paying large increases in food prices especially Dairy products
Danny is it true that fuel companies buy all the ethanol in the market in AU? Than they'll resell it, so controlling the price and the volume, do they actually add a percentage on the fuel?
I asked about the large amount of good houses and extremely good cars been driven and was told that there is two extremes either you have money or you dont,A upper class and poor class but no middle class. Alot of those with the money are invloved with some type of corruption or other.
I find the Ukraine very cheap overall,Lviv was obviously a little more expensive and my wife said not to say any English in the car or they would do a round about trip with us but still cheap by our standards.
My best friend hit it off really well with her bestfriend could be love I think shes 23 hes 28 so its nice shes a trained social worker but works in admin in a furniture chain. We used to all go to our favourite restaraunt just outside Uzghorod with a starter and a nice meal and desert plus 4 bottles of wine it used to cost a reasonable total of 34 Euros! which would be one bottle of wine at home!
How do they survive on their low wages I dont know obviously eating out isnt a option I was in one of her friends houses and saw alot of good new appliances I asked her about this later and she explained it all down to credit but obviously when you get this credit for necessities it brings down your standard of living in the long run. The nice fridge and washing machine means less meat on the table!
Colin
Food in Uzghorod – mmm – yes, they know how to cook there alright.
We stayed 3 nights there at a Mini Hotel on edge of town and the Restaurant food was awesome !!!
My wife is an amazing cook and sets a high standard, and it’s the only place she keeps mentioning that extra impressed her.
I loved that part of Ukraine, noticed (this was back in 2005) the young and single women there, weren’t quite as familiar with internet dating etc as Eastern Ukraine. There appeared to be no shortage of them and they appeared a little more down to earth and not as spoilt as their Kiev counterparts ????
Don’t be taken in by the appearance that most people/families are poor.
Have a look at Real Estate property sites, look at apartment prices, not just in Kiev, every town/city in Ukraine.
True, they haven’t spent on luxury items like Restaurant dinning, but most get away for annual holiday or have Dacha. A lot have cars, but wont use every day like us.
They are extremely clever shoppers and savers. They also do not have high housing costs like we do. Power/water/waste collection and no mortgage all makes a huge difference to how much one needs to lead a comfortable life. Some of those apartments would have more US$$ stashed in them than some of the US Banks volts :-)))
Yes – there is a huge division between the rich and the “rest” but there is a rapidly growing middle class. It appears that this sector are falling into the “western” trap of borrow and pay later (credit – hire purchase)
The feedback we are getting from the M-In-law, looks like I will get a big surprise on how costs have risen since my last visit in 05. Lena has been back every year, and says the prices have risen, but it looks like the food prices like elsewhere are escalating very fast now !!!
That will start to hurt alot !!!!
Thought it might interest a few who still think and talk about the wages been 150 ¡V 200$$ per month.
Saw today in a HUGE Giga market complex in outer Kiev - ¡§Staff Wanted¡¨. Check out girls offered 2550Grv (approx $600US ) per month !!!
Cars everywhere now, and big majority new and 50K + value.
Interesting that I saw a noticeable difference today compared to yesterday. Yesterday we went shopping at a market with hundreds of cloths stalls, selling good quality latest European fashions, this place was huge and the prices to us looked very good (500Grv Armani jeans etc) so it wasn¡¦t cheap but to us, good value for top level stuff. I got sick (and growled at) of looking at so many hot looking women, just unbelievable !!!!!!!!!!!
Today I saw a completely different picture. Went to a big Giga Mall, only been open short time. Heaps of people and quality of cloths like our ¡§Ware-House ¡V probably Wall Mart, but I never been to one of those ??
Women very ordinary, over weight and as I said to Lena ¡V it felt like we were back in NZ !!! So got out of there pronto ƒº))))
So ¡V my analyzing of this very professional survey has come to the conclusion that the pretty ones have much more disposable income than the others.

Like you said..there are the rich and everyone else.

I am confused, 2 different places?.. you end with pretty ones have much more disposable income than the others.....that was my thought before I visited...same as home...probably everywhere!!!!!
Check out girls or Girls to be Checked out, i would pay for the latter!!! :))
